The Effectiveness of Preoperative Education on Mental

Readiness
of Cataract Patients Facing Surgery

ABSTRACT

Background: Mental readiness is a personality condition of a person as


whole that means having enough interest and motivation to perform an
activity. Preoperative education can improve knowledge and confidence of
patients to perform the surgery. The purpose of this study is to know is there
an influence of preoperative education on mental readiness of cataract
patients facing surgery.

Method: Type of this study using quasi experimental one group pre test-post
test design and the technique of taking samples is accidentally with a total
respondents is 30 people at Eye Health Care Center SMEC Clinic Manado.

Result: Mental readiness of respondents before getting preoperative


education generally in fairly prepared category (83%), and after getting
preoperative education mostly in ready category (63%). The analysis statistic
result showed that there was an influence of the preoperative education on
mental readiness of cataract patients facing the surgery with p-value=
0.000.

Discussion: The education so important to cataracts patients facing surgecy


in mental readliness. The education can lead or help the patients to decide
which is to do with good attitude. So health education by nurse is very
effective to increase the mental readliness to cataract patients in facing
surgery.

Conclusion: The conclusion of this study is preoperative education can


improve mental readiness of a person to face surgery.
Suggestion, this study can provide information and additional science to
the next researchers about the effectiveness of preoperative education on
mental readiness of cataract patient facing surgery.

1. To provide information of preoperative education on mental readliness of
cataract patients facing surgecy.
2. To motivate all nurses to improve and having a good self-confidience to
educate cataract patients on mental readliness.
3. To minimize errors of nurses action and missunderstanding throngs
communication between nurse and cataract patients.
4. As a proof that preoperative education on mental readliness of cataract
patients facity was needed.

Presenter Biography
Jon W. Tangka was born in Balikpapan East Of Kalimantan on March 12 nd 1964
is a lectore in medical surgecy in Nursing Department Of Manado Health
Polytechnic, Indonesia. The latest education in master of nursing with
medical surgecy at University Of Indonesia. The presenter is Chairman Of
Indonesian National Nurse Assosiation Of North Sulawesi. Also the presenter
was been a head of organizing committee at International Conference by
Manado Health Polytechnic.
