ENDURANCE CONSULTANCY

30-08-2019
Objective:
Familiarization with DCS hardware components and their functions.
Topics:

30-08-2019
 Fieldbus Modules (I/O Modules)
 Control Processors (CPs)
 Workstations
 Server
 Annunciator keyboards
 Communication Modules
 Termination Assembly (TA) units
 Control Network
 Power modules
 Data storage devices
 Pointing devices
 Printers

 FiledBus Modules serve as an interface between field devices and the Control Processor.

They perform necessary data conversion, providing full support for analog measurement,
discrete sensing, analog or discrete control, and digital communication.
 Converting source signals to control digital signals

 Converting control signals to final device signals

 Determining resolution of the signal

 Providing fail-safe values for the final device

 Running ladder logic and operating SOE, as required

 Providing status indicators for discrete signals

 Types:

 Analog

 Discrete

 Fieldbus communications

30-08-2019
 Communicates directly with FieldBus Modules
 Supports self-hosting mode, which allows the Control Processor to boot itself with a valid control
database.
 Executes up to 16,000 blocks of code per second and supports over 8,000 function blocks
 Supports multiple network protocol interfaces with existing plant equipment and specialty hardware
 Optional Universal Coordination Time (UTC) for external time synchronization.
 Presence of an optional global positioning system that enables external time synchronization.
 A fault-tolerant option that delivers improved availability and safety
 Two modules operating in parallel
 Two separate connections to the control network
 Continuous operation, if one module fails
 Fault-tolerant advantages:
 No bad messages sent to field

 Secondary controller in sync with primary

 Latent flaws detected in secondary

 A workstation is a graphics terminal from which an operator interacts with

the DCS to:

 Monitor and control process variables

 Receive notification of process alarms

 Acts as the human interface between a user and a process

 Provides the necessary programs to operate:

o Workstation monitors

o Alphanumeric/annunciator keyboards

o Mice or trackballs

o Touchscreens

 A Server is an Engineering terminal from which a Control System engineer

interacts with the DCS to:

 Run Windows Server Standard Edition operating system

 Design the Control database and DCS functionalities

 Support:
 Hosting control stations

 Data acquisition

 Monitoring server functions as a control HMI platform and human interface station

 Viewing HMI applications from remote client stations over Local Area Networks

(LANs)
 Processing related to a broad range of applications

 Deploying file serving capabilities

30-08-2019
 Activates alarm horn

 Offers LEDs for alarm indication

 Offers 48 or 32 buttons with numeric keypad

 Accesses displays

 Accepts labels for assigning LED/switch names to keys

30-08-2019
 Communication Module allows read/write the external
devices data and sequence programs.
 Communication can be performed with external devices
 Data can be transferred
 Monitor the status of an external device

30-08-2019
A TA unit:
 Is a field signal connection unit that links an I/O module with a set of field devices

 Provides the I/O Module with the necessary:

 Signal conditioning

 Grounding and safety features

30-08-2019
The control network comprises a number of Ethernet switches.
The control network configuration:
 Provides redundant data paths.

 Eliminates single points of failure

 Features:
 Reduce network complexity, cost, and maintenance requirements.

 System flexibility and scalability..
