CONCRETE CONE FAILURE CHECK WHERE 3 EDGE DISTANCES < CCR,N TO CLAUSE
6.2.5.7

Characteristic resistance of bolt or bolt group to concrete cone failure,

x Ψs,N x Ψec,N x Ψre,N
0 0
NRk,c = N Rk,c x (Ac,N / A c,N)

Assuming an idealised (actual installed) embedment depth,

hefi = 1000mm
Critical cone width, scr,N = 3×hefi = 3000.000mm
Critical edge distance, ccr,N = (3×hefi)/2 = 1500.000mm

Actual edge distances based on the pad configuration on plan are as below and it can be seen that the actual edge
distances in at least 3 directions are less than the critical dimension of ccr,N.

Due to the edge distance of the pad being less than ccr,N in 3 or more directions, the calculations of the effective
embedment depth (hef) for use in determining the values of NoRk,c, Aoc,N and Ac,N will need to be considered taking the
reduced value of h’ef.

In order to determine the reduced embedment we will need to determine the following values:
Minimum distance from the centre of an anchor to the edge of the concrete,
cmin = 915mm ≤ ccr,N
Minimum centre to centre spacing of the anchors, smin = 170mm ≤ scr,N

For single bolts the value of h’ef can be determined using the equation, h’ef = (cmin/ccr,N) × hefi
Where cmax is the maximum distance from the centre of a fastener to the edge of the concrete member ≤ ccr,N

However, for bolt groups the following equations have to be considered,

h’ef1 = (cmin/ccr,N) × hefi =610.000mm
h’ef2 = (smin/scr,N) × hefi = 56.667mm
The reduced effective embedment depth will be the larger of h’ef1 and h’ef2.

0
So, reduced embedment depth for the calculation of N Rk,c,

h’ef = MAX(h’ef1, h’ef2) = 610.000mmscr,N and ccr,N for calculation of Aoc,N

and Ac,N are determined as follows:

s’cr,N = scr,N × (h’ef/hefi) = 1830.000mm

c’cr,N = ccr,N × (h’ef/hefi) = 915.000mm

From clause 6.2.5.1, characteristic resistance of a single fastener to concrete cone failure in non-cracked concrete,
= kucr x √fck x hef
0 1.5
N Rk,c

Where:
Factor taking into account influence of load transfer mechanisms in non-cracked concrete,
kucr = 7.5×1.4=10.500
Effective embedment depth (actual), h’ef = 610.000mm
2
Characteristic cube strength of concrete, fck = 40N/mm

Therefore characteristic resistance of fastener, or fastener group to concrete cone failure,

NoRk,c = 1000.5kN (calculate by hand due to units)

Aoc,N = scr,N × scr,N = 9000000.000mm

2
The idealised concrete cone area,

For our anchors, the actual area of the concrete cone, Ac,N taking into account the size of the pad.

2
Ac,N = 2000mm×2000mm = 4000000.000mm

Effect of the disturbance of the distribution of stresses in the concrete due to edges (cl 6.2.5.3)
Ψs,N = 0.7 + 0.3x (c / c’cr,N)

Where smallest edge distance from an anchor, c = cmin = 915.000mm

Therefore, Ψs,N = 0.7 + (0.3× (c / c’cr,N)) = 1.000

As the tension load acts central to the fasteners, there will be no eccentricity of tensile load on the fasteners so,
Effect of eccentricity of load factor, Ψec,N = 1

As the effective embedment depth is greater than 100mm,

Effect of shell spalling factor, Ψre,N =1

So characteristic resistance of bolt group to cone failure,

NRk,c = NoRk × (Ac,N / Aoc,N) × Ψs,N × Ψec,N × Ψre,N = 846.222kN

Therefore, design resistance of the bolt group, NRd,c = NRk,c / 1.5 = 564.148kN
