We have put together the most important steps for a successful PDF-to-Book order
here. Please read these few simple steps in the Quick Info chapter carefully before
starting your project.
To ensure that your PDF template delivers optimum results, we need a standardised
PDF, ideally a PDF/X-4 which needs to fulfil the following criteria.
CAUTION: Once you have submitted your order, the book will be produced based on
your PDF. There is no “proof copy”.
• Upload a PDF/X-4 based on the Bubu profile set (download+install profile set) OR
• Upload a PDF/X-1A with output intent ISO coated V2 300.
• Do not set any crop marks or other print marks (set a 3 mm bleed on document,
but do not set any marks)
• Embed fonts
• Image resolution (minimum 200 dpi) 220 dpi: good resolution. Recommendation
300 dpi.
• Architectural plans must be exported as jpg from the CAD program and placed as
an image. Vectorized plans in PDF format cannot be printed correctly.
• Create pages as individual pages, starting with the first page right (except Flatbook:
first page on the left)
• Format: final format + 3 mm crop (use 3 mm bleed box)
• Page count: from 16 pages, stitch binding available from 12 pages
Cover
• Hard and softcover: as double page with additional spine and bleed.
• Download a “sample file” as a design aid from the configurator (cropped PDF).
• Booklets and wire-bound brochures: cover pages as double-pages or two single
pages with 3 mm bleed.
IMPORTANT: Now copy the content (of the files) from the folders and distribute these
on the paths specified. PDF/X-4 for ‚PDF-to-book‘ designed based on PDFX-ready

Preparing Images
Creation of a PDF
If the document is structured as described above, there are two options: Export a
PDF/X- 1A or a PDF/X-4
PDF/X-1A: All RGB images are converted to CMYK, correct colour profile (ISO coated
V2 300) absolutely necessary
We offer a specially developed printing process for black and white images which
automatically converts the images into what are known as Duplex images. The black
colour is refined with an additional grey, which intensifies the depth of the image and
eliminates annoying colour casts.
Please convert your images for the Duplex method using one of the following methods
in Photoshop:
• For an RGB image, select -> Image / Adjustments / Hue/Saturation / set saturation
to -100
Result: More depth/details, as a 3-channel image is calculated
• For an RGB image, select Image / Mode / Grayscale
Result: Less depth/details, as a 1-channel image is calculated
• For a CMYK image, select Image / Mode / Grayscale
If you want a saturated black, we recommend converting the black and white images
into CMYK. Your black is composed in 4 colours, making it more saturated and strong-
er.
Black and white images based on colour systems (RGB or CMYK) tend to have a col-
our cast. This can be counteracted by reducing saturation. The images (RGB only) are
converted using our unique Duplex method.
If you would prefer a more open, grey black, we recommend converting the images to
1-colour black and white in Photoshop. 1-colour black has a more greyish look when
printed and is less saturated than a black and white image in CMYK.
Perception of colours on black and white pictures printed in 4 colours changes de-
pending on the light source. So we recommend viewing the images in daylight or
standard light. But you can achieve the best result with our special Duplex method
d. BLACK AREAS
If you wish to use black areas in your project, please note that they should ideally be in
4 colours.
For a saturated, dark black, create a new colour with the following properties: 100%
Black, 70% Cyan, 70% Magenta, 70% Yellow
If you select a normal one-colour black here, you should note that the black will not be
saturated but rather more of a greyish colour after printing.
For the preparation and design of your projects, we recommend using Adobe layout
programs. On the one hand, you have more extensive design options with these pro-
grams, on the other hand, you can use profiles to create quality printable PDFs for
professional use.
1. Start InDesign
2. Create a new Document / Target medium printing
3. Select the end format you wish for your project, using the 3 mm bleed box ment-
ioned above
4. Design your project in InDesign
5. During the design process, make sure you position objects correctly with 3 mm
bleed
6. When designing, make sure that you have linked all your images to your document
in the right colour spaces
7. Generate the PDF file via File / Export
8. When asked to select the format, select Adobe PDF (printing) and confirm by
pressing save
9. In Adobe PDF template, select the export profile you have already installed: bubu
PDF2Book X4 ab CS4_CMYK+RGB (content) or bubu PDF2Book X4-abCS4_
CMYK+RGB (cover)
10. All marks must be deactivated in the ‘Marks and cuts’ option.

Cover
For optimum PDF preparation, we recommend using Adobe layout programs. However,
should you decide to design your project in Word, please note that you cannot gener-
ate PDF/X-4 without Adobe Acrobat Professional. The PDFs you generate in Word are
converted to PDF/X-4 as part of our internal workflow. The bleed cannot be explicitly
defined in Word. So it is recommended that wrapped images are avoided, as these
could result in the appearance of white edges. For a design with wrapped images, a
3 mm bleed must be added to the document by adjusting the document size (e.g. A4
format: 210 x 297 mm, set up with document size 216 x 303 mm).
The cover should be made to the exact size specified by the spine calculator (sample
file). We recommend producing the cover using the online Cover Designer.
Mac OSX
Microsoft Windows
• File / Save as
• File type / PDF
• Important: Select “Optimise for standard” and under Options / PDF options, select
“ISO 19005-1-compatible (PDF / A)” so that the fonts are embedded.
For optimum PDF preparation, we recommend using Adobe layout programs. However,
should you decide to design your project in Pages, please note that you cannot gener-
ate PDF/X-4 without Adobe Acrobat Professional. The PDFs you generate in Pages are
converted to PDF/X-4 as part of our internal workflow.
Important: the content must have +3 mm bleed around the whole format.
The cover can be made to the exact size specified by the spine calculator. Alternative-
ly, the cover can also be produced using the Cover Designer.
You can check your PDF files using Adobe Acrobat Professional (display embedded
fonts, CID fonts, colour spaces for images and objects used). Open the file you have
exported in Acrobat and select: “Edit / Preflight / Imported profiles / Analyze And
Fix”.
Preflight profile (for Adobe Acrobat Pro, the file must be imported from the folder
based on the Acrobat version). Instructions: Open Adobe Acrobat / Edit Preflight / In
new window: Options Import Preflight profile / Select Preflight profile from download
folder and confirm with OK -> Download the profile set.
(If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Professional, you can check the individual colour
channels under the Print Preview menu option). After exporting to PDF, check auto-
paging against your template.)
CAUTION: Once you have submitted your order, the book will be produced based on
your PDF. There is no “proof copy”.
a. STANDARD FORMATS
There are a total of 13 different formats depending on the binding type selected (Hard
cover: 12, soft cover: 9, Wire-O binding: 10, stitch binding: 6) You can see the exact
combination options under product configuration in the configurator.
b. PAPER TYPES
Get your ideas down on the right paper. An overview of paper types can be ordered as
sample set. The paper selection depends on the configuration of the remainder of the
product.
Coated papers
Magno Satin: matte, clean, smooth surface, warm white
Heaven 42: matte, clean, smooth surface, bright white
Profibulk: matte, slightly rough surface, yellowish Magno Star: gloss, clean, smooth
surface, warm white
Natural papers
X-Per: rough surface, white
Munken Polar Smooth: clean, smooth surface, bright white
Specialist paper
E-Photo Lustre: surface similar to photo paper, glossy, warm white
Glue binding: For glue binding, the book block is roughened and glued with paste.
This binding has considerable advantages over thread binding for books with different
papers, large page numbers or big print runs and for budget brochures.
Thread binding: Thread binding is the best quality, longest-lasting binding type. The
folded sheets of paper of a book are put together; each is opened in the middle and
’threaded‘ to the other layers in the whole volume along the fold. The binding thread is
visible if you open the book in the middle of a section. You can choose between white
and black thread.
Flatbook binding: In a Flatbook, the sheets of paper are glued to one another across
the whole surface to form the pages of the book. This produces a book block that
can open completely flat and consistent double pages with no break: It is a traditional
method for the production of books, but has been reinvented by Bubu to meet modern
requirements.
Stitch binding: For stitch binding, folded sheets are inserted inside one another, bound
on the fold and cut smooth on three sides. Stitch binding is the simplest and most
cost-effective type of binding, known informally as a leaflet. Wire-bound brochures
are used for printed materials of all kinds to a maximum thickness of 5 mm.
Wire-O binding: Wire-O binding, also known as wire binding, involves drawing a wire
through holes perforated in the stack of pages and then sealing it. Wire-o bindings
can be opened around 360 degrees.
This means all data is handled and output based on ISO guidelines. Certificates: UGRA,
PDFX-ready.
Monitor colours: Every monitor produces a different visual colour experience. The RGB
values set, the light density, the surface gloss, colorimetric accuracy and the actual
colour space (gamma) of the monitor all play a decisive role.
You can only rely on the on-screen template using professional calibrated monitors (in
accordance with ISO 12646) combined with the relevant simulation profiles. Normal
desktop monitors will always show colours differently to the printed product.
Colour spaces: Digital images are primarily produced using scanners and digital cam-
eras. This raw data is mostly available in the RGB colour space and is optimised for
digital display on the screen. However, print production needs the data in the CMYK
colour space which is used for reproduction on the relevant selected material.
In the PDF, do not use special colours such as Pantone, HKS, etc. Otherwise, the Pan-
tone colours are converted into CMYK and we cannot guarantee the quality of the print-
ed colours..
Colour profiles: Based on the latest PDFX-ready guidelines, images in PDFs can also
be transmitted in RGB mode. If you transmit a PDF with RGB images, we will automa-
tically convert it to CMYK (ISO coated V2 300%) colour space based on PDFX-ready
guidelines.
This profile is used for coated and uncoated papers. The benefit is that the ISO coated
V2 profile can cover a greater colour space on uncoated papers than the ISO uncoated
profile.
We recommend editing and saving images in RGB, quoting the source profile.
This requires Adobe Photoshop and our profile set. Before processing in Photoshop,
we recommend synchronising the colour setting across your whole Adobe palette
using Adobe Bridge. Open Bridge and select the imported profile (Bubu-PDF2Book
based on PDFX-ready ISOcoatedV2_300_ab_CS4) under Edit / Creative Suite colour
settings. This option allows you to activate the colour settings across all programs,
including profiles in PS, ID and IL.
If you cannot see the profile, activate “Display extended list with colour settings”.
Once you have finished processing the image, you can convert the image to the rele-
vant colour space via Edit / Convert to Profile. For coloured images, we recommend
CMYK (ISO coated V2 300%).
If the target colour space and the correct profile (ISO coated V2 300%) are activated
in the new window, select Conversion options / Priority / Relative Colorimetric. This
relative colorimetric conversion is a recommendation and must be assessed based on
the image subject.
Pressing ‘OK’ converts the image and saves it to one of the conventional image for-
b. IMAGE RESOLUTION
The images guide the reader through the book and are an important element of the
design. Make sure your images have a minimum resolution of 200 dpi. We do not edit
the completed PDF (sharpness, brightness, etc.).

You can create your cover online using the Cover Designer. It enables intuitive, free
design and requires no prior knowledge of professional layout programs. Please note
that no system fonts are available.
For publications produced with word processing systems such as Microsoft Word or
Pages OSX, the Cover Designer is an ideal additional tool (for example, for disserta-
tions, concepts, presentations and instructions).
The Cover Designer is accessed via the configurator. First, select the Product type /
Format / Binding type and upload the contents PDF, then you are taken to the
“Cover” step. Select “Design cover” to produce the cover in the Cover Designer. The
application opens in a new window in which you can design your cover. When you
have finished the design, you are taken back to the configurator where you can com-
plete the order process.
Create the cover in your layout program and upload it to the Configurator as a PDF.
Please make sure that the PDF is structured appropriately for your product (hard cover,
First, the spine must be calculated using the spine calculator. This is built into the con-
figurator and calculates the correct cover format for you based on number of pages,
paper and type of binding. The measurements can also be viewed without uploading a
file. The calculation generates a sample PDF file which you can use. Click on “Down-
load sample file” and open it in your layout program (100% size). Produce a document
the size of the downloaded PDF and use the PDF as a background. Delete all templates
from the PDF before saving in order to avoid orange edges.
The printed cover is drawn over a cardboard cover. The hardcover is designed as a
double-page with an additional spine, a hinge (fold / joint) and an insert of 17 mm,
which need to be added to the calculations for the final format.

The cover is made up of a front and back cover and designed as a double page or two
single pages for the front and back with 3 mm bleed. The width of the spiral binding
depends on the format and the number of pages. For the design, we recommend bas-
ing calculations on around 6 mm per page.

ing.
