Character Analysis

Mario-He is the father of the story , the husband of Gloria. He is known to be bad before but
strive hard to change his life for her daughter and for her wife , but life sometimes is unfair that
force him with no choice to go back the old way of his life.

yet descent life. She is the reason why Mario changed because of her unconditional love to him.

Pablo-The evil man in the story , the protagonist , the old friend of Mario. He wants easy and
dishonest money.

The World is an Apple is a kind of a serious story that tackles many aspects of human
flaws , and what is wrong in the culture. The story shows how wrong decisions becomes greater
burdens to a family. Mario's family happens to be in the lower bracket of society , the word
"APPLE" that symbolizes temptation and dishonest life live by Mario before. The theme of the
story is that it is man's instinct that drives him towards his survival. But no matter what he should
not forget that one's action is weighed right or wrong and thus should be kept toward the proper
action , because in every action there is always a positive nor a negative consequences , that
we might accept or reject. The story sometimes sad but in the end , there's a glimpse of
hopefulness. The importance of affordability of food is highly emphasize in the story, in which
life in simplicity is much better to Gloria than what Mario wants. It uses descriptive form of
language in which it was easier for everybody to understand at the same time. I learned the
overall simplicity of life without having to buy something expensive in order to satisfy ourselves.

Feminist criticism

The Wedding Dance" by Amador Daguio is a powerhouse of raw emotion for such a
short story ,“that there could be a conflict between your personal love and love for one’s people
(tribe) and culture, and in some cases culture prevails.” As the reader is drawn into the story of
love and cultural reality, it jars with our contemporary view of the world. Most readers thought
that the story only depicts the problem between two married couple Awiyao and Lumnay whom
can't bear a child. Without deeply analyzing , and just reading the text literally we cannot point
out what the author really trying to implies. Which was the author wanted us to know that the
story also talks about the culture dominating nature , the human beings were now adjusting to
culture , simply defining those terms nature describes how human normally acts and deals
with the society. The plot of the story does not follow the traditional structure , the conflict is
already revealed in the beginning of the story , nevertheless the technique use by the author
allows suspense to the story. The choice of settings of the story perfectly fits to the characters
which culture and tradition over personal lives is emphasized. Setting in Cordillera highlights
fertility and abundance that makes the events of the story more reliable and effective to the
readers.
Gloc-9 Lyrics
[Ebe Dancel:]

[Gloc 9:]

Queer Criticism

Queer theory explores issues of sexuality , power , and marginalized populations. The

Song entitled Sirena clearly discusses about the eagerness of those LGBTQ to have an equality
in terms of rights. Rights to feel beautiful , and rights to live without judgment , because at the
end we are all still humans who commit mistakes. It’s about affirmation or stand and forgiving ,
Sirena is a story that is real ,it speaks through the point of view of a homosexual and describes
himself as a mermaid . The song narrates the character’s hard rock life and everyday struggle
as part of the third sex in the society. The song narrates the identity crisis phase exhibited
during the childhood, the emotion and physical abuse he receive from taunting his
homosexuality in the latter years of his life. . Gloc 9 displays sensitivity in Sirena making sure he
does not offend gays. Sirena is a truthful, poetic, cutting-edge narrative of a gay man’s journey
that is too familiar to many of us. The song discusses about how homosexuals are like
everybody else, they deserve to be treated the same respect like other people and they are
equally important in our society. Homosexuals have the same heart that beats fast at the sight
of a loved one. Homosexuality is not a dreaded infectious disease. And just like the other
genders, homosexuals have the fundamental right to life and happiness. Truly there is no ugly in
this world its just the matter of our society and the people living to it.
Whiteness as Property

by: Cheryl I. Harris (summary)

“Whiteness as Property” is an article that argues that being “White” in the United States makes accessible the right
to own property and the benefits that come from its ownership. Author Cheryl I. Harris supports her argument by providing
historical evidence in the emergence of this phenomenon, followed by the theories behind it, and then ending with how this
phenomenon is still in practice today. Using a story of a grandmother who is “Black” in blood but “White” in appearance, she
integrates all of the points she makes and provides real-life evidence to support her arguments. The history of property
rights for Whites in America may be seen in the tragic importing of Blacks to America as slaves, and the exploitation of
Native American land. Both portray how property rights come from being White because Whites performed both these
actions against Blacks and Native Americans assuming that as Whites, they had the right to. To theorist James Madison,
however, property not only pertains to slaves and land but also to human rights. During the time of slavery, since Whiteness
determined whether someone was free or slave, i.e. had or did not have basic human rights, whiteness therefore determined
whether or not one had property rights. Other theorists argue that property is constructed by the customs and relationships
among the social classes. These “bottom-up” theorists would therefore argue that because Blacks were considered socially
inferior, the right to property was given to the White Americans. Whatever the case, Harris ends the text by arguing that this
is not a historical argument but one that continues until this day and as portrayed by the story of the grandmother. Blacks,
she argues, because they are Blacks, already places them at a disadvantage economically, socially, and politically, because
of their history as being treated inferiorly. Being White automatically gives access to the treasures of property. Two hundred
years ago, these treasures were human labor and land. Now, they are economic, social, and political superiority.

CRITICAL RACE CRITICISM

Whiteness as property has carried and produced a heavy legacy ,the structure of the
story uses the touch of a contemporary period with also the historical evidences provided.
Wherein it showcase to have an equal rights whether in the different appearance or to be
specific skin color to have an equal treatment in our society. It depicts also the status of a
certain person of how hard to be discriminated in every day living and how hard to make
progression in one self. Aside from that story also shows how law takes a big part of the human
rights , to break the stigma between white Americans and black Americans , to exploit the racial
slavery and the inferiority of those black people felt. Whiteness as a Traditional Form of
Property. - Whiteness fits the broad historical concept of property described by classical
theorists. In James Madison's view, for example, property "embraces everything to which a man
may attach a value and have a right," referring to all of a person's legal rights. Property as
conceived in the founding era included not only external objects and people's relationships to
them, but also all of those human rights, liberties, powers, and immunities that are important for
human well-being, including: freedom of expression, freedom of conscience, freedom from
bodily harm, and free and equal opportunities to use personal faculties. Modern Views of
Property as Defining Social Relations to have an equal privilege.
