CHAPTER ACHIEVEMENTS LEARNINGS IN RIZAL’S CHARACTER
5  After finishing the first year of a course in  Rizal was clearly a gifted man in
Philosophy and Letters, he transferred to the brilliance within the field of
medical course. academics
 He completed a vocation course in surveying.
 As a thomasian, he won literary laurels.
 Graduating with highest honors from Ateneo.
 Rizal obtained gold medals in agriculture and
topography
 He graduated in Ateneo as the most brilliant
student

 Had romances with other pretty girls  Sad experiences from his first love
made him “wiser” in ways of
romance.

 He received the first prize in the “Liceo  Saying that Rizal was quite talented
Artistico-Literario” for writing La Juventud in the literary arts is an
Filipina understatement to say in the very
 Rizal once again won in the Artistic-Literary least
Lyceum by writing a literary masterpiece of an
allegory for the passing of Cervantes
 Other literary works like a zarzuela named
Junto al Pasig, A Filipinas, which is a Sonnet,
and the poems Abd-el-Azis y Mahoma and Al
M.R.P. Pablo Ramon

 He was revered to be the Champion of Filipino  He cares and defends his fellow
Students for standing up against the Spanish Filipino students from being
students’ insults and deceits oppressed and discriminated.
 He was skilled in wrestling and founded
Companerismo as a brotherhood of Filipino
students to fight against Spanish Students

6  After finishing 4th year medical course in UST,  Rizal resented the Spaniards’
Rizal decided to study abroad discrimination and prejudice to
Filipino students

 Rizal wrote Amor Patrio, an essay urging a
nationalistic insight to fellow Filipinos. This was
sent back to the Philippines to be published.
Then followed Los Viajes, and Revista de
Madrid.
 After leaving Philippines, Rizal still
has a burning passion for
nationalism and a talent to express
it through his literary excellence

 He enrolled in the Central University of Madrid
taking both Medicine and Philosophy and
Letters. Not to mention studying in the
Academy of Fine arts, along with studying
multiple languages.
 Rizal was still motivated as ever to
take on the challenges of education
and studies
  Rizal joined the Masonic lodge of Acacia in
Madrid. He needed freemasonry to combat
friars and religion as a shield in the Philippines.
 He became a Master Mason and was
transferred to Lodge Solidaridad and was
recognized of this high honor in Paris
 During College, Rizal won in a Greek Language
competition receiving a Gold medal despite not
having breakfast during that day
 Rizal participated in the violent Student protests  Rizal has a soft spot for the victims
addressing the bigotry of Catholic bishops
 Rizal competed his medical degree in Spain,
although was not awarded the doctor’s diploma
due to unpaid fines and the lack of thesis
 He also finished his studies in Philosophy and
Letters.
 Due to this, he was qualified to be a professor in
humanities and a full-fledged physician.
7  Went to Paris and Germany to pursue his
specialization in Ophthalmology.
 Travelled around Europe to continue studying
European life and customs, government and
laws in several places and befriended some of
the top German scientists.
 Worked as an assistant to Dr. Louis de Weckert
a leading French Ophthalmologist.
 He helped his friend, Juan Luna the great
master of brush, by discussing various problems
on art which improved his own painting
technique. He also posed in some characters in
Juan Luna’s paintings.
 He learned how to play the flute and managed
to compose some songs.
 He shared a mutual sentiment of
practicality and criticism of
government policies from the
Spanish Masons
 Come to think of it, Rizal really is
dedicated and brilliant in spite of
any hardships he may fall through
of the oppressed which is why he
acknowledged to participate in the
riots for the sake of justice
 Rizal’s efforts and hard work finally
paid off, for he graduated with
decent grades and had enough
knowledge to bring the fight to the
friars in the Philippines
 Rizal is very enthusiastic when it
comes to learning, he’d do what it
takes to learn.
 He even worked for Doctors, and
attend lectures at his vacant time
so he could learn anything related
to Ophthalmology.
 He’s a very loving child, he chose to
study medicine specialize in
Ophthalmology so that he could cur
his mother’s failing eyesight.
 When it comes to arts, and music,
still, Rizal is very enthusiastic, and
intelligent, he managed to give his
friend Juan Luna some opinions so
that he could improve his painting
technique. And he learn how to
play the flute fairly well and
managed to compose some songs.
 He left Paris and went to Germany.  Also when it comes to socializing,
 He became a member of the chess player’s club Rizal has no problems with it, he
and became famous among the German made many friends with his stay in
students. Europe.
 He worked at the University Eye Hospital and  He is very observant and has many

 He wanted to master the French language so he
practiced and he even took private lessons to
really master the said language.

 He admired the German women more than the  When it comes to women, I can say
Spanish women. He even wrote a letter to his that he is a womanizer, he admired
sister Trinidad on how much he admires too many women within his travel
German women. to the other countries.
 He also admired the German customs,
especially on how the Germans interact with
each other.
8  He came up the idea of writing the Noli Me
Tangere in the book he read about the
brutalities of the American slave-owners.
 He began writing the novel.
 His friend came to Berlin and helped him get
out of hunger and sickness. He lends him
money for his expenses. And even finance the
printing of the novel.
 He finished writing the novel.
 Then while getting ready for printing, police
visited his boarding house and asked for his
passport or he’ll get deported for he is accused
of being a French spy.
 The accusations of the embassy were proved
wrong, so the police released Rizal.
 Then the printing of the novel started.
 He gave copies of his first novel to his friends.
 And he also let his friend Viola, who is the savior
of the novel for he financed the printing of
novel because Rizal became broke in his stay in
Berlin, read the novel first.
 He was praised by his friends for his novel was a
life’s work and so wonderful, as they say, it was
written by the heart.
9  Being a Doctor, 8 years later after his
graduation.
 Became an Ophthalmologist under Dr. Louis de
Wecker.
 Honors in Spanish Literature and Arabic
"Excellent", Hebrew and Greek "Excellent" and
"Good" in Spanish history.
 Learned French in Five months. (And hoped to
speak German by six months)
 Publication of Noli
 Noli reaches the Philippines
 By his wisdom and love for the
country, he came up with writing a
novel about the cruelty of the
Spaniards to the Filipinos during the
Spaniard regime.
 He made it realistic by relating the
characters to his fellow countrymen
and the Spaniards.
 His novel was no doubt, a work of
art.
 Those praises gained were very well
deserved.
 Even though he was a graduate of
medicine, claiming the title of
"Doctor" took him 8 years later with
the sole purpose to become a
doctor only to his countrymen and
to his mother. This shows that he is
not impatient and despite being far
away, he only thinks of the state his
fellow Filipinos under the Spaniards
and studied intently to Help them
and lit their eyes.
 He is considered to be on a
different level because his
colleagues have different
nationalities and are truly
professionals by which he is one of
them.
 shows his thirst for knowledge, only
to be used for his plans.

10  Medical course
 Rizal taught the peasants
 Rizal translated Bluementritt's ethnographical
Study of the same Island in 3 days and added a
brief essay
 He made a self-portrait
 Elected as a member of the Society as well as
the Anthropological Society
 Being a Novelist
 Rizal is gifted with immense
intelligence for he has honors in
foreign language, literature and
history.
 He is quick to be trusted by some
foreigners or should I say friendly.
Impresses them with his talents and
by that respected him for it.
 Shows that he is patient, lucky and
resourceful. His plan of publishing
his book "Noli" was a success and
was sent to different places such as
the Philippines to let them know
about the state what his
countrymen are facing. And even
he was away from home, he still
contributed to help his people even
if it means death awaits him. And
by that I can say he is utterly brave
and patriotic.
 His duty to the Philippines came
first as he waved goodbye to
Europe, a country that he looks up
to. Wishing that it would be like his
country.
 Though he was heed with many
warnings not to come home, he
refused to them and still went
home for "There was nothing to
fear". Clearly, he's courageous and
homesick.
 Rizal is Self-less because he thinks
of his people first, knowing there
are consequences to his actions. He
established a medical clinic and
handled operations. Also opened
up a gymnasium for young people
to let the youth enjoy.
 He's transparent person because he
clearly showed his personality
through a self-portrait.
 As he was Elected as a member, it
shows that he's trustworthy.
 Even he despaired, he gave
assurance to his Family by saying
"Do not be afraid, I am doing all I
can... Patience, a little patience.
Courage!"
