DBA 8475, Operations and

Supply Chain Management

Course Syllabus

Course Description
Explores the fundamental issues and recent developments in operations management, including manufacturing and service
management, supply chain management, and project and systems management. Learners investigate the role of
operations and supply chain management and the interactions of these business activities with other functional areas within
the firm. In addition, students examine contemporary issues related to total quality management, just-in-time systems,
supply and value chains, reengineering, and other business improvement processes. Case methods and review and
analysis of pertinent scholarly and practitioner research are used to enhance the learning experience and assist students to
develop a framework for understanding, analyzing, and addressing operations and supply chain management issues.

Course Learning Outcomes


Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:
1. Explain and illustrate supply chain management and associated terminology.
2. Describe and explain the steps involved in developing strategy for operations management.
3. Explain the significance of project management to the implementation of operations management.
4. Compare the sequential relationship between process design and process analysis.
5. Explain the significance of bottlenecks to the success of operations management initiatives.
6. Assess the significance of behavioral science principles to the successful implementation of operations
management.
7. Generalize the waiting line approximation model and its application to operations management.
8. Assess the significance of the Six-Sigma approach.
9. Explain how reengineering is applied to operations management.
10. Explain the concept of strategic alignment of supply chains.
11. Explain the concepts and relationships of Just-in-time and Lean Systems.
12. Discriminate between the concepts of collaborative planning, forecasting and replenishment.
13. Explain and discuss the importance of aggregate planning and aggregate sales to operations management.
14. Explain the importance of inventory control to operations management.
15. Summarize how scheduling impacts operations management.

Prerequisite(s)
No prerequisite courses are required for enrollment in this course.

Credits
Upon completion of this course, the students will earn 3 hours of college credit.

The case study for Unit IV is “Cell Phone Design Project.” The case is presented on page 370 of the textbook. Respond to
the questions at the end of the case on page 370.

Unit V Case Study

The case study for Unit V is “Pro Fishing Boats – A Value Stream Mapping Exercise.” The case is presented on page 444 of
the textbook. Respond to the questions at the end of the case on page 444.

Unit VI Case Study

The case study for Unit VI is “Altavox Electronics.” The case is presented on page 526 of the textbook. Respond to the
questions at the end of the case on page 526.

Unit VII PowerPoint Presentation

For Unit VII you are to prepare a PowerPoint presentation of the material in Chapters 14-18. Your presentation should cover
all important points covered in these five chapters. The presentation can be a maximum of two pages per chapter for a total
of ten pages.
Submit your completed PowerPoint to Blackboard for evaluation.

The Case Study for Unit VIII is “Keep Patients Waiting? Not in My Office.” The case is presented on pages 650, 651, and
652 in the textbook. Respond to questions 1, 2, and 3 at the end of the case on page 652.
Your responses should be complete but succinct.

APA Guidelines
The application of the APA writing style shall be practical, functional, and appropriate to each academic level, with the
primary purpose being the documentation (citation) of sources. CSU requires that students use APA style for certain papers
and projects. Students should always carefully read and follow assignment directions and review the associated grading
rubric when available. Students can find The CSU Citation Guide by clicking here. This document includes examples and
sample papers and provides information on how to contact the CSU Writing Center.

Grading Rubrics
This course utilizes analytic grading rubrics as tools for your professor in assigning grades for all learning activities. Each
rubric serves as a guide that communicates the expectations of the learning activity and describes the criteria for each level
of achievement. In addition, a rubric is a reference tool that lists evaluation criteria and can help you organize your efforts to
meet the requirements of that learning activity. It is imperative for you to familiarize yourself with these rubrics because
these are the primary tools your professor uses for assessing learning activities.
Rubric categories include (1) Discussion Board, (2) Assessment (Written Response), and (3) Assignment. However, it is
possible that not all of the listed rubric types will be used in a single course (e.g., some courses may not have
Assessments).
The Discussion Board rubric can be found within Unit I’s Discussion Board submission instructions.
The Assessment (Written Response) rubric can be found embedded in a link within the directions for each Unit
Assessment. However, these rubrics will only be used when written-response questions appear within the Assessment.
Each Assignment type (e.g., article critique, case study, research paper) will have its own rubric. The Assignment rubrics
are built into Blackboard, allowing students to review them prior to beginning the Assignment and again once the
Assignment has been scored. This rubric can be accessed via the Assignment link located within the unit where it is to be
submitted. Students may also access the rubric through the course menu by selecting “Tools” and then “My Grades.”
Again, it is vitally important for you to become familiar with these rubrics because their application to your
Discussion Boards, Assessments, and Assignments is the method by which your instructor assigns all grades.

These are nongraded discussion forums that allow you to communicate with your professor and other students.
Participation in these discussion forums is encouraged but not required. You can access these forums with the buttons in
the Course Menu.
