Working Title:

Analysis of Transportation Barriers en route Bataan General Hospital

Research Area: Transportation Engineering

Subtopic: Transport, Traffic Modelling and Simulation

CHAPTER 1

Background of the Study:

Bataan General Hospital is one of the leading and trusted multi-specialty center in Central

Luzon. It provides better health outcomes, responsive health system and good quality in health

information among Bataenos and its neighboring province. As of now the Bataan General Hospital

has a 100 to 200 bed capacity with a thousand of patients and outpatients. In continuing to grow

the numbers of patients in BGH, it may lead some sort of problems like transportation barriers.

Transportation is a basic but necessary step for ongoing health care and medication access,

particularly for those with chronic diseases. A person with chronic disease requires hospital visits,

medication access, and also emergency situations need an immediate treatment. However, without

a good quality of transportation it may cause interventions in treatment and care, then it may lead

to a lack of appropriate medical treatment and poorer health outcomes.

According to American Heart Association or AHA, in United States, 3.6 million

individuals do not access medical care because they experience transportation barriers, and 4

percent of all children miss a medical appointment because of transportation issues. Transportation

barriers are the third leading cause of medical interventions for seniors across the country, AHA

noted. Common transportation barriers include long travel distances, traffic, lack of vehicle,
transportation cost, inadequate infrastructure, and adverse policies affecting travel, this obstacle

may increase overall poorer health outcomes.

Statement of the Problem:

Balanga City is the capital of Bataan, which may common to be the center of business and other
social activities of Bataenos. In other words, Balanga City is one the most populated placed in
this province. How it may affect the efficiency of roads in the area of BGH, and what
transportation barriers mostly experienced by Bataenos going in BGH.

Objective of the Study:

To provide a compact detail of Transportation Barriers experienced by the patients in routes
going to Bataan General Hospital. And to seek an improving transportation system to produce
an attainable health care service to patients.

Specific Objectives:
1. To analyze the peak time, number of vehicles, and lane capacity of
Routes around Bataan General Hospital.
2. To determine the linkage of transport barriers to demographics and travel characteristics
3. To formulate a new route scheme using barriers as a variable.

Significance of the Study.

To Patients. Provide an information to patients in what routes they can take in emergency
situations.

To Commuters. Improve the transportation system around the Bataan General Hospital.

To Hospital. Prevent patients of not having a good quality of health services.

Conceptual Framework

Conduct a survey from patients

Gathering data from hospital

Analyzing different or alternative routes in

going to BGH

Seek recommendation and suggestion from

patients of BGH and local residences
Scope and Limitation:
• General purpose: To determine the transportation Barriers experienced by
Bataenos
• Topics (aspects) studied: Efficiency of Public Transportations, routes,
profile of patient.
• Respondents:
• Locale of the study: Bataan General Hospital
• Period of the study: 2019
• Roads: Kinatawan Road, Manahan Street, Rotary Avenue
