Social Cognitive theory: An agentic perspective & Multiple Intelligences

Topic/Lesson

1. Difficult Concepts (What concepts did you find difficult to understand?)

i. Did the children observe in the experiment about Multi Intelligence knew that
they were in an experiment?
ii. Are all motivation can be transformed into reality? If so, to what extent is it
possible.
iii. Our way of thinking highly depends on our surrounding, our life-models and the
likes, how can one develop his/her own way of thinking towards self and
humanity in general?

2. Insights (What new insights or learnings did you gain in discussion/ activity?)

i. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought

Intelligence only revolves around those that excels academically. That
intelligence is about being good in mathematics and science, that is about
having good grades and receiving many awards

However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize

That Einstein was right that we can never judge a fish by its ability to climb a
tree. What do I mean? What that this mean? I am attacking the system of
education that we have. I am attacking those that are in charge in creating
curriculums, those parents and teachers who are easy to judge students based
on their grades. I am attacking the society, who, in their own simple ways,
robbed us of our ability to shine through our own light.
I grew up believing that intelligence is about being the top performer. I grew
up competing in the chaotic jungle of school. I was once the lion, the leader
of the pack, or at least that’s what I thought I was. Now, I am in college, and
now I see things differently. I am not saying this because I am now failing in
college or escaping the fact that I was not able to remain as the lion, but
rather, I now saw the beauty through diversity.

As I meet new people, it opened up my mind the same way the scientists gave
way about this co-called multiple intelligence. Through expanding my horizon,
I now realized that people are gifted differently. What I am trying to say is, the
world is composed of billions of people and you cannot judge the entire
population through one category alone.

Sure, math and science are both important. Engineers, doctors, scientists,
chemists and likes are all needed for continuous development. In the same
manner, I am a strong believer, arts are important too. We also need artists,
singers, painters, dancers. They are of equivalent importance as the professions
stated above. They create color to our life, they bring joy, happiness, they even
bring peace. Our culture as human beings, our race, our entire existence has
greatly dependent on that in the past and I believe it should continue up unto
the unknown future.

My point here is, let us not shut our eyes to the fact that the world is not only
bounded by experiments and computations. Let us appreciate everybody
and their gifts without competition. We should change our minds. Let us all
accept this theory of multiple intelligence. Let us all be more open. Let us not
be the limiting agent that limits the world and its people the capability to shine
and grow in their own personal ways at their own convenience.

ii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought

Humans are like computers, more specifically, our brain. We can process things
and use this processed information and transform them into actions.

However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize

Computers are patterned from the human brain. We could say that at some
points, artificial intelligence is far more advance than us, in all actuality, it is the
opposite. We praise technology for its ability to compute and predict
outcomes at an instant, this may be true, but mind you, our brain is far more
superior than that. We as humans, and as described in the readings have the
capability to mimic others. This mimicry affects the way we think and the way
we act. Our perception of what is right and what is not can be highly
dependent on our models whom we mimic. In the same manner, this
capability to mimic things are all summed up and became the computers we
know today. Computers mimic us the way we mimic others.

What is my point here? We are more superior than our computers. We are all
programmed as human beings the capability to analyze and think. This is very
observable in the way we respond to certain and or stimulus. Our brain stores
a lot of memories, images and experiences we have in the past. These were
all summed up in our heads transforming them into valuable information that
we use to react, respond, and view things. These all affects our decision making
and other cognitive processes. Based from the article, knowledge alone
cannot sustain our daily lives. Through experiences, we gain a different form of
knowledge, things that are way beyond books and encyclopedias that we are
able to use to deal in our daily activities.

Through the passing of time, we evolved into something/someone that is very

much rational. The way we think, and act are always backed up by reasons
and these reasons came up from our past experiences. In the same manner,
we have also developed our sense of modeling. Though naturally, as
newborns, we are highly dependent on mimicry, we slowly developed from
being a copycat to becoming an observational learner. The things we see, are
being digested in our brains, thus, we form conclusions and set of actions
depending on the situation. We learn and develop through observation and
experience.

Going back to the comparison between the human brain and its ability to
comprehend and the computer, it is now clearer to me that we are way more
advance than the computers. They are just programs programmed through
mimicry, on the other hand, I am a program programmed out of observation
and reason.

iii. Before reading the article/understanding the lesson, I thought

The theory about parallel universes are somewhat true. That if I do a certain
thing or action, I am redirecting my path to another realm and my future as
well as my reality changes as well.
However, reading the article/understanding the lesson, I now think/realize
Humans are capable of creating their own reality. By setting up goals for their
future, they are, in their own ways, creates their realities for the present. Though
it may be true that the future is solely independent because it not existent and
our actions today cannot literally become our future, by conceiving what is
possible to happen, we convert them into realities through transforming and
redirecting thoughts and perceptions as form of motivations.

Our brain has the ability to store information and comprehend on external and
environmental factors affect our way of thinking, allowing us to create
concepts and symbols which we use as our guidelines in decision making and
other cognitive processes.

In the same manner, by using these methods, people are actually profiting
from it through using things that produced success and disposing those that
yield failures. As a result, the way we think are transformed. We slowly adapt
only those possible outcomes that we have experienced and treat them as
evaluation for our self-worth, happiness, and the likes.

However, through the existence and discovery of computer and technology,

we altered the way we predict and see things for the future. Through simulation
and other computer-aided reenactments, we have extendedly and
excessively developed our way of deciding, foreknowing and creating our
realities. Future, as a form of motivation has been greatly affected, both
positively and negatively. There are instances that there are things which are
highly perceived to be possible making it a positive form of motivation. On the
other hand, there also things that are neglected because of its low probability
or chance of becoming possible and achievable, thus, removing all motivation
from an individual.

3. Questions (What questions would you want answers for? Or vague areas you
want more explanations about?
i. Is the system and quality of education we have today can be considered
as biased and crooked?
ii. Why is our education system, locally and internationally favors only those
that excels in mathematics and science?
iii. What is the importance of both topics in me, my personal development,
and my dream of becoming an engineer?
