Activity 1: Classroom expectations

Time allocated: 1 minute
Pedagogy: Explicit instruction
Lesson Plan Year 6’s
Using ICT safely, ethically and Responsibly

Classroom expectations will be highlighted at the beginning of the lesson to show respect
● Everyone has the right to be heard and respected.
● The conversation stays in the room
● We will use language that won’t offend or upset other people.
● We won’t share our own, or our friends’, personal experiences.
● We won’t judge or make assumptions about anyone
● We listen to each other and respect one another whilst we are talking

Expectations are highlighted at the beginning of the class to ensure students know and understand what's
expected of them, which gives them confidence. Students monitor themselves and take more responsibility for their
behavior and perhaps maybe set classroom goals around personal behavior.

Activity 2: Recap of last week

Time allocated: 3 minutes
Pedagogy: Explicit instruction, student centered and teacher directed

Procedure: Students are to consider the statement on the board and answer the question
Task 1:
Recap of last week
- what did we look at?
- Why do you think we looked at this?
- How did this make you feel?

Activity 3: Manage high game

Time allocated: 10 minutes
Pedagogy: Explicit instruction and teacher directed

Procedure: To understand the nature of addiction and how problems can arise from using screen time to
often, we will put them through an activity to generate awareness.

Task 1: Students will be asked to get a math’s game up on their laptop that they will enjoy playing. Half way
through this I will ask them to stop what they are doing and ask them a group of questions.
 After stopping the game in the middle, they will be assessed a series of questions;
o How did that make you feel?
o Did it upset you?
o If you were at home would this affect you?
o What would you do if a family member needed to use the computer or electronic device that you wanted to
use? Or what could you do?

Activity 4: How to avoid screen time tips

Time allocated: 10 minutes
Pedagogy: Explicit instruction, student centered and teacher directed

Tips for avoiding screen time.

- Provide other options
- such as playing outside, getting a new hobby, or learning a sport
Lesson Plan Year 6’s
Using ICT safely, ethically and Responsibly
- Make active and achievable goals
create smart personal goals that can help you make the best choices. Start with daily goals, weekly and
monthly

Set Screen Time Limits

Create a house rule that limits screen time to two hours every day. More importantly, enforce the rule.
-

Make Screen Time = Active Time

When you do spend time in front of the screen, do something active. Stretch, do yoga and/or lift weights. Or,
challenge the family to see who can do the most push-ups, jumping jacks, or leg lifts during TV commercial breaks.

Make Meal Time = Family Time

Turn off the TV during meals. Better yet, remove the TV from the eating area if you have one there. Family meals
are a good time to talk to each other. Research shows that families who eat together tend to eat more nutritious
meals. Make eating together a priority and schedule family meals at least two to three times a week.

4. Set a screen-free day

If you can’t go all day without screens, then set a time when all devices are put down, such as from 5pm to 7pm

every night. And stick to it, no matter how much they beg.

. Make bedrooms screen-free

Activity 4: Introduce assignment

Time allocated: 30 minutes
Pedagogy: student centered and teacher directed

Procedure - Introduce the assessment piece

Go through the assessment criteria

look at the assessment rubric and achievement standards’ and what students have to do to achieve the grade they
want
- Home screen time agreement – AT HOME screen time agreement – your are to discuss your use of electronic
media for entertainment purposes
- complete the sheet and bring it back to school before or on Tuesday

Activity 5: continuing on activity

Time allocated: 10 minutes
Pedagogy: student centered and teacher directed
Lesson Plan Year 6’s
Using ICT safely, ethically and Responsibly
Procedure: Debate topic
o We have been looking at Screen Time and the positive and negative effects of Peer Pressure in
society.
o Debate Topic
o “Is there a need for a Societal Change in our approach to Screen Time?”
o Prepare your answer and why you think it is so, be prepared to debate your position!

Activity 8 - Exit cards (Ongoing Assessment)

These cards are to help with addressing the questions in the class that students are too afraid to say outload with
fear they might be stereotyped against. As the teacher, I will choose if I address the question to the class next
lesson or I may approach the student when other class mates are not around.

Task 1 Students are given an exit card to fill out which includes the following questions: Please see
(appendix 1) for visual of exit card

1 List three things you learned in class today.

2 What questions have arisen from the lesson and how did this make you feel?
3 What do you think you did well? and what do you think you could do better next time?

Once all students are completed they are asked to place their exit cards in a box at the front of the classroom. I will
then read and assess how students have gone in the class and how much knowledge was gained. This is a helpful
tool to assess if students are on track and will be utilised throughout the entirety of the unit to keep on top of
student progression.

Take home message:

Recognize your strengths and take small steps. Reflect on your successes and failures.

EXIT SLIP: 3,2,1 Name:

3: List three things you learnt in class today.

2: Do you have any questions from today? Or is there an activity you would like to do next lesson?
