BIG DATA ANALYTICS & DATA SCIENCE TRAINING FOR POWER UTILTIES

24th December, 2018 to 28th December, 2018

Today Power utilities are moving to newer technological platforms to enhance

service experience of the customers as well as manage the utilities operational
efficiency which has been a challenge with mounting financial burden.

Indian Utilities over the last one decade has moved from paper based operation to a paperless environment,
This has been facilitated thru various program from Government of India i.e. SCADA/GIS system adoption in
APDRP, technology adoption in RAPDRP, digital platform adoption thru Smart Grid Pilot with enhanced overall
planning and optimization of utility operation through UDAY. Introduction of GRID management policy has
further improved on the operation of Load dispatch center with more and more reliance of technology for
better monitoring of GRID.

This transformation of utilities has brought them closure to huge pile of data which need to be leveraged for
better operation and planning to support our utilities in their transformation journey to move from debt
ridden to a better managed and self-sustained one.

In the aforesaid context NPTI has carved out new dimension and technology marvel for all utilities. NPTI with
its in depth Research and focus towards harnessing new development for Indian utilities have paved the path
forward for adoption of new technologies like IOT, BIG DATA Analytics, Machine Learning and Artificial
Intelligence coupled with open source platform like Hadoop for data storage and creating efficient Disaster
Recovery. NPTI is creating Centre of Excellence (CoE) on Analytics. This will help utilities to strategize and
achieve large scale success on their Analytical journey, Data Storage, Data Recovery etc.

Globally, billions of dollars are lost every year due to electricity theft, wherein electricity is distributed to
customers but is never paid for. With rapid urbanization the need of power has been demanded to be looked
upon every instance for satisfying consumers at all front be it domestic, commercial or industrial. This is
warranted use of technologies which can give better outcome on various fronts i.e.

 Revenue protection , Non-Technical Loss /Forensic /Power theft analysis

 Load forecasting – short term ( intra-day ,day ahead , week ahead), mid-term, long term
 Balancing of Demand and Supply position on dynamics basis -Optimization of power procurement
portfolio and have better insights on better spot market/medium term /long term market strategy
 Cost efficacy and creation of renewable portfolio for utilties
 Transformer modelling – ageing, failure , load predictions etc
 Suppression of false and multiple SCADA alarms at control center

 Outage monitoring etc.

Today, utilities spend millions of dollars adopting new solution to address BUSINESS ISSUES, like above where
in these long term deployment do not get warranted for their efficacy as one state model does not fit other,
variability of demand and factors necessitate a change in model adoption strategy, impact of variable right
form State, cities, district, town etc bring in modeling parameters which need to be established first, before
can be taken for large scale successful deployment. The entire solution strategy for the above burning and
pressing needs of the utilities lies in the BIG DATA STORAGE STRATEGY and DATA ANALYSIS STRATEGY using
techniques like machine learning (ML) for utilities betterment.

A machine learning model needs much less time to scan spreadsheets than a human; even though its
algorithm does the same thing that humans do. It uses experience, history, and past results and gradually
trains itself to determine suspicious activity.

CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE on Analytics at NPTI provides a TEST BED, support

 to pilot these business issues to a successful business outcomes using Machine learning algorithms
over tradition time series models.
 help create economics towards large scale deployment.
 convert pilot into successful model which will help in creating larger RFP for successful
implementation in a consultative approach.
 with large background Enable as project management consulting layer to bring coordination
between the solution and the state requirement.

FRAME WORK OF NPTI CENTER OF EXCELLENCE ( CoE)

Moreover, as NPTI is a nodal body, the effort and outcome from CoE can be replicated to other utilities which
will safe guard the time , manpower and infrastructure and help transition to newer platform in much more
structured manner. Emphasis of NPTI is to bring in participative action from all the utilities through this one
day workshop, which then will be taken in broader perspective discussing with each utilities in detail.

Big Data 3Vs: Volume, Velocity & Variety

A large amount of structured and unstructured data is being generated every day and considering the
initiatives taken under APDRP & RAPDRP, this amount of data is increasing by day (Volume) and the pace at
which the data growth is happening (Velocity) brings along the opportunity of getting insights from data in
real-time and the different types of data generated by the disparate sources (Variety) requires a mechanism
to store this data at centralized location and process the same to derive actionable insights.

Today’s technologically-driven society, terabytes of data is being generated every day. Businesses have
information about their customers, suppliers, products, subscribers and everyone else they have interaction
with. Traditionally, business intelligence has been helping firms analyse their historical data. However, tables
turned when Data Analytics gave the power to predict events and suggest actions. What to do with that
information, and how to mine it for trends, insights and predictors of future behaviour, has increasingly
become a key driver for a successful business.Due to its potential, the past few years have witnessed a
phenomenal growth in the reach of data analytics. Big Data Analytics is basically looking for two types of
people – those who can channelize large amount of information and those who can translate business
problems to analytical problems, while the ability to communicate remains intrinsic to both roles.

According to a report on Big Data from research firm McKinsey & Company, it is estimated that there will be a
shortfall of approximately 200,000 analysts who have the in-depth skills necessary to interpret Big Data by
2018. Data Analytics professionals are needed across domains like marketing, sales, customer relationship
management, operations and in all sectors research, government organisations, healthcare, services,
manufacturing, airlines, ecommerce, banking and financial services, technology or even sports. As more and
more businesses and government organisations across the world are going to put their faith in data-driven
decisions, a plethora of roles are emerging in this – such as Internet of Things (IoT) architect, marketing
technologist, technology broker and chief data officer apart from the in demand roles like Data Scientists, Data

Engineers, Big Data Analysts, Data Strategist, Data Architect, Data Visualization Analyst, Data Quality Manager
etc.

The domain of analytics is thus going to be immensely lucrative for young professionals with the right skills,
aptitude and attitude. Recent Industry salary reports indicate that there is 32% increase in demand with
people having Analytics qualifications over and above degrees in IT or business administration or even
doctorates (2016) and data scientists earn more than CA’s & engineers. A well-trained business analyst is
going to be a much sought-after professional in the foreseeable future.
