Man who predicted 9/11 and the GFC reveals what's next
Richard Hames
predicted 9/11 and the
GFC, and he believes the
evolution of capitalism is
next up.
While Dr Richard Hames doesn't
quite have a crystal ball, he does
have a knack for reading the
future: this is the man who
predicted both 9/11 and the
Global Financial Crisis.
A musician, former paediatric
oncologist and now a futurist,
Hames developed an algorithm
to predict the future, and it all
starts with a single question.
“Security firms look at everything
that's happening in the world and
ask what they can do about it,”
Hames told Yahoo Finance.
“Then, we interrogate that
question using AI.”
And that interrogation looks like
scanning “hundreds
of millions of
documents” and
whittling that down to
around 24 pages of
data.
From that data,
experts weigh in with
their insights and
opinions, and Hames
builds four to five
different “stories”,
each with a different
perspective on the
original question.

same red flag in each of
those stories created.
“When we see that we
s a y, ' O k a y, t h i s i s
something you need to
pay attention to,' because
it requires a response.”
And those red flags led to
Hames predicting 9/11
and the GFC.
“The question that was on
everyone's mind was, 'will
terrorism morph into a domestic
form of terrorism, and if so, what
will that look like?',” Hames said.
“We did a lot of manual work on
this, and it became obvious that
the most terrifying form of
terrorism would be the terrorism
born domestically – people who
the security intelligence
organisations were not even
monitoring.
“And then if that is the case, what
would be the targets that you
would imagine they would have
in their sights, and we chose ten.
“In the US, number one was the
White House, and number two
was the Pentagon. Number three
was the World Trade Centre, and
number four was the John
Hancock building in Chicago
because of its height – funny
enough that's where I have an

But security firms failed to take
action.
“It annoys me, particularly when
people say, 'Well, you couldn't
possibly have foreseen that
happening'. A number of officials
of high level, very prominent
individuals, were saying that,
when they had actually seen the
scenarios we played to them –
they actually knew this was a
possibility.”
So what's in store for our future?
Hames is turning his focus to
capitalism now, and believes
that's the next obstacle society
will have to face.
“The question we are looking at
at the moment is, 'how long can
current forms of capitalism
last?'.”
Hames said capitalism was
morphing away from the
traditional tensions between
“capital and labour” into what he
calls “surveillance capitalism”.
“It's the tension between the
observers and the observed, and
the control of our data and our
identity.”
Hames predicts that, within the
next decade, “all governments
will need to consider how to put a
cap on individual wealth.”

Starting from the 1990s, the term
“MICE” entered the lexicon of
Bali tourism. An acronym for
“meetings, incentives,
conferences, and exhibitions” –
MICE was often cited as the new
“gold field” of Indonesian tourism
as hotels rushed to construct
conference centers and
supplement their sales teams
with MICE specialists.

Tax Refund at Airport Made Easier for Foreign Tourists

Pat chicken halves dry with paper towels and tuck wing
tips up behind the back. Brush spice paste onto chicken
halves, coating both sides, taking care to season under
wings and legs. Place chicken halves in baking dish or
roasting pan with skin sides up, leaving space around
chicken so halves aren't touching.

Roast in preheated oven until a thermometer inserted in a
thigh reads 165 degrees F (74 degrees C), about 1 hour.

The 'faceless' men and women who cost boxing star

The perception of
Gennady Golovkin
today has been
entirely shaped by
six faceless men
and women, the
j u d g e s w h o
presided over his
two defining fights
with Saul 'Canelo'
Alvarez.
This is the fate that cannot be avoided,
even by the premier knockout artist of
his generation, a man for whom the
sound of the final bell was a distant
memory.
The record books say that Golovkin
did not win either of his fights with
Canelo, and so he has been forced to
make do with the widespread notion
that he sits outside of the small
handful of the world's true elites,
where his great rival, plus Vasiliy
Lomachenko, Terence Crawford, et al
lurk. He continues to smile bravely, but
begrudgingly.
That idea burns Golovkin, who
maintains, with some justification, that
he deserved the nod in both the draw
and the defeat to Canelo. On Sunday
he returns, still in pursuit of greatness,
against Sergiy Derevyanchenko for
the vacant IBF title.
The record books say that Golovkin
did not win either of his fights with
Canelo, and so he has been forced to
make do with the widespread notion
that he sits outside of the small
handful of the world's true elites,
where his great rival, plus Vasiliy
Lomachenko, Terence Crawford, et al
lurk. He continues to smile bravely, but
begrudgingly.
Golovkin's entire career built up to his
mega-fights with Canelo, in each of

They were the dream match-ups that
boxing fans demanded to crown a
legitimate No 1 in a town that was not
big enough for the two of them. Even
the promoter of this weekend's
opponent Derevyanchenko, Lou
DiBella, thinks Golovkin was hard-
done-by.
He said: “Anybody who knows
anything about boxing knows that, at
worst, when Canelo and GGG met it
was 1-1. GGG has every reason to
believe it was 2-0.”
The judges' verdict that caused the
most uproar was after the first fight in
2017, delivered by Adalaide Byrd —
her 118-110 scorecard gave 10 out of
12 rounds to Canelo.
“Terrible, terrible,” said Golovkin who
believes that scorecard cost him a
place in history.
Canelo's promoter Oscar De La Hoya
even admitted it was too generous,
s a y i n g : “ T h e 11 8 - 11 0 , I d o n ' t
understand, I really don't.”
Byrd was temporarily stood down as a
judge by the Nevada commission as a
result, which Golovkin must have
seen as an admission of guilt. Canelo
later failed a drug test, which he
blamed on contaminated meat,
forcing a rematch to be postponed.
The bad blood grew but Canelo won
the decision in their second fight.
It took the Kazakhstan banger a
37-fight winning run to finally
earn the major occasion and
rewards that his growing
reputation deserved, only to fall
short according to the ringside
officials. That is their job — only
one of six combined judges
scored either of the Canelo
fights in his favour but debate
continues to rage about the true
winner.

fights, which were
memorable in their own
right. The moment that he
ate a monstrous Canelo
overhand right on the side
of the face but did not
budge an inch became a
viral internet clip.
A trilogy fight and an
opportunity to readdress

seems a million miles away, with
Canelo first set to face Sergey
Kovalev and making clear his
disinterest in renewing his rivalry with
Golovkin.
So what is left in Golovkin?
He is now 37, without a significant
victory in two-and-a-half years, and
has split with Abel Sanchez, the
trainer who led him through the glory
years where he became a formidable
middleweight champion.
The warning signs are there.
Derevyanchenko will have noticed,
too. He has been a quietly dangerous
threat at 160 lbs for some time —
Golovkin was stripped of the IBF belt a
year ago for refusing to fight him, and
instead pursuing Canelo.

Victories in the past two years have
been limited to blowouts of Vanes
Martirosyan and Steve Rolls, but this
weekend's rival will be a far sterner
test.
Golovkin has never been on the floor
in 391 fights, pro and amateur. Boxers
do have a nasty habit of ageing very
quickly inside the ring but Golovkin
should still possess enough of a
thump to dispose of Derevyanchenko
and remind us all why, for so many
years, he was the most feared fighter
alive.

A man walks into the front door of a bar. He is
obviously drunk. he staggers up to the bar,
seats himself on a stool, and with a belch,
asks the bartender for a drink. The bartender
politely informs the man that it appears that he

The 'pretty scary' truth about a common household chore
Every time people around the
world wash their clothes,
millions of tiny plastic
microfibres are shed and
released into waste water
systems.
If they get into waterways, they are
often eaten by fish.
When humans eat those fish, they too
ingest the plastic.
Dr Michelle Blewitt, from the
Australian Microplastic Assessment
Project (AUSMAP), said it was “pretty
scary” people were essentially
consuming their own clothes.
“Any clothes that are synthetic, once
they're washed in the washing
machine, they create thousands of
microfibres every time people do a
load,” she said.
“The fibres are too fine to get captured
by many waste water systems before
they get washed out into the ocean.”
Dr Blewitt said she was unaware of
any washing machine models with
filters that could remove microplastics
before they were cast into waste water
systems.
If the tiny plastic pieces reach the
ocean, they can travel thousands of
kilometres on currents – creating a
global problem.
It's not just humans and fish that are
being affected by microplastics –
larger animals like whales are literally
being clogged by them too.
Dr Blewitt points to a recent study
conducted in the Gulf of Mexico which
found baleen whales are getting
flooded with plastic when they try to
suck shrimp through their bristly
plates.
“It's a huge problem,” she said.
“At this stage there is no washing
machine that will stop those
microfibres from entering our waste
water stream.”
'Burned ourselves' to point of no
return
The issue is particularly pressing in
countries with undeveloped waste
water treatment facilities like the
Philippines.

Collector Museum spoke to Yahoo
News Australia from Bangkok as he
prepared to receive an award from
UNESCO for his work on reducing
plastics in waterways in Davao city,
960km south of Manila.
“I live in a city of 2.5 million people and
they have no waste water treatment,”

he said.
“After you use the restroom, it goes to
your septic tank, and when it
overflows it goes straight into the
regular canal and into the ocean.
“With the washing machines it doesn't
go into the septic tank, it goes straight
into the canal and into the ocean.
“We've pretty much burned ourselves
with the amount of microplastics
we've already created.”
Over the last 10 years, Mr Blatchley
has conducted autopsies on 65
whales and dolphins found dead
along in the Davao coast.
Of the 65 marine mammals, 58 died
due to human-related causes – 48 of
those were killed by plastics.
Mr Blatchley said his sons were being
affected by the plastic-related
carnage they regularly witness.
“They're going, 'It's garbage, isn't it
again, dad?” Mr Blatchley said.
“They're eight and 10 years old, but
they're getting angry.
“They're saying, 'Dad if we've found
this many dead whales and dolphins,
how will there ever be any left in the
ocean for me to see alive when I grow
up?'
“They're saying, 'Will my sons even
see a dead whale at this rate?'
“So if a 10-year-old and eight year old
can understand that, why can't us
adults?”
Mr Blatchley said microplastics were
now so prevalent we had “burned
ourselves” to the point of no return.
He believes marine mammals only
have a future if the majority of people
suddenly change their waste disposal
methods.
“I fear that ship has already sunk,” Mr
Blatchley said.
Aussie plants 'more likely' to remove
microfibres
Unlike many developing countries,
urban Australian waste water systems
filter out most microplastics before
they reach the ocean, with the
majority being trapped in sediment.
Dr Blewitt said she agreed with an
assessment by the peak industry
Water Services Association of
Australia (WSAA) 99.9% of the plastic
fibres were most likely trapped by
urban systems.

What is palm oil?
Palm oil is the most widely
consumed vegetable oil in the
world. It is found in everything from
soap and chocolate to pizza and
cosmetics, and even vehicle gas
tanks — palm oil is used in
biodiesels.
Extracted from the reddish-brown
fruit of the oil palm tree, it helps
make foods easier to spread or
fried products crispier while giving
them a longer shelf life.
Indonesia is the world's top
producer and — along with
number two grower Malaysia —
supplies some 85 percent of the
world's palm oil.

Sounds good, what's the
problem?
Environmentalists say palm
oil drives deforestation, with
vast areas of Southeast
Asian rainforest logged in
recent decades to make
way for plantations. This
threatens the habitat of
orangutans and other
endangered species.
Some palm is grown on swampy
peatlands which become highly
flammable when they are drained
of water to grow crops.
Palm oil development also
contributes to climate change
through deliberate forest-clearing
fires, which release carbon dioxide
into the atmosphere and lung-
clogging smog into the region's air,
critics say.
But the industry denies it's to
blame, saying its plantations are
usually not the source of the
burning and that the flames spread
from nearby areas.
Political battle
Green activists have taken their
beef with the powerful palm oil
sector onto the world stage in a bid
to shame the industry into action
and alert consumers about what
they're eating — enraging
Indonesia and Malaysia.
An increasingly bitter trade battle
is also in full swing between

Union after the bloc decided to cut
its use of palm-based biofuels for
cars by 2030.
The EU earlier imposed duties on
imports of subsidized biodiesel
from Indonesia saying it was
needed to level the playing field for
its producers.

products.
Malaysia this year hit out at
Europe's biofuel phase-out,

is widespread and enforcement

President Joko Widodo last year
issued a moratorium on new forest
clearance for palm plantations, to
reduce the outbreak of fires.
Biodiverse Indonesia's
deforestation rates may have
peaked, but, in the last half
century, rainforests covering an
