What three qualities do you think are most
necessary to be a good parent? Why are
these qualities important? Discuss, giving
examples.

Being a good parent is not easy. As a matter
of fact, perfect parents do not exist. From my
point of view, the three most important
qualities required to be a good parent are:
being affectionate, knowing how to put limits
and being respectful.

To begin with, a good parent must be loving. Children
need to feel loved. They need their parents to kiss them,
hug them, give them a pat on the back when they have
done something right. It is vital for parents to show their
love towards their children. If parents are cold and distant,
children lose their self-esteem, become insecure and feel
good for nothing. Not only should babies be caressed, but
also young children and even teenagers. It has been
proved that those children who have not been kissed or
caressed during their up-bringing later on develop some
kind of psychological problems.

I also mentioned before that it is very important for a
parent to put limits. Children need to be shown what is
right and what is wrong. If their parents are too permissive
and just let them do whatever they like, they run wild and
later on find it very difficult to live as honest, good and
hardworking people. A good parent, for his child's own
good, should sometimes forbid him to go to certain places
which he considers will not do him good. He should also
give him advice and explain him the reasons for his
decision.

Another quality needed to be a good parent is being
respectful. By this I mean that a good parent must listen
to his child. He must try to understand his ideas and
points of view, and always be ready to listen to his
problems. If a parent is respectful he will never press his
child when he is making an important decision, but he will
let him choose for himself. Parents must always let
children choose their own life.

In a nutshell, the three most important qualities needed to
be a good parent are being loving, putting limits and being
respectful. I personally believe it is very hard to be a good
parent, as all people have a tendency to want their
children to be like themselves without letting them develop
their own personality. For their children's benefit, parents
should try to develop these qualities as this is the best
way of showing them their love.
