Advantages and Disadvantages of K-12 Curriculum

A Filipino writer, and a President of Manila Times College, Isagani Cruz

summarized the advantages and disadvantages of the K-12 Curriculum. The first
advantage which is basically the side of government, well-heeled and articulate
leaders from the academe, the business community and the media is enhancing the
quality of basic education in the Philippines is urgent and critical. (Insert explanation
here).

Next one is for the poor quality of basic education which is reflected in the
low achievement scores of Filipino students. One of the reasons is that students do
not get adequate or enough instructional time or time on task. Another advantage
that Cruz declared was that the quality of education is reflected in the inadequate
preparation of high school graduate for the world of work or entrepreneurship or
higher education.

Nowadays, most graduates are too young to enter the labor force. Since most
children start Grade 1 when they are 6 years old, they do not reach the legal
employable age of 18 when they graduate from high school today without taking up
to years of senior high.

On the other hand, there are disadvantages of this new curriculum which are
basically affects the people were not favour of proposing the additional two years of
basic education, and one of them are our parents. Parents have to bomb out more
money for the daily expenses, transportation and food for the education of their
children. Everybody knows that money is not easy to earn but for the education of
their children, they must double their effort for them to burst for more money. (JAYA
IKAW NA BAHALA DINE XD).

Another disadvantage that Cruz stated was that the government does not
have enough money to pay for two more years of free education, since the
government is the one to do the allowance-giving, they have sufficient money to
support the poor one. Bu first of all, they must first solve the lack of classrooms
itself, the furniture for the classroom, and the equipment, qualified teachers and
also for the textbook.

Cruz’ another concern was the years we are taking in high school. He stated
that there is no difference of having another two years in high school if everyone
else can do in 10 years. Stuck up in question ‘why do we have to follow what the
rest of the world is doing?’. We don’t need to follow them on the things they are
signing for just to show them that we can do what they can do.

For the last weakness he added in having the new curriculum, Cru said that
DepEd should fix the current subjects instead of adding new ones. The problem on
having the topic is the content itself and not the length of the basic education. As a
summarize, we need a better education and not for more education.
