Biogas Plant Introduction:-

The raw material used for production of biogas is organic waste like cow dung, human waste,
leaves etc. The biogas system can reduce the Greenhouse gases as it is alternative for fossil
fuel. Biogas is renewable source of energy that produces energy without emitting any harmful
emissions. Biogas use keeps the earth clean and pollution-free. Biogas has application in
remote areas where there is electricity source. In short, biogas is natural, renewable and
efficient source of energy so its study is very important. The stocks of fossil fuel and natural
gas are limited and they will vanish in upcoming days. So there is need of finding some sort of
renewable sources of energy that will be both beneficial and efficient. And Biogas is one of
them. This motivated me to select this special topic and study details of it. The discovery of
biogas can be first traced back to the 17th century when Van Helmot noticed flickering lights
beneath the surface of swamps and connected it to a flammable gas produced by decaying
organic matter. In the scientific world, Volta noted as early as 1776 that biogas production is a
function of the amount of decaying plant material and that the biogas is flammable under
certain conditions (Marchaim, 1992).The chemical composition of methane was established
by Henry and Davy Dalton in 1810 via methane from coal mines. This was soon linked to the
biogas involved in Volta’s scientific discussion. By 1884, a student of Pasteur in France,
Gayon, had anaerobically produced biogas by suspending cattle manure in a water solution at
35 Celsius. At that time he was able to obtain 100 litres of biogas per meter cubed of manure
(Marchaim, 1992)

Components of Biogas Plant:-

 Mixing Tank: Present above the ground level.

 Inlet tank: This is tank where mixing tank opens .It is present underground.
 Digester: Inlet chamber opens from below into the digester. Digester is huge
tank with dome like ceiling. The ceiling is provided with outlet for biogas outlet.
 Outlet tank: The digester opens from below into the outlet tank.
 Overflow tank: The outlet chamber opens from top into the overflow tank.
Short Description for Biogas Plant:-

Biogas is produced when microorganisms digest organic matter (biomass) in the absence of
oxygen. Biogas is a useful source of renewable energy that is generally piped, stored and
combusted to produce heat (for steam) or electricity. For large installations, it can be cleaned
(scrubbed) and then used as fuel for transport or heating. Digested waste from the biogas
production process has a high nutrient content. It can be used as fertiliser - as long as it is free
of pathogens or toxins - or it can be composted. In Australia, numerous landfills and waste
water treatment plants are equipped for biogas capture and the process is slowly making its
way into the meat and livestock industry. As a renewable energy resource, biogas is gaining
more attention under Australia's new carbon economy. To help reduce greenhouse gas
emissions, the Australian Government is offering a number of financial incentives to support
new biogas projects.

Advantages of Biogas:-

 First thing it is environment-friendly.

 It is produced using animal and agricultural waste which is very easily available
in rural areas.
 It is free source of energy, once plant has been built.
 It not only gives biogas but also provide nutrient rich slurry which is used as
fertiliser in farm.
 Use of biogas would reduce use of firewood, which ultimately would save trees.
 It is also used in production of electricity in remote areas where conventional
supply is not available.

Disadvantages of Biogas:-
• Few Technological Advancements. An unfortunate disadvantage of biogas today is that the systems
used in the production of biogas are not efficient.
• Contains Impurities. After refinement and compression, biogas still contains impurities.
• Effect of Temperature on Biogas Production.
• Less Suitable For Dense Metropolitan Areas
Department of Computer Engineering
Biogas in Industry:-

The plant is equipped with a Bright Bio methane biogas upgrading system. The bioenergy plant
is called ‘Bio-energycentral Harderwijk’ and produces annually approximately 12.5 million Nm³
biogas annually from 65,000 tonnes of manure and 35,000 tonnes of agricultural waste
products. The biogas is upgraded to 8.7 million Nm³ bio methane which is injected into the
national gas grid and is equivalent to the natural gas consumption of more than 5,800
households.

Digestive treatment technology:-

The project includes a digestive treatment technology resulting in three end products: bio
methane, clean dischargeable water and digestive or compost. High-quality fertilisers are
processed for local sales in the agriculture sector and are used as raw material. After
hygienisation, the digestive is separated into a thick and a thin fraction by a filter press. This
export worthy thick fraction is exported. The thin fraction passes through a biological
purification, which results in dischargeable water that is discharged into the sewer.

Biogas Production:-
How is biogas produced?
Biogas is produced when bacteria digest organic matter (biomass) in the absence of oxygen.
This process is called anaerobic digestion. It occurs naturally anywhere from the within the
digestive system to the depth of effluent ponds and can be reproduced artificially in
engineered containers called digesters.

There are 2 main types of anaerobic digesters:

• covered effluent ponds for liquid waste, where biogas accumulates under an impermeable cover
and is piped for processing
• Engineered digesters for semi-liquid wastes, like fermentation tanks, where the waste is mixed
and the digestion process can be controlled by heating or cooling, or by adding bacterial mix to
enhance the degradation process.

During digestion, 30-60% of the digestible solids are converted into biogas.

Feedstock for the industrial production of biogas includes:

• livestock effluents and meat processing waste

• the organic components of landfills
• any other source of biomass (e.g. wastewater treatment sludge or food and beverage industry
wastes).
How long it takes to produce biogas?
• its depends upon the initial feeding i.e. cow dung. If initial cow dung is good quality like 10 to 14
days old than to burn than after every day (24 hours) gas generates as per the amount of
feeding

What does biogas contain?

On average, biogas contains:

• 55-80% methane (CH4)

• 20-40% carbon dioxide (CO2).
• Trace gases, including toxic hydrogen sulphide and nitrous oxide.

Methane gas is particularly important as its high energy content can be used to produce
energy. Methane has 21 times the power of carbon dioxide to contribute to climate change.
Rather than letting methane from natural putrefaction escape into the atmosphere, it makes
sense to capture it and burn it. Combustion transforms methane into heat and carbon dioxide.
In doing so, you can harvest the energy content of the gas and reduce the impact on climate
change.

7.0 Skill Developed/Learning out of this Micro Project

Got to Know about biogases, Processes for getting fuels and Electricity from cow dunk and
Wastage Renewable energy Real life industrial mechanism formation of Fuel, electricity,
fertilizer through industrial mechanism for bio gas. We’ve been aware of industrial as well as
villages mechanism of bio gas for production of Fuel, electricity. Its pollution free and free of
cost and easy to use and multiple benefits. Although biogas has many disadvantages, it is
widely used in rural areas. It is a clean burning, Renewable and eco-friendly source of energy .
We need to find out the solution for increasing the efficiency of biogas plant so that is can be
used on large scale .Are biogas plants profitable? Biogas plants are beneficial for agriculture,
environment and consumers of heat and electricity. ... Admittedly, the biogas plant itself does
not require the employment of numerous staff.
