ACTY5401 BUSINESS STATISTICS IN CLASS TEST NO.

3 Semester 2 2011

You have 15 minutes to answer these questions on this piece of paper.

NAME:___________________________________ MARK (out of 10):

1) Suppose the average waiting time at the general practitioners (GP) in West Auckland region is
approximately normally distributed with a mean of 16 minutes and a standard deviation of 5
minutes.
a) Calculate the probability that the waiting time at a GP in the Auckland region is between 16
minutes and 27 minutes. [2 marks]

=16 min, =5 min

z1 = (x1- = (27 – 16)/5 = 2.2 
Probability = 0.4861 

b) Calculate the maximum time in order to be in the shortest 2½ percent waiting at a GP in the
West Auckland region. [2 marks]

= 16 min, = 5 min, x1 = ?, p(x < x1) = 0.025

i.e. look up = 0.5 – 0.025 = 0.475
=> z1 = -1.96  (Normal tables)
x1 = + z1= 16 - (5) (1.96) = 6.2 minutes
-½ for not including units
X1
-1 for using z = +1.96

2) Assume 56 out of 70 GP practices in West Auckland Region provide prescription prepayment

certificates (PPCs) to their patients. [Also assume that there are more than 150 GP practices in
West Auckland Region.]
Calculate the 95% confidence interval for the proportion of GP practices that offer PPCs to their
patients in the entire West Auckland region. Round your answer to 3dp. [3 marks]

1 for z, 1 for correct formula, 1 for solution, - ½ for poor rounding

pˆ  Z  0.8  1.96  (0.706,0.894) with 95% confidence .

3) A sample of 65 GP practices in West Auckland found that the mean waiting time for a GP in
their practices is 12.5 minutes, with a standard deviation of 7 minutes. Calculate the 95%
confidence interval for the mean waiting time for a GP in West Auckland. Round your answer to
2dp. [3 marks]
