Clean Water

In most countries all over the world, even in a country like Indonesia, water is very valuable. People
get water from wells, reservoirs, and rivers.
Without water, there can be no life. Every living thing must have water to live. We use water in our
home for cleaning, cooking, bathing, and carrying away waste. We also use water to irrigate dry farmlands so
we can grow more food. Our factories also use water to produce electricity.
How does water get to consumers? The water cycle goes through three stages; water evaporates from
the seas, lakes, and rivers, rises and forms clouds; the clouds travel on air currents until their temperature has
dropped to a point where the water in the clouds falls to the ground as rain; the water then gathers in the seas,
rivers, and lakes, or goes down through the soil and becomes ground water.
People settle where water plentiful. They live near lakes and rivers. Factories are also built near lakes
and rivers. People and factories dump their waste into rivers and lakes, polluting them. Thousands of people
died because they drank water polluted by their own waste.
People want drinking water that is free of bacteria, clean, and without bad taste or a dour. Water in its
natural state seldom has these qualities. Water plants take raw water from lakes and river. They purify the water
so that it is safe to consume by people.

Pollution is the accumulation of something where it is not wanted. Pollutants may be unwanted for a
variety of reasons. They might, for example, be diserable if they were somewhere else. Crude oil is valuable
when it is piped into refineries to supply fuel for cars and power plants. But adrift on the ocean, it is pollutant.
DDT has saved many lives by killing mosquitos that carry malaria and other diseases. But in the bodies of fish,
birds and other wildlife, it is a pollutant. Heat is useful when it warms houses or generates electricity ; when it
is discharged in large quantities into cold clear streams or lakes, it causes thermal pollution.
Other pollutants are always undesirable. Radioactive fallout : for example, has no redeeming features
regardless of where it is. Chemical and biological weapons present a dilemma when they must be discarded :
they are dumped. Certain items become undesirable after they have served their purpose. Aluminium cans are
useful containers for beer or soft drinks, but nobody wants them once they are empty.
Other substances become pollutants when they accumulate in large concentrations. A hiker’s sanitary
arrangements consists of a small hole dug in the ground and covered up after he has used it. Decomposers in
the ecosystem break down the waste. But sewage disposal for a city of one or two million people is another
matter, if proper treatment plants are not available, water pollution is the inevitable result.

ASTRONOMY

Astronomy is the science of the universe. It is the oldest of the sciences. It began several thousand
years ago, when people firs wondered about the stars of the night sky. Most of these people were hunters and
shepperds. They could not write, and we do not known much about their not ideas. Yet they surely used the
stars as guides on their wanderings. And it is likely that they learned to foretell the seasons by-what they see in
the sky.
The earliest astronomy record that we have were made on clay tablets in Babylonia about 3.000 years
ago. They were made by high priests or astrologers. Astrologers were men who studied the movements of the
sun, moon, and the planets in the sky. They believe that these movements revealed what was going to happen
on the earth. In those days people thought that the stars and planets are Gods who controlled the lives of human
beings. Even though this idea was wrong, it led to the first careful studies of the heavens.
Some of the clay records were astronomy tablets. They are used to work out the positions of the sun
and moon each month. The tables made it possible for astrologers to predict eclipses. There were times when
the moon passed between the earth and the sun, blocking out the sun’s light : the result as wan eclipse of the
sun. When the sun and the moon were exactly opposite each other in the sky, then the shadow of the earth fell
on the moon ; the result was an eclipse of the moon, in which the moon became dark. People believed that
eclipses were a bad omen. Astrologers were important men because they could predict eclipses.

Do you know the moon ? At night you can see it shining brightly in the sky. The moon is one of the
objects in space. Because people are curious about the things, they study the space and the things in it. The
science that studies these things is called astronomy. Astronomy deals with objects such as the sun, moon and

galaxies. Our galaxy is one of the thousands of millions of galaxies that make up the universe. Astronomy is the
oldest science. A person who is expert in astronomy is called an astronomer.
Ancient people discovered many important uses of astronomy. The positive, of the rising and setting sun

various communities of ancient Greece. It was held every four years. At that time only men participated in the
games. Women could not even watch them in the stadium.
The first competition was held at Olympia in 776 BC. There was only one event, a running race. Later
games had more events such as long jump, javelin, boxing and chariot racing.
Now amateur and professional athletes from all over the world take part in the modern Olympic

Olympic Committee (IOC), an organization founded by Baron de Courbertin in 1894. Not all nations are
represented, but the committee works with the national committees and sports federations of all countries that
take part, establishing rules and arrangements for each new Olympic celebration. The IOC is pledged to oppose
political and religious interference and to maintain the Olympic ideals.
The important thing in the Olympic Games is not winning, but taking part. The important thing in life
is not conquering, but fighting well. This statement by baron de Courbertin is the creed of the modern Olympic
Games. The Olympic motto is Citious – Altious – Fortius. These Latin words mean: Switfer, Higher, Stronger.

OUR HEALTH
A Latin proverb says: ”Mensana in Corpore Sano”. this means that in the healthy body stays the
healthy soul. If our health is good. thus our mind will be good, too. Nobody will think well if he is sick. When
the mind is clumsy, one will feel unhappy. He is unable to control his emotion.
Health is important in our life. Someone’s career or studies will decline when he is often ill. Now the
case is how to stay healthy. Our parents always tell us to live in good order. We must sleep when it is time to
wake up, and we must work when it is time to work. This habitual daily activities pertains to drinking and
having meals. Don’t eat or drink things that are not needed by our body for they will damage the organs of our
body.
It is a truth we do the same activities everyday as routine programs. The body organs want a change.
Sport is the most appropriate answer for it. A kind of exercise which makes every part of the body move is a
good one. While having an exercise our mind is relaxed, our tense emotion is softened. The stress that we suffer
is gone.
Fasting is a way to make our stomach healthy. The stomach and other organs continually work. they
need a rest. They take a rest when a person is fasting. Doctors often use this way as the therapy of an unhealthy
stomach.
Finally, preventing illness is better than curing. Well controlled activities and diet are the ways to
prevent us from being sick. Everything must be put in balance with ages and energy used. Children need
nutrient namely food containing carbohydrate, protein, fat, mineral, vitamins in appropriate proportion. Old
people must avoid too much fat or sugar just to prevent them from high cholesterol which can cause the
narrowing of blood vessels. Hard working people must have nutrient which is rich in vitamins.

With the help of high technology, education goes global. There are not any borders to limit someone studying

interest will respond back. Postage and internet are little bit more private. If we use postage, it must be clear to

the consequence, it is much more expensive. In the internet, there is a program called E-mail, standing for
electric mail. If we mail a letter, it needs days for the letter to finish its journey. Using E-mail, we just write the
material in the computer, and then send to the certain address. At the same time, the receiver will read the

who lived centuries ago. However, the craft could not be build until after World War II.
It is not easy to build a spacecraft. A spacecraft needs a good rocket that is strong enough to send it to
outer space. Such a motor was not developed until 1944.
A spacecraft also needs as many as ten million very sophisticated parts. These parts are needed so that

Wherever and whenever you go you are always surrounded by a sea of gases which is called the air or the
atmosphere. We seldom realize this fact because the gases of the atmosphere are invisible. Nevertheless, these
gases are of importance. Without the atmosphere all living things are unable to live.
The atmosphere consists of the gases oxygen and nitrogen, water vapour and smaller amounts of carbon
dioxide and other gases. The air is polluted when it contains enough harmful impurities which affect the health,
safety, or comfort of living things. Because of this reason our air supply should be closely watched and
managed to assure its good quality.
The air can be polluted naturally. Volcanic eruption spread ash into the air covering a large area. The forest
fire produces thick smoke which pollutes the air. This natural pollution cannot easily be avoided.
People may pollute the air. Such a kind of pollution is produced by industries and vehicles. The condition
is getting worse because society becomes more industrialized. Nowadays people builld more factories, expand
existing factories, and drive more vehicles. Whereas factories and vehicles are responsible for providing
pollutants in the air.
The air is absolutely vital. It is our duty to prevent the air from being polluted. Natural pollution is difficult
to overcome. Thus we are only able to minimize the air pollution caused by man.

Water is very precious to people. They use it in almost activities they do. Primarily, they use water for
domestic purposes such as drinking, preparation of food, bathing, cleaning, and watering plants. Secondarily,
water is used for industrial processes, commercial product, waste disposal, fire-fighting, swimming pools, etc.
Realizing how important water is for drinking and food preparation, clean water which is free from disease-
causing bacteria should always be available. Boiling water is the traditional way to get healthy drinking water.
Clean and healthy water is also necessary for bathing and cleaning; fish and plants need water which is free
from pollution.
As the population of the world increases, people are now facing a serious problem of water pollution,
especially in big cities. The growth of population does not cope with the development of housing facility.
Consequently, too many people live in one area, and environmental cleanliness cannot be controlled very well.
20 – BANK SOAL BAHASA INGGRIS 1 SMU (Wacana)
People’s activities are primarily the cause of this problem. Pollutants are chemical substances that affect the
natural condition of water or its intended use. Organic wastes from homes and industries contaminate the water.
As the result, waterways like rivers, lakes, and even oceans are subjected to pollution. This polluted water is
harmful to living things that consume it. Plants cannot grow well and do not yield good quality fruit. Fish do
not grow and breed properly. This, in turn, will affect the health of people who consume them.
Water pollution is really a problem for all people. They, however, cannot overcome this individually.
They need to cooperate as responsible citizens. They should not throw away domestic wastes everywhere. They
must not pour harmful substances into the rivers. Industries must realize the importance of recycling rubbish.
And above all, they should not let the chemical waste get into the rivers or other public waterways.

For centuries men have wondered what the other planets were like and whether life existed on any of
them. Of all the planets, Mars always aroused the greatest curiosity, because conditions there seemed to be the
best for the support of living things. This interest in Mars was greatly increased by the work of two
astronomers, one Italian and one American.
The Italian was Giovanni Schiaparelli (1835-1910), director of the Brera Observatory in Milan. His
special interest was the solar system. In 1877, like many other astronomers. Schiaparelli turned his attention to
Mars, because it was especially close to the earth that year. Schiaparelli observed straight lines on the planet’s
surface and drew maps showing these lines. Most astronomers, then and later were unable to see the lanes.
Schiaparelli called the lines canali, the Italian wors for ”channels”. But the word was wrongly translated into
English as ”canals”. The straightness of the lines and the use of the word ”canals” caused many people to jump
to the conclusion that Schiaparelli had seen structures made by intelligent beings.
Schiaparelli thought the lines were long ditches of some kind, but he did not insists that they had to be
the work of intelligent creatures. However, many people, including some astronomers, were conviced that the
channals were artificial. One such astronomer was the American Percival Lowell (1855-1916). He drew map of

FOOD
For thousands of years, people have known that nourishing food is necessary for healthy bodies and
keen minds. People who are well-fed live longer, are stronger, and can do better work than those who do not
have enough to eat. We know how good food affects growth and gives the body energy. But not everyone has
the opportunity to eat the proper foods. In some parts of the word, food is scare, and people suffer from the
terrible effects of hunger. Even in areas food is plentiful, there are people who do not have enough food or who
do not eat the foods needed for good health.
Many people eat more than their bodies need, with the result that overweight afflicts of them, is the
most common nutritional defect in the industrialized countries, and help account for the great plagues of the
modern word : high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, circulatory disease, diabetes and cancer.
Fast foods, e.g. the hamburgers and pizzas, perhaps the most popular meals in large cities-are often
condemned as junk food. Many nutritionists hold a different opinion. Such foods, they say, balance substantial
amounts of nearly all essential nutrients. Pizza, for instance, provides protein and fat in its cheese, carbohydrate
in its crust, and vitamin and mineral in its tomato sauce. When eaten in normal quantities, fast foods may
supply more calories than average adult needs. Unfortunately, fast foods are not entirely free on nutritional
drawbacks. Most fast food contain excessive amounts of sodium (principally in salt sugar and fat). But, if the
sugary drinks are limited, and if sodium laced seasoning are shunned, the fast food meet the ultimate goals of a
sound diet : nutritional balance and broad appeal.
At least 25 different chemical elements, from calcium to zinc, are needed to make up the human body.
They all come from ingredients of food. The proper variety and amounts of these ingredients must be available
in the foods we eat.

Whenever you go, whatever you do inside or outside, on top of mountain, deep in a coal mine you are
always surrounded by a sea of gases. This sea is called the air, or the atmosphere. The gases of the atmosphere
cannot be seen, and we are rarely aware of them.
Atmosphere is the greatest importance. Without it, people, animals, and plants could not live. Of almost
equal importance is the quality of the atmosphere whether it is pure or polluted (meaning impure).
The atmosphere is made up mainly of gases, oxygen, and nitrogen, together with water vapour, and smaller
amounts of carbon dioxide and other gases. But all air contains small amounts of impurities. In rural areas, far
removed from factories and heavy traffic, the air may contain pollen from plants, dust from the soil, and even
bacteria. These impurities are usually in such small amounts that they are not important.
