OMICRON PTL ABB REM620 V2.1 Motor PTT User Manual

1. General
This user manual describes details of testing ABB REM620 relays with the OMICRON
Protection Testing Template. General information on the usage of OMICRON Protection Testing Library
items can be found in the OMICRON PTL user manual.

The template has been tested with the following relay:

Manufacturer: ABB
Model: REM620
Firmware Version: 2.1

2. Software and Hardware Requirements

To use this template, the following OMICRON Test Universe version is required:

 Test Universe 3.00 SR1

Furthermore you need a valid license for the following test modules:

 Control Center
 Quick CMC
 Overcurrent
 State Sequencer
 Ramping
 Advanced Differential

Any CMC test set with six current ouputs and four voltage outputs can be used with this
Protection Testing Template.

3. Hardware
There are multiple possibilities of wiring an ABB REM620 relay to a CMC test set. The advised
connections are shown in Figure 1. These connections are the default settings for the tests of the motor
protection functions in the Hardware Configuration MPDIF of the PTT and have to be used to get the
correct test results, even if the relay is connected in another way to the real CTs.

Hardware configuration for earth-fault protection

After the motor protection tests the wiring has to be changed according to Figure 2 for testing the earth-
fault protection functions.

 Three-phase voltage dependent overcurrent protection PHPVOCx

Although the functions listed above are not supported by the Protection Testing Template, the
Relay Parameter Section of the XRIO Converter includes all protection parameters of the relay.

Not supported Parameters/Configurations:

 Motor winding protection MPDIF: CT ratio Cor Line, CT ratio Cor Neut
 Motor thermal overload MPTTR; Env temperature mode: Use input, Negative Seq factor,
Initial thermal Val
 Motor start-up supervision STTPMSU; Operation mode: IIt, CB, IIt & stall and IIt & stall, CB

5. XRIO Converter
The Test Object already contains the ABB REM620 XRIO Converter, which includes setting parameters
of the modelled protection relay. The setting parameters are built as an image of the PCM600 software.

The Standard Filter for XRIO Files can be used for importing settings into the Relay Parameter
Section.

5.1 Specialties of the Additional Information block

Current protection configurations

The Current protection configurations block contains the activation flags for the Start value Mult
parameter of the PHxPTOC, EFxPTOC, DPHxPDOC and DEFxPDEF protection functions. With the
activation of these flags, the start value of the corresponding protection function will be multiplied by the
Start value Mult parameter. Otherwise the parameter Start value Mult is not taken into account for the
overcurrent tests.

6. Specific Protection Tests

In this chapter any existent test specialty of the ABB REM620 PTT that differs from the OMICRON PTL
user manual is described.

6.1 Motor winding protection MPDIF

The parameters “CT ratio Cor Line” and “CT ratio Cor Neut” have to be set to 1,00 to get correct test
results. Other values are not supported within this template.
Furthermore the test will only work correct if the analog inputs 3I and 3IB have the same CT ratios.

6.2 MPTTR Trip Time

The parameter Initial thermal Val is not taken into account for the trip time test of the thermal overload
protection function MPTTR. It has to be set to 0 % before running the test otherwise the trip times would
vary significantly from the operating characteristic that is set in the overcurrent module.
The parameter has to be reset to the original value after the test.

6.3 LOFLPTUC Trip Times

The Overcurrent test module is used for trip time tests of the Loss of load protection function. The low
stage and high stage are tested with 4 test points respectively.

6.4 PREVPTOC Trip Times

The Phase Reversal Protection trip time is tested using the Overcurrent test module. The stage is tested
with two test points.

6.5 Earth Fault Directional Test

The REM620 relay series offers multiple possibilities of setting operating ranges of directional earth fault
elements. Therefore it is difficult to automatically set test points for checking directional borders in all
configurations.

The directional test is performed with the Overcurrent test module using two test shots: one in forward
direction (at the characteristic angle) and one in reverse direction opposite the characteristic angle). If the
directional behavior is correct two different trip times will be measured.

6.6 Voltage protection functions

6.6.1 Pick-up and Drop-off

The pick-up and drop-off values are tested with the OMICRON Ramping test module. A separate module
is available for testing each of the voltage protection functions.
For these tests the necessary voltage (phase or residual) is ramped and two ramp states are generated.
The pick-up value is tested with the first ramp, the drop-off value with the second ramp.

6.6.2 Trip Time of the Voltage protection functions

The OMICRON State Sequencer test module is used for the trip time test of the voltage protection
functions. A separate module is available for testing each of the overvoltage and undervoltage protection
stages. These tests are divided into three sequencer states: pre-fault, fault and post-fault. The pre-fault
and the post-fault states are defined with nominal voltage values. In the fault state, sufficient voltages are
applied to trip the stage under test.
