Reflection Paper

The video we watched during our class was about the church and the state. In the beginning
they questioned why the church was meddling with the government and why they call out
some of the issues that the government has. They also talked about the different events in the
history of the Philippines wherein the church intervened with the government.

In the past there was a separation between the church and the state which means that the
church cannot make decisions or run a certain country on its own and the state cannot also
dictate a single religion for the whole country. But this does not restrict the church to having an
opinion about certain issues with the government because the leaders of the church are
citizens of this country as well and have a right to express their thoughts. This was evident
when during the time of our former president Marcos, the church spoke about how they did
not like how the president reign was about violence and how the elections was a fraud. They
were not afraid to argue about their thoughts. During the EDSA revolution, Many priests, nuns,
lay people and church groups joined in the certain event where they prayed for the country
which lead to a peaceful protest. A radio station was also created where the church was able to
talk about the good news of the Lord as well as talk about their opinions about issues
happening around us. The church currently is allowed to express how they oppose abortion, RH
bill, drugs and more. I am pleased to know that the church is able to have a voice because not
everything in the government is right and as citizens who care about the country, they too must
have the freedom to fight for the right things .

The video talked about how Vatican II was created. It was made in order to create change for
our modern world. Through this council the church is able to reach others more through efforts
such as charism and encouraging communication with other religions. Because of the Vatican II,
the paschal mystery can now be done in a country’s own language. This is something which I
really am happy about because the church is able to adapt to the generation which we have
today. Our culture can also now be evident through the church because of this.
