I. Company History / Situation
Lourdes Ocampo is the daughter of Anselmo Trinidad, the former president of the Manila Stock
Exchange, and Josefa Trinidad. Her husband, Ed Ocampo was a three-time Olympian and a
Philippine basketball coach and player. Lourdes has 8 children and currently 12 grandchildren. It
was tragedy that pushed Lourdes to success. After the passing of her husband in 1992, she did not
want to return to Sapang Palay, which is where they used to do their apostolate, because they
shared too many memories there. Eventually, she realized that she had to face it and go back
because going back may also heal her. Upon her return to Sapang Palay, she saw one of the choir’s
guitarist weaving baskets. Lourdes asked him to make a bag but after a week the guitarist was not
able to produce a design. That was when she decided to try her hand at designing and weaving
bags completely out of paper. It took her 2 to 3 months to make the first bag and many months to
improve the design. With her first design, Lourdes credits her sister and brother-in-law, Mila and
Tony Puyat for really pushing her to turn her brainchild into a successful venture. The hand bags
carry the name “D’yaryo” and each bag is intricately handwoven, handmade and distributed
through the Bags4Life Livelihood Initiative Program, a non-profit organization helping
incarcerated women develop their creative skills, to enable them to get rehabilitated and go back
to the workforce once they leave the facility.

II. Organizational Structure & Leadership

Lourdes Ocampo is the founder and owner of the business and so far, she manages all departments
or groups. She is the head of the whole business and plans most of the procedures, from teaching
to finishing. The number of employees she calls in for work is depending on the quantity of orders
and the time and availability needed to make the bags. It also needed for her to be present during
the finishing procedure to be able to check if the quality of the bags are consistent and ready to be
sold.

III. Performance
The bags made by D’yaryo range from Php 300 to Php 2,900 depending on the design and size of
the bag. So far, the business turns out to be profitable and financially stable because of the
numerous people interested in the bags. During special occasions, however, is when the bag sells
more like an example to this was when the Pope visited. Lourdes garnered almost a thousand
orders of pope bags from different people. Every Christmas, D’yaryo bags also sell a lot do to it
being a brilliant as well as beautiful gift to relatives, friends and even workmates especially now
that they’ve come up with a new way to attract their customers by producing bags that come with
a free matching scarf. As well as it being effective for different companies when it comes to their
own Christmas bundles, which leads them to ordering several bags from her. At 79, D’yaryo bags
is her only job which is able to financially provide for her and her employees needs like food,
clothing, shelter and the likes.

IV. Management Practices

 PLANNING
1. How did you come up with this type of business?
-I always believed that the newspaper could be made into a bag. Always!
Just did not have the time, just did not have the patience during the time my
husband was alive. As soon as he passed, I tried making it and it only took
me 3 months to make a bag. I had some picture in my mind na.
2. What is the Mission and Vision of your business?
- Is to be able to teach. My mission is really to help people earn money to
help augment their lives because it’s an industry or a type of business that
you can make in your home, you don’t need to go anywhere. I see my
business as something people will remember me by and continue on even
when I am gone that at least in some way, I did something good by helping
many people.

 CONTROLLING
1. How do you control the progress of your business?
- Of course, we have to monitor. Firstly, you always have to keep changing
and adjusting to the time, the generation and the trend.
2. Do you have a control system that the business or your employees have to
follow?
- Yes, that’s the most important thing of all. First you don’t teach them
everything. One group let’s say does not know how to weave, the other does
not paint. You don’t teach everything to just one group.
3. Do you follow specific standard in producing your products?
- Yes definitely. You have to have your rules. The life of the bag is with the
rolling of the paper, if you don’t roll well the bags will definitely look bad
so that’s the most important thing you have to teach, how to cut and roll.

 Organizing
1. Are your employees or staff divided into different teams or departments?
- Not all workers know how to make the whole bag. Specialization. One
group specializes in one task another specializes a different a task. They’re
divided based on their skills.
2. Do you think they practice teamwork in doing their jobs?
- They have to do that. If they don’t talk to each other properly nothing will
happen. They have to be in constant communication with each other.
3. Do you practice centralization in managing the business?
- Definitely. Centralized lang is where the bags are finalized and finished.
The finishing is done in one place. You collect and the quality control but
the finishing is the most important thing you have to be there present. This
is my house and this is where the finishing is made.

 Leading
1. Has your business helped you become a good leader?
- Yes of course being the owner of the business and with so many years of
having to teach numerous groups of people, I guess I just developed it and
learned to lead well because of course you need patience in teaching and
also you should think about your employees as well because they will not
listen to you if you don’t care about them.
2. How do you make decisions for your business?
- This is supposed to be fashion diba bags eh. First you have to decide on
what fashion style or trend you will follow and you have to keep changing
depending on the style and the time for example Christmas you have to
decide based on what best fits the people today. You also have to decide
what you will produce based on the demand.
3. Do you think it’s necessary to have faith in your people?
- Oh definitely, my people have been with me for 18 years. If you don’t trust
them, baka lokohin ka lang and you would not stay organized. You have to
trust them with teaching them the procedures with the bags that they would
not steal your idea.

V. Assessments and Recommendations

The information that the researchers gathered brought them to their conclusion that D’yaro is a
mix of a multistream and mainstream type of business. The planning section, specifically the
mission of the business, clearly shows that the business of Ms. Ocampo is a multistream type
because it aims to share knowledge regarding the process of making bags to less fortunate people
for them to have a job which eventually helps them earn to augment and improve their lives. This
business simply aims to help and provide for other people. Moreover, Ms. Ocampo takes good
care of her employees and is concerned with their overall well-being. This may be inferred from
her statement that many of her employees have been with her for more than 18 years. Lastly, she
treats her workers not just as employees but as part of her family and also as friends. On the other
hand, it also encompasses a mainstream approach. Ms. Ocampos’ way of controlling the business
is strict especially when it comes to meeting the standards that she sets for her products. In addition
to the researchers’ conclusion, D’yaro may be classified as a social entrepreneurship since it does
not only run and operate for profit but more on helping the less fortunate and those who need it
most.
The researchers’ arrived at the following recommendations:
1. Train and assign a person in charge or a supervisor. This will help her lessen her workload.
Moreover, assigning a person to overlook each step will make the production more efficient
and effective since they can monitor their work in every step.

2. Look for a protegee to be trained, that may be able to run and continue on the business in
the future. The researchers found out that she still does not have a protegee for her business
and she is in high hopes that someone may bring further the business even after she passes.
Thus, the researchers suggest that she finds someone as early as now to ensure the
continuity of her business.

3. It is also recommended that she expands the marketing strategies for her business for more
people to hear of it, due to it being a brilliant idea to earn extra income as well. Look for
someone who is willing to handle her marketing and advertisement especially through
engaging in social media networks which most people use nowadays.
