Opportunistic 5G Networks and Clean Core
Mr OTT Player

• 5G is going to be more capital intensive than 4G

• Building ahead without known Use-Cases is an ROI risk

• Lets be opportunistic with 5G build!

Telcos

• Retrofitting a existing 4G network with 5G Capability is akin to

changing tires while the car is running

• Clean core allows 5G design to be without the burden of

Homework Assignment

Build me a 5G Core network which will:

• Handle both 5G and 4G Traffic Simultaneously

• Does Control and User Plane Separation
• Separates Voice and Data Traffic into separate slices
• Provides separate cost curve for voice and data hardware deployment

Summary and Key
Takeaways
Takeaways
1. 5G is here now – Builds starting in 2018 for 2019 commercial
launch
2. 5G Core design is radically different than 4G because of CUPS
and SBA
3. New 5G core needs to be flexible, resilient and yet economical
4. Opportunistic build, Clean Core and Distributed Edge would be
essential to successful 5G launch
