MY WORKING DAY

I usually get up at 7 o’clock in the morning. Then I wash my


face and hands, clean my teeth and dress up. .
I have breakfast with my family. For breakfast I usually have
bread-and-butter, porridge, yoghurt [‘jogət], eggs, cheese,
sweets and tea .
I come to school at 8 o’clock. I usually have 5 lessons a day.
At school I study many subjects: Russian, Maths, English, P.E.,
Computing, Music and others [‘ʌ∂əz]. I usually have (don't
have) lunch at school.
The classes [‘kla:sız] are usually over [‘əuvə] at 1 o’clock. I
usually go home after classes.
I have dinner at home at 2 o’clock. For dinner I have soup,
meat and potatoes, green vegetables, salads .
I usually do my homework at home. I do it myself
(my parents help me).
I go for a walk every day. In the evening I usually watch TV,
play computer games .
I go to bed at 10 o’clock.

FOOD

People can’t live without food.


We usually have 3 meals a day: breakfast, dinner and supper.
At half past 7 (730) in the morning it's time to have
breakfast. I don't like porridge, but my Mum does. She thinks it's
good to eat porridge for breakfast. I often have cheese or
sausage with white (brown) bread and a cup of tea for breakfast.
I like tea with milk (lemon. English people call it “Russian tea”).
We have dinner at 2 o'clock. I usually have soup, meat or
fish for dinner.
We usually have supper at 6 o’clock. For supper Mum often
cooks a vegetable salad.
When I'm thirsty, I drink juice or water. When I'm hungry, I
can eat anything: potatoes, spaghetti [spə’getı], an apple or a
banana.
Yesterday I came home late. I was very hungry, and I ate a
lot of salad and soup.
I'm a good eater. Pelmeni\ blini\ borshch is my favourite
dish. Ice-cream is my favourite sweet. It's very tasty.
I eat much fruit and vegetables. They've got a lot of vitamins
[‘vıtəmınz].
There is an English proverb "An apple a day keeps a doctor
away". And I think it is right.

MY BIRTHDAY
My name is Olga. I am 9 (10) years old. I usually have a
party on my birthday. My friends and relatives usually come to
my birthday party. My parents, friends and relatives give me
presents. I like to get presents. I like to get toys and books as
birthday presents.
Last year I was 8 (9) years old. I had a birthday party. My
friends and relatives came to my party. They gave me different
presents: books, toys, sweets and many other [‘ʌ∂ə] things.
At 4 o'clock we sat at the table. There were a lot of tasty
things on it: sweets, fruit, ice-cream, juice, vegetable salad and a
big cake with 9 (10) candles in it.
Then we played different games, sang songs, listened to the
music and watched cartoons. I liked my birthday party very
much. We had a really good time.

CHRISTMAS
English people celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December.
It's a happy holiday for all people.
Some weeks before Christmas English people are busy. They
send Christmas cards to their relatives and friends.
People buy a Christmas tree and decorate it with toys, coloured
balls and little lights. They put their presents under the tree.
When children go to bed, they put their stockings near their
beds. At night Father Christmas comes. He puts the presents into
the children's stockings.
For Christmas dinner people eat turkey, potatoes, green
vegetables and pudding. At 5 o' clock it's time for tea and Christmas
cake.
The day after Christmas is Boxing Day. People usually visit
their relatives and friends.
Russian people celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January.

NEW YEAR
Not all English people celebrate New Year. Those who do,
celebrate it on the 31st of December. English people decorate New
Year trees, buy presents and cards for their friends and relatives.
A lot of people go to Trafalgar Square to see the New Year
tree. They have a New Year party at home. On that day they wish
their dearest and nearest a "Happy New Year". When Big Ben
strikes 12 they drink a toast [təust] to the New Year.
In America people celebrate New Year, too. They visit their
relatives and friends or have parties at home.
English and American people often make New Year's
resolutions. Children promise to study well, to help about the house,
not to eat many sweets.
I always keep (don't keep) promises.
Last year we had a New Year party at home. There were many
salads, fruit, drinks, tea and cakes on the table. I celebrated New
Year with my family. I got many presents: computer games, toys,
books . We had a good time.

I have got a pet. It’s a parrot. His (her) name is Chatterbox.


He’s green, blue and yellow. My parrot is big (little), nice and
very funny.

I teach my parrot to talk. Now Chatterbox can say: “Hi!” and
“Let’s play!”. I like to play with my parrot. He (she) can play
hide-and-seek.
I give my pet fruit and vegetables to eat and water to drink. I
take my pet for a walk. My parents and I look after my pet.
I love my pet and my pet loves me too.

AT THE ZOO
I like to go to the zoo. I went to the zoo last summer together
with my parents. I saw a lot of animals there: tigers and baby-
tigers, elephants and baby-elephants, monkeys, foxes, bears and
others.
I think, that monkeys are funny to watch (because they make
funny faces), bears are strong, tigers are clever and beautiful and
elephants are good swimmers.
When I was at the zoo, the zookeeper let me feed the
animals. I gave them fruit, vegetables and sugar to eat.
I had a good time at the zoo. I would like to go there again.
But when I go to the zoo, I always feel sorry for animals,
because they live in cages, they don’t have enough food to eat
and they are very tired.

SHOPPING. CLOTHING.
I like to go shopping. I usually go shopping with my mother.
We went shopping yesterday. A shop-assistant helped us to
choose a jacket and shoes for me. We bought a blue jacket, a
pair of nice black shoes and a new hat.
I usually look at the size, the quality [‘kwolətı] and the
colour of clothes, and I always try things on before I buy them.

At home I usually wear jeans or shorts, T-shirts, socks .


But when I go to school I wear a school uniform [‘ju:nıfo:m].
And when I go to a party I wear a nice dress (suit).
When it's cold I usually wear a warm sweater, a warm cap,
jeans, high-boots and gloves. And when it's warm I wear jeans,
shirts, trousers, dresses, skirts .
I don't like to wear ties, because they are not comfortable.

and autumn.

The days become shorter and the nights become longer in autumn.
The grass is yellow and the leaves fall down from the trees. Autumn is
usually a nice season in England. It is warm and dry. But it can rain a lot
too. In Russia it is often cold in autumn and it often rains.
On the 31st of October in Great Britain there is a nice holiday
for children – Halloween.

This is the coldest season of the year. The days are the shortest and

It is cold and frosty in Russia, it is much warmer in Great Britain.
Children like this season because they can ski, skate and play snowballs.
People wear fur coats, warm caps and sweaters, high-boots and
gloves.
People celebrate Christmas and New Year in winter. In Great Britain
people celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December. In Russia people
celebrate this holiday on the 7th of January. People celebrate New Year
on the 31st of December.

SPRING
There are 4 seasons in a year. They are: winter, spring, summer
and autumn.
There are 12 months in a year. They are: January, February,
March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October,

The spring months in Russia are March, April and May. The spring
months in Great Britain are March and April.
The spring in Russia is warm, sunny and nice. The days become
longer and the nights become shorter.
The sun is shining. The snow is melting (тает). We can see green
leaves on the trees and green grass on the ground. Birds come back from
warm countries. The nature awakens (природа просыпается) from the
winter sleep. Children like to go for a walk and play games outdoors.
People wear coats, raincoats, boots, shoes and caps in spring.
People celebrate some holidays in spring. They are: Women's Day,
Easter Day (Пасха), April Fool's Day, May Day, Victory Day and
others. Women's Day is celebrated on the 8th of March. Easter is at the
end of March and in the first half of April. April Fool's Day is on the
first of April. Victory Day is celebrated on the 9th of May.

SUMMER
There are 4 seasons in a year. They are: winter, spring, summer

The days are long and the nights are short. The weather in Russia is
usually hot in summer. The weather in Great Britain is usually warm, but
not always. It is often changeable. The fields and forests are full of
flowers, berries and mushrooms.
There are a lot of people on the beaches, in the parks. Children can
go to the parks, to the stadiums, to the swimming pools. They can play
tennis, football, volleyball, basketball or hide-and-seek outdoors.
In summer English people celebrate May Day and Father’s Day.

THE ENGLISH YEAR

In Britain (as well as in Russia) there are 4 seasons in a year.


They are: winter, spring, summer and autumn. And there are 12
months in a year. They are: January, February, March, April,
May, June, July, August, September, October, November and
December.
But in Britain the seasons consist of different months and
there is something in each season.
The winter months in Russia are: December, January and
February. The winter months in Great Britain are: November,
December, January and February. In winter people celebrate
New Year. There is an interesting New Year tradition: in
Scotland you can go “first footing”. People think that the First
Foot brings luck to the family.
The spring months in Russia are March, April and May. The
spring months in Great Britain are March and April. In fact,
spring begins at the end of March in England. The 17 th of March
is a national holiday in Ireland – St. Patrick’s Day. On that day
people wear a shamrock, because it is the national emblem of
the country.
The summer months in Russia are: June, July and August.
The summer months in Great Britain are: May, June, July and
August. So, there are 4 summer months – it is good, because all
people like summer.
The autumn months in Russia are: September, October and
November. The autumn months in Great Britain are: September
and October. Summer holidays are over in autumn, and it is time
to go back to school. In Great Britain school begins in the
second week of September.

THE EARTH

We live on the Earth. It is very, very big. There is a lot of


water on the Earth. There are a lot of rivers, lakes, seas and
oceans. There are a lot of forests and fields, hills and mountains
on it.
The Earth is beautiful. It is full of wonders. Different
animals live on the Earth. Different plants grow on it.
There are large countries and small countries. There are
warm countries and cold countries.
When it is day in one country it is night in another country.
When the sun shines, it is day. When the sun doesn't shine, it’s
night. You can see the moon and the stars in the sky at night.
People live in different countries. They speak different
languages.
I live in Russia. My country is one of the largest countries in
the world. I love my country, because I live here.

PRIMARY SCHOOLS IN ENGLAND


In Great Britain school begins at the age of 5. Many boys
and girls usually leave school at the age of sixteen. In England
the school year begins on the first Tuesday of September.
English children have classes [‘kla:sız] 5 days a week.
Classes begin at 9 and they are over [‘əuvə] at 4.
Schools in England have names, not numbers (Green Hill
School, St. Mary School).
At the age of 5 children go to infant schools, where they
spend 2 years, till they are 7. They play games, sing songs,
dance and spend much time outdoors.
When children are 7, they go to junior schools, where they
spend 4 years till they are 11. So in England children spend 6
years in primary school.
Junior schools are real schools. Pupils sit in rows and follow
a regular timetable. Their subjects are: English, Maths, History,
Geography, Art, Music and even [‘ı:vn] Religion [rı’lıdǯn].
Children spend much time outdoors. They visit museums
[mju:’zı:əmz] and different interesting places.
