Introduction

Koreanovelas or also known as k-drama refers to televised dramas in the korean

language, made in South Korea, mostly in a mini-series format, with distinctive features that set
them apart from television series and soap operas made elsewhere. South Korea started to
broadcast television series in the 1960’s, todays mini-drama format of 12-24 episodes started in
the 1990’s transforming traditional historical series to this format and creating the notion of
“fusion sageuks”. Santiago (2017).

Koreanovelas are known to be famous now not only in the Philippines but all over the
world. Watching koreanovela is one of the past times of teenagers to entertain themselves. It also
became a habit to watch koreanovelas every night. The theme is all about love, sometimes it is
magical that’s why youths are addicted to it. Most patrons of koreanovelas are tuners due to
uniqueness of the story and appealing looks of the artists. Teenagers can relate very much on
koreanovelas.

Nowadays, teenagers are known to imitate what is trending, especially the things they see
in the internet. Their behavior changes too. Koreanovela is one of the reason why teenagers
changes the way they act or dress. Because they keep on watching k-dramas, they want to imitate
what the actor or actress wear, eat and especially the way they behave or act.According to
Merriam Webster Dictionary, behavior is the way a person or animal acts or behaves; the way
something moves, functions, or reacts. We all know that we have different behaviors because it
is based on how we are being treated by the people, what we see, what we touch and etc. We can
adopt our behaviors on what surrounds us. Youth in our days are imitating all of the things they
see and watch in the television or in the internet. As observed, youth changes their behavior
when they are watching koreanovelas.

Conceptual Framework

Koreanovelas are well known now in some countries all over the world. It is much more
trending here in the Asia and one of the countries that televises koreanovelas or K-drama is the
Philippines. It has given a big impact to the people of the Philippines especially to the teenagers.
 In conducting this research, the respondents are the students of Tinajero High School-
Annex. The researchers will use survey questionnaires that will spread inside the campus and
gather information. But first, the researchers will make a letter of intent that will be sign by the
Principal to conduct the research. The process of the study will be: 1. Letter of Intent; 2.
Distribution of Survey Questionnaires; 3. Collection of Survey Questionnaires; 4. Data
Tabulation; 5.Statistical Treatment; 6. Data Analysis; 7. Data Interpretation.

The resulting will be analyzed and interpreted so the expected outputs will be: 1.
Knowing how does koreanovela affects the behavior; 2. Knowing the changes in behavior upon
watching koreanovelas; 3. Knowing how the respondents be described in terms of watching
koreanovela

Statement of the Problem

The study generally aims to determine the koreanovelas influences on the behavior of
Tinajero High School-Annex students especially it sought to answer the following questions: 1.
How does koreanovela affects the behavior? ; 2. What changes in behavior upon watching
koreanovelas? ; 3. How may the respondents be described in terms of watching koreanovela?

Importance of the study

Undertaking this kind of study is very important to the following:

To Students, the results of this study will help them further understand the changes in
their behavior through the day they have started watching and until now. For them to know the
effects of it and fully understand how they’ve been influenced by koreanovelas.

To Teachers, the results of this study may help them know what are the changes
happened to their students due to koreanovelas influences. Hereby creating interventions that
will divert students to patronizing our own local novelas with moral lessons.

To Parents, the results of this study may help them to mitigate the negative effects of
koreanovelas influences on their child by filtering the kind of novelas watch by their children on
home.

To Future Researchers, the results of this study will help in conducting future researches
relevant to the influence of koreanovelas on the behavior of the students.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study was delimited to students who are watching koreanovelas in Grade 10.It is
delimited in determining the koreanovelas influences on the respondents through the use of
survey questionnaires. Since it is a non-experimental study.
Definition of Terms

These following terms will help you understand the meaning of some unfamiliar words.

Behavior is the way a person or animal acts or behaves; the way something moves, functions, or
reacts

Fusion is a combination or mixture of things

Fusion Sageukis the mixture of historical and modern touch dramas

Hallyu Wave or Korean Wave is the term given to the invasion of Korean culture in other
countries

Influence the power to change or affect someone or something without directly forcing them to
happen

Koreanovelas or K-drama refers to televised dramas in the korean language, made in South
Korea

Saguek/ Sageuk dramas are period of dramas with historical background

Related Literature

Foreign Literature

According to General (2017) on the article entitled “Expert Explains Why Korean
Dramas are so Addictive” states that fans can response quick and easy when you ask them why
they are being addicted to Korean dramas. They always say that because of the good-looking
actor and actresses, the way they dress or the fashion, the sound tracks, etc. that makes it
addictive to them.

According to Bacon (2016) on the article entitled “Why Korean Dramas are Popular”
states that watching Koreanovelas can cause obsession to the viewers. It can also cause celebrity
crushes because of the casts and can cause them to have insomnia because of the uncontrollable
drama marathons. Some also craves for ramen and desire to use Korean language or words in
their everyday life.

According to Tang (2014) on the article entitled “Food and Fashion: How K-drama is
Influencing Asia” states that because of the Korea’s latest hit dramas, they can influence people
of Asia on what they will wear, what they will eat and what they will buy.

Local Literature

According to Temblor (2016) on the article entitled “Hallyu Wave: Rise of Korean
Culture in the Philippines” states that because of Korean dramas and K-Pop, Pinoy craves for
Korean foods like the famous kimchi and they also want to imitate the korean fashion. Hallyu
wave is sweeping across the country.

Foreign Study

According to Lee (2015) on the study entitled “Korean Stars on TV Drama and their
Influence to Foreign Fan’s Behavior” reveals that because of the characteristics of the actor and
actresses on the koreanovela they are watching, their attitude in watching koreanovela is being
affected. If they saw the Korean stars are good-looking, definitely they will watch.

According to Fu and Chang (2016) on their study entitled “A Study on the Influence of
Korean Soap Operas on Taiwan Female College Students Concept of Love” reveals that the
female college students are not building any illusions on what they watch in Korean dramas,
instead they see those dramas an amusing entertainment only.

According to Habieb (2017) on the study entitled “The Influence of K-Pop in Indonesia’s
Students Behavior” reveals that because of K-Pop, the students are imitating them. They change
their appearance and on how they communicate to others.

Local Study

According to Alanzalon (2011) on the study entitled “KPopped!: Understanding the

Filipino Teens’ Consumption of Korean Popular Music and Videos” reveals that Filipino teens
are highly exposed to Korean music because of the internet. They can easily surf the internet and
find those popular Korean music and they also consumed those media texts everyday by utilizing
various median in the internet.

According to Agatep and Carvajal II et. al. (2014) on their study entitled “What is K-
Poppening? Behavior and Academic Performance of 3rd and 4th year Students of Lorma Colleges
Special Science High School Students” reveals that K-Pop music can play an important role for
the students because it can give inspiration to them while gives a sense of appreciation of Korean
Culture to the non-fans of it.

Relationship of Present Study with Previous Studies

The relationship on the present study to the previous studies is the changes within a
teenager or a student. As observed, because of koreanovelas teenagers are being influence the
way they wear clothes, the foods they want to eat and especially the way they act and
communicate to others. They want to imitate the Korean stars they watch in the TV and in the
Internet. They most likely want Korean products, foods and clothes rather than our own Filipino
made clothes because of the influence of koreanovelas.Accordingto Bacon, he showed a negative
impact on the viewers of koreanovelas especially teenagers but According to Agatep and et. al.,
they showed a positive impact that it gives inspiration to the viewers. The researchers will now
do a research to see or know what really happens to the behavior of the teenagers in Grade 10 of
Tinajero High School – Annex.
 Chapter 3

Research Methodology

This chapter shows the methods and process that will be employed in collecting and
interpretation of data which includes the research method, sample and sampling procedure,
respondents of the study, research instrument, data collection, and statistical treatment.

Research Methodology

The study will employ Descriptive Research Design to generally ask the respondents to
report on the changes of their behavior that they have noticed since the day they started watching
koreanovela until now. Using this design, we can determine the changes on the behavior of the
respondents.

Sample and Sampling Procedure

On this study, we will first use the Purposive Sampling to determine only those students
who are watching koreanovelas and then we will use the Random Sampling to randomly select
the sample population from the whole population. We will use Purposive Sampling because we
want to know the changes of the behavior of the students that are only watching k-dramas and
then Random Sampling to prevent bias. They will be given Survey Questionnaires to know the
influence of koreanovelas to the behavior of the respondents.

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study are the Grade 10 students of Tinajero High School-Annex
who are watching koreanovelas. We will come up with the sample size using the Raisoft
Software Sample Calculator. The respondents will be given survey questionnaires to provide
more data to know the changes in their behavior.

Research Instrument

The instrument that will be used is a researcher-made questionnaire checklist to

gather the needed data in the research. The questionnaire will build to satisfy the needed
information. The survey questionnaires will be given to the students to see if there are changes in
their behavior. If koreanovela truly affects their behavior. We will use qualitative and
quantitative type of questions in the survey paper.

Data Collection

We will give the Principal a letter to be signed by him and lets us conduct the research.
We will give survey questionnaires during class hours. This will guide us to determine the
changes happening on them in terms of their behavior. After distributing the survey
questionnaires, we will collect them and the data will be tabulated.

Validation of the Instrument

The questionnaires that will be given to the students will be validated by undergoing
validation. We will consult our research teachers on validating our questionnaires. We will try
the questionnaires to the respondents that are not included to our research and then we will look
if they can understand our questions indicated in the survey paper.

Statistical Treatment

The study will employ Standard Deviation to the data that will be gathered by the
researchers in the study. To know the difference and the similarities of the data that will be
gathered.
 Koreanovelas Influence
