MENTAL HEALTH

• Is the psychological state of an


individual, which may be
positive or negative. A person
who has a positive mental
health shows good signs of
well-being.
MENTAL HEALTH

• Includes our emotional,


psychological and social
well-being. It affects how
we feel and act.
WHAT IS WELL-BEING?

It is the holistic view of mental health which includes physical


wellness, spiritual wellness and psychological wellness.

Having a well-being can promote the mental health of the


individual.

Feeling happy, healthy, socially connected and purposeful.


SIGNS A OF FAILING MENTAL
HEALTH
• DEPRESSION - A persistent and extreme feeling of
loneliness, Caused by an emotional breakdown and
prolonged loneliness or feeling Sad

• ANXIETY - Characterized by irrational fear and worry


towards a situation.

• SUDDEN CHANGE OF MOOD AND BEHAVIOR –


Person's usual mood or behavior is not
present anymore.

• POOR PERFORMANCE - A person cannot maximize his


or her potential due to his or her problem.

MECHANISM
• Defense mechanisms
assist the individual
to adopt and cope
with whatever
situation he/she
found him/herself in.

• psychological mechanism
that reduces anxiety
arising from unacceptable
or potentially harmful
stimuli.
• Ego –defense mechanism
are natural and normal.

MECHANISM

1. RATIONALIZATION – Involves
inventing of excuses or reasons for
behavior that is inadequate,
unacceptable or damaging to
personal integrity and status.
2. PROJECTION – Unconscious
aggression reaction wherein there is
a transfer of inadequacies towards
an outside object or another person.

TYPES OF DEFENSE
MECHANISM

1. DISPLACEMENT – When an
individual shifts a response or
reaction from its original object
to less dangerous or threatening
object.
2. REPRESSION – Is an unconscious
forgetting of shameful thoughts, guilt
producing memories, painful
experiences or distasteful task are
removed awareness or forced below
the level of consciousness.

5. EGOCENTRISM – Is the
unconscious presentation to
superior qualities and traits.
6. REACTION FORMATION –
Is a defense mechanism where
urges that are not acceptable to
the consciousness are
repressed and opposite
attitudes or modes of behavior
are repressed.

7. REGRESSION – Is an escape
reaction in which an individual
falls back on thoughts feelings, or
behavior which works
successfully during the earlier
phase of life.
8. IDENTIFICATION – Is the
mechanism where the individual
enhances self-esteem by pattering
him/herself after another person.

1. Seeking freedom from parental
supervision – The current positive
emotional status of the adolescent can be
damaged when they fail to achieve their
freedom because of parental prohibitions.
2. Unproductive use of leisure time -
Adolescence is the period where an
individual has plenty of time and energy
for enjoyable activities. However,
adolescences may have a wrong
judgement in using their time to
things that they perceive enjoyable but
unproductive.

3. Sexual/Romantic Relationship -
Experiencing heart breaks that
triggers emotional break down and
prolonged loneliness.
4. Peer adjustment - Adolescence,
exposures to different social
activities are heightened. However
some individual fails to develop their
interpersonal skills that may help
them to interacting with other
people.

5. Career choice - Having a


wrong career choice might
trigger confusion to the
individual and question the
circumstances that are
happening to him/her.

• Make time for recreational
activities with family.
• Choose your friends
wisely.
• Avoid having enemies.
• Practice your religion.
