MANDALA - ANCIENT HEALING TOOL

How to use a mandala

Every mandala you draw, is also a result of your unconscious processes. When you make a
mandala your are connected to your unconsciousness. The drawing, by itself, activates
some of those processes.

Before drawing all was unseen, but while you draw it, and after you have finished, the
unseen material can be seen. This seeing has an affect on us.

Americans are eager to ask: "How are you?", and the formal answer is: "Thanks. I'm fine".
Take the mandala of today with you, and when a friend of yours ask: "Hi, how are you?",
show your mandala to her/him, because there are a lot of information on "today's how".

Let your Self guide you how often you do it.

Sometimes you can do it:

In the morning.
In the evening.
In the middle of the night.

We wake ourselves up from a nightmare because it is too fearful to continue.

If you want to, you can do a mandala just after you woke up from a nightmare, and you are
still in the mood of the dream. This is how you continue the unconscious process, and how
you can get more information on unconsciousness.
You can do the same with a normal dream, when you wake up. The dream and the mandala
together may give some useful information.

When you have several mandalas, on the floor or on the table, you may see, what is going on
in your process.

Above you see twelve mandalas, drawn by a woman during psychotherapy. (These mandalas
are not in their original size. A bit is cut away to save space.) The woman was single, highly
educated, problems with alcohol and in relationships at work and in private life. Also she
suffered depressive periods.
From these mandalas can be seen how the person do not have emotional flow between her
and other people, also between her and the nature. She can communicate on verbal level,
but not on emotional level there is clear suppression.
In few mandalas she has unconciously drawn how she uses pleasing. Easily it can be seen
in the mandala where is a cat. Many other things and processes can be seen in these twelve
mandalas.

If you compare your own mandalas with some others you are in a trap. Each mandala has its
own value.
For example, if you feel that those latter eight mandalas are "better" because they "look
better", you are in a trap.

You can use a mandala to work with your problem. It can be a fear, an anxiety, addiction,
depression, jealosy, panic disorder, eating disorder, headache, high blood pressure,
impotence or what ever.
Take your paper and colors, and make a circle.
Be aware of you body.
Think about the problem. How long have you suffered. What triggers it? What kind of
emotion are connected with it? Which kind of situations activates you fear, anger,
depression etc.?
Use few minutes for this work.
Then stop your thinking. Be with yourself, be aware of your body and your emotions. Be with
the paper, the circle and the colors. Start, when you feel ready.

You can also work when the problem is active:

a. Just when you feel the anxiety.
b. It is evening and you are afraid of the public speech of tomorrow.
c. You have a strong desire of smoking again.
d. Your husband had phoned, telling that he has a negotiation. Partly you believe in him, but
partly you feel fear, anxiety and jealosy.
e. Normally you have gone out every weekend, but today you have decided to stay at home,
and to confront your feelings of loneliness. You are crying; "nobody cares about me".
f. You have a bulimia, and you are about to swallow all chocholate and candies from your
kitchen.
g. Etc.

If you have borderline or psychotic symptoms, avoid using mandala alone. Use it only with
the guidance of your therapist. It is better to root youself with daily routines. Make your
home as a "mandala", where rooms are cleaned, and dishes are washed.

DREAM WORK
Either you have already some mandalas, and on of them seems to have a certain (unknown)
importance or message for you, or you have made a mandala today. Go to toilet, take care of
your duties, wash your teeth, hug your children and pets (dog, cats, horses, chickens,
snakes etc.), hug your partner, take a pen and a piece of paper - and your mandala. Go to
bed, take your mandala, and lay down.
See your mandala.
Do not stare at it.
Do not analyze it.
Imagine that whole of you body (back, neck, head, feet, hands and chest) and you mind can
see it.
Be with that mandala 1-2 minutes.
Tell silently to youself: "I am going to see a dream abouth this."
Put the mandala away. Do not talk to your partner (if you sleep with someone) anymore.
Switch the light off.
When you wake up, in the middle of night or in the morning, take immidiately notes of your
dream. If you do not you may loose (forget) the whole dream already after 5-15 minutes.
Later - when you want - take your mandala, and your dream notes: "Do I get more
information of myself now? How do I feel my mandala now? Dos it look somehow different,
or not?"

RECOMMENDATION
In Finland, when two persons meet, one says: "Mitä kuuluu?" (How are you?), and the other
one answers: "Kiitos hyvää." (Thanks, fine), or: "Siinähän se." (It's okay!) So, we never tell
the truth when we are asked: "How are you?" We are playing How-are-you-Thanks-fine game.
Make a mandala in the morning. Keep it with you. When someone says to you: "How are

you," show the mandala to her/him. In most cases a mandala can tell a lot of "how you are"
today.
