PREPARING FOR YOUR VISIT:  
Complete this section ​before​ you go on your fieldwork trip. If you do not know about the 
organization, please research and include your research findings below. 
 
 
1. What do you know of the location you will be visiting? What services does the 
organization provide?  
I know that at Santa Rosa Memorial there is medical care for sickness, there is the 
emergency room incase of a medical emergency and at the hospital people get surgery.  
 
2. If you are visiting a specific department within the agency, what is that department's 
primary focus?  
 
The specific department that I will be visiting at Memorial Hospital is the operating room, 
in job shadowing a nurse.  
 
3. What is the public health function the organization/agency addresses?  
(Assessment, Policy Development, Assurance) 
The public health function the agency addresses is ensuring hand hygiene safety and 
following the HIPPA regulations in keeping a patient's information confidential.  
 
4. What preconceived ideas (personal bias) do you have about the location you will be 
visiting? 
 
Ideas that I have about the location is that most of the medical workers will be busy 
working within patients and I believe that the nurse will be mostly charting information on 
the patient.  
  
 
 
 
​ URING YOUR VISIT - OBSERVATION:

be taking notes on each of these topics so you will be able to add your observations ​after you

Close Read your Surroundings:  
Observe the physical space and "read" them as if close reading a text. Pay attention to: 
● sensory details 
● signs posted 
● languages you hear 
● colors of the offices and uniforms.  
● does the location have a certain smell? 
● what sounds do you hear?  
Observations at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital that I experienced was being cautious and 
aware of hand washing hygiene and following the HIPAA rules.  
There were lots of hand sanitizers, gloves and mask around the hospital.  
As for me I was in the operating room so its smells like skin and metal tools but it wasn’t a 
terrible smell. There were lots of cutting with the tools and like a saw sounds coming 
from the operatings room.

Some emotional responses that I observed was how emotional people get when their 
family member of spouse or husband worry about the surgery or health conditions they or 
someone else might go through.

- relating to your potential career choices 
- public health related issues and challenges they see as important to consider.

Some specific highlights and observations from the day at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital 
is being able to experience in being in an operating room and observing the steps going 
into surgery from the beginning to the end. A lesson that was small that I took away from 
the experience is that the Nurses and Doctors always make sure to ask the patient their 
date of birth and name.  
 
How did the experience meet, exceed, or fall short of your expectations? Explain and 
include specific details from your fieldwork notes to help support your answer 
The experience did meet my expectation because I was able to experience an 
operation from the beginning to the end of the operation , even though the operation 
wasn't as exciting since it was only a back operation but overall I enjoyed viewing the 
surgeons doing their job.
