CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

Conditional sentence merupakan kalimat pengandaian. Terdapat tiga

tipe, yaitu :

1. Future time (possibly true)

If + subject + simple present tense + , + subjek + will/can/may/must + V1

Contoh :
• If I have money, I will buy a new bicycle.
• Our team can finish this homework if our members work together.

2. Present time (not true)

If + subject + simple past tense + , + subjek + would/could/might + V1

Contoh :
• If I had time, I would visit your house.
Fakta : I do not have time, I will not visit your house.
Karena dalam kenyataannya saya tidak punya waktu dan tidak
mengunjungi rumah kamu.

TIPS :
• Kenyatan dari tipe dua ini kebalikan dari kalimat pengandaiannya.
Jika pengandaian berpola negatif, kenyataan berpola positif. Untuk
tense pada kenyataan menjadi simple present tense dan modal
menjadi will/can/may. Sebenarnya kenyataan pada tipe dua sama
dengan kalimat pengandaian pada tipe satu.
• Dalam kalimat pengandaian, selalu menggunakan were meskipun
subjeknya tunggal.

3. Past time (not true)

If + subject + past perfect + , + subjek + would/could/might + have + Verb3

Contoh :
• If we had not lost our way, we would have arrived sooner.
Fakta : we lost our way, we did not arrive sooner.
Karena dalam kenyataannya kita tersesat, kita datang telat.

TIPS :
• Kenyataan pada tipe tiga ini kebalikan dengan kalimat
pengandaiannya serta past perfect diubah menjadi past simple dan
would/could/might have V3 menjadi past simple.
• Selain itu, kita dapat membuat if clause tanpa if dengan cara
meletakkan auxiliary di depan subjek dan tidak merubah tense.
Contoh :
Were I you, I would visit Bali. (If I were you, I would visit Bali)
• Juga, if ... not dapat diubah menjadi unless.
Contoh :
If I don’t have meeting, I will join that holiday = unless I have meeting, I
will join that holiday

Contoh soal :
1. Mr Effie ... if she had been delayed.

terdapat kata had yang berarti past perfect tense. Maka

menggunakan tipe 3 dengan rumus : If + subjeck + past perfect + , +
subjek + would/could/might + have + V3.

2. A company will not ... if its employes are unhappy.

d. Prospering

3. If you try long enough, you are ... to succeed.

rumus di atas, pola seperti ini memungkinkan terjadi asalkan pararel.

Are di atas pararel waktunya seperti will/can/may/must; present.

4. You ... the job if you were not late to the interview.
a. Would get
b. Would be gotten
c. Would have gotten
d. Would have been gotten

setelah kata if merupakan past simple past tense yang menunjukkan

tipe 2. Rumus tipe 2 yaitu if + subjeck + simple past tense + , + subjek +
would/could/might + V1.

5. If the students ... late to submit the scholarship application to the

board, they will not be listed as candidates.

terdapat kata will yang berarti tipe 1. Setelah if menggunakan simple

present atau is/are apabila diikuti oleh kata benda, kata sifat,
atau keterangan. Karena subjeknya jamak, jawabannya are.
