• January 1, 2020, the FAA Final Rule for ADS-B Out

– Published on May 27, 2010


– This rule mandates performance requirements for ADS-B avionics
that will be required to fly in certain airspace (see next chart)
– ADS-B Out transmits location information received from the Global
Navigation Satellite System out of the aircraft to ADS-B ground
stations and to other aircraft equipped to receive ADS-B
broadcasts
– This rule does not mandate ADS-B In

ASSC Overview
Description: Extend cooperative surface surveillance capability to 8
airports beyond the ASDE-X baseline of 35 airports;
Provide multi-lateral cooperative surveillance, ADS-B,
and compatibility with Runway Status Lights (RWSL) at
San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

Objectives: Improve safety on the airport surface by


providing surface surveillance data to enhance
controller, pilot and vehicle operator situational
awareness

In addition, the data can be distributed by the System


Wide Information Management (SWIM) Terminal Data
Distribution System (STDDS) which allows surface
situational awareness information to be made available
to external consumers in the aviation community to
improve efficiency of airport operations.
