2. Notes on ARCNET
In the case that the ARCNET cables are more than 1.5 m longer than the concrete placement variant
requires, the ARCNET cables must be shortened to the correct dimension on the control console
side using the crimping pliers in the assembly case. Ensure proper assembly of the new plugs that
are enclosed in the consumables package.
• Upon deactivation of a node by removing the supply voltage, the network continues to function for the
other network participants after the reconfiguration.
• If an ARCNET node cannot establish a network link with at least one other ARCNET node, cyclical
reconfigurations permanently occur on this node. The reconfigurations lead to cyclical blinking of the
control LED.
Note: Other card types are in use in addition to the two ARCNET card types described in the
following breakdown.
• The green LED indicates communication between the ARCNET card and the ARCNET line.

2.6.1. Oscillograms
• Depending on the job to be transmitted, packets of individual sine oscillations (5 MHz) are transmitted
over the line, in which the statuses of the individual data bits are encrypted.
• It must be ensured that both half-waves of the sine oscillations are transferred.
• The allowable voltage range U PEAK-PEAK may lie between 15.4 and 25 V according to the ARCNET
definitions.
Warning! The indicated standards are not met in ARCNET strands with modules from BDT.
The cause for this is an actual interference protection circuit on the BDT modules that
is intended to increase electromagnetic compatibility. For data that comes from BDT
modules, the voltage range U PEAK-PEAK often lies only at 7-10 V.
The low ARCNET level has been tolerated by all ARCNET hubs used to date. There are
no known problems to this regard.
In ARCNET strands with modules from BDT and other manufacturers, the different
levels are distinctly visible during oscillographing.
• Spikes on the line (not depicted in the oscilloscope) indicate interference that is coupling into the line.
The cause for this can be incorrectly shielded lines on the frequency converter used on the press
(approx. 18-20kHz).
• The distances of the maximums of the individual oscillations equals 400ns or multiples of 400ns.
Measurement with 93Ω Ω Terminating Resistor and an Additional Ohmic Damping of 50 Ohm
(for Example of Incorrect Terminating Resistance)
Inspection of the ARCNET signal can be carried out with a conventional 20MHz oscilloscope. A T-
piece is inserted at the end of the ARCNET line in the respective strand (that is, not on a free input
of the ARCNET hub) and measured with the oscilloscope on the input that is still open.
The signal response on the oscilloscope can be compared with the oscilloscope images included
above.

PE-Line
• Each ARCNET node is connected with the local PE connection of the control or of the computer case
via a resistor of 11.2 k Ω.
The resistance value between the outside line and the control ground equals 1MΩ Ω. A
resistance value from the outside line to PE of 1MΩ Ω can thus be measured in the case
that the control ground is connected with PE.
• In order to ensure the effectiveness of the resistor, it must be ensured that the respective control
component is connected functionally to the respective PE connection; that is, with short line and with
secure terminal connection.
• The outside line and shield may not be additionally connected with PE potential between the node
points.
Consequently, it must be ensured when installing and connecting the cable that the bare COAX plug
connector does not even accidentally contact the PE line at any point.
• Resistance from the outside line of the COAX plug connector to the PE connection must be
between 11.2kΩΩ and 1kΩ Ω in strands without KT94 from ABB and between 1MΩ Ω and 1kΩΩ in
strands with KT94 from ABB, depending on the number of ARCNET nodes on the respective
strand.
1. Check the set node numbers. Node numbers assigned multiple times frequently cause continual
reconfigurations. In some cases, reconfigurations only occur during transmission of data. The activation
modules for the ink keys are an example of this.
2. Localize the fault location to one strand by disconnecting individual ARCNET strands from the ARCNET
hub until stable network operation is achieved.
Warning! If the defective strand is reconnected to the hub as the only strand after eliminating
the defective strand from the ARCNET hub, it is often the case that no malfunction is
4. If the aforementioned steps are unsuccessful, remove the active hub from the network. In this case, there
should be only 8 participants remaining in the network. The other participants should be ruled out by
separating the ARCNET connection from network operation.
5. To localize the error to one participant, the respective sub-assembly can be bridged with a t-piece.
If necessary, disconnect all plugs from the cable and then properly reconnect.
6. Without disconnecting the ARCNET cable on the hub, it can be inspected whether there is an disallowed
connection of the outside line with the press ground by measuring the resistance between the outside
line of the connection plug and the PE connection. With proper cable installation, the resistance value
equals at least 1 kΩ.
In defective cases, the resistance is between 10 Ω and 0 Ω.
7. In the case of improper cable installation, with small bend radiuses, cable breakage can occur, which
can lead to malfunctions due to the mech. oscillations, especially during movement (printing process,
operating stage 1, creep speed). If the cable is suspected to be the cause of the error, only a systematic
replacement of the individual connection lines will help.
TMA: "Transmitter Message Acknowledged" The sent message was confirmed as "valid" or correctly
received by the recipient.
MYRECON: "My Reconfiguration" This participant has triggered a reconfiguration; that is,
the participant is attempting to trigger a network initialization.
Reason: No other participant recognized in the network or
TOKEN was not issued within a defined time limit.

That means, for example, that no washing program tables or error messages were sent to the
recipient.
If this case occurs while the washing program is running (e.g. because a print unit node is not
operating properly), the washing program is cancelled.

• The relevant send and receive addresses can additionally be adjusted via software in the
aforementioned devices.
• Additional diagnostics LEDs were provided on controls before the model B500.
the cabinets are equipped with 230V-OMRON controls and RS232c/ARCNET couplers from
Deutschmann.
The frequency is variable. A reconfiguration often occurs only every 2-10 min.
• Countermeasures:
2. The shield on the RS232c connection line between the OMRON control and the
RS232c/ARCNET coupler must be connected to PE potential at both ends. On the
RS232c/ARCNET coupler side, it must be ensured that the connection is kept as short as possible.
Note: The modifications have already been made by Contemp where necessary. The problems
have not been seen in the use of 24V controls (as of the start of 2007).
