CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Modern day learners engaged in school and other out- of-school activities are

experiencing a toll on their physical and mental health. Stress has been encountered

numerous times by all high school students throughout their academic years. Sometimes

stress can be a motivating tool, but too much stress can backfire and harm the student.

Being overly stressed can increase rates of irritation. Problems with mental health can not

be seen physically, and that's why many fail to comprehend those with these issues. Then

this question is asked: how do mental health disorders influence the pupil? Mental health

disorders may influence: social interactions, failure to detect environmental stimuli

(sounds, sights, or odors that may distract the student), failure to concentrate.

(Grams,2016).

Many students feel fear when first recognizing a mental health issue within

themselves, as they might not be able to figure out where it came from. Students who

previously felt nervous during public speaking but suddenly experience overwhelming

panic understandably struggle to figure out what changed. Factors such as significant life

changes, politics, family, academic pressure, relationship issues, and mostly, money can

all contribute to changes in mental health. NAMI (2019) also reports that exercise, sleep,

and diet can help students feel better or worse, depending on how well they take care of

themselves.

Having a mental illness is a difficult thing to deal with, especially as a teen. Mental

health problems cannot be physically seen, and this is why many fail to understand those
Juan Sumulong Campus

with these problems. So, this question is then asked: how do mental health disorders affect

the student in school? Mental health disorders can affect: social interactions, inability to

screen out environmental stimuli (sounds, sights, or smells which may be distracting to the

student), inability to concentrate, lack of stamina, handling time pressures and multiple

tasks, handling negative feedback, and the response to change. Having good mental health

strengthens and supports a teen’s ability to have healthy relationships, make good life

choices, maintain physical health and well-being, handle the ups and downs of life, and

discover and grow towards one’s potential. Health is very important in sustaining the

success a student may want in their academic career. Stress-management, physical health

and mental health are more important than other priorities, especially to modern-day

students. (Grams,2016)

Mental health can also be referring to the psychological and the emotional well-

being of an individual. A person who is mentally healthy is someone who is properly

adjusted to the emotional and behavioral of the necessary stresses and conflicts that are

associated every daily living. In other words, for a person who is mentally healthy, must

be in the cognitive and affective aspects of his mental state. It is also seen as the absence

of any sort of mental disorder. Usually mentally healthy person operates at an acceptable

level of behavioral and emotional adjustment in activities and interactions. Some

characteristics of a mentally healthy person is a balanced approach to the various activities

and areas of operation in constitute daily living.

Our mental, psychological and social well-being involves mental health. It

influences our way of thinking, feeling and acting. It also enables in determining how we

deal with stress, how we relate to others, and how we create decisions. At every point of

life, from childhood and adolescence to adulthood, mental health is essential.

Background of the Study

Entering senior high school is a challenging task to many students. There are new

things that are waiting for them and is unavoidable like making new relationships,

acquiring new study skills, being independent and self-reliant. There are some studies that

show rising level of anxiety and depression amongst higher education student. Other than

mental health difficulties and mental health issues, mostly it has a big negative impact to

the life of students. These issues are often supported, neglected and undetected. Mild to

severe mental health issues and difficulties are being common at first year of studies and

lack of treatment may cause a bigger impact on students. This would imply to their

academic responsibilities; lack of motivation and energy, anxiety, stress, deadlines, exam

pressure, balancing academic performance and other commitments, and the academic

grade.

Mental health difficulties and mental health issues may impose a bigger implication

to the academic performance of the students. Mental health implications of stress have been

found to correlate with negative outcomes. Hence, untreated and neglecting mental health

difficulties may lead to worse outcomes. As a result, chronicity, not being able to fully

benefit the academic institution and not being able to unleash their full academic potential.

Thus, it also relates to lower graduate rates. On the contrary, wellbeing and mental health

have a positive implication on the students’ life and learning. Distress students do not often

reach out in fear of being stigmatized and taboo of people who are suffering with mental

difficulties (M. Pastou, et al. Oct 2015)

Students are prone to mental health issues and illnesses. Learning can be hindered

by stedents’ mental health (R. Vanderlind, 2017) College students may possibly have the

worse mental health state. Anxiety depression and relationship problems are all disorders
Juan Sumulong Campus
2600 Legarda St. Manila

that affect the daily lives of the students (B. Gutierrez, 2016.) Students have the higher risk

o getting mental illnesses and children exposed to mental health issues are vulnerable to

suicide. Acccording the experts, the number of suicide cases that involves students and

students with mental illnesse has risen in the past two years. After almost 20 years, the

mental heatlh as a basic human rights was finally recognised to the phillipines (S. Cruz,

2018) This is known as Philippine Mental Health Law or Republic Act no. 11036. The

law finally recognizes the Filipinos’s right to mental health will remain the same if there is

no services available. (S. Población, 2018). According to the government data, one out of

five Filipino adults are experiencing mental health disorders. But the numbers are unclear

how the numbers apply to high school and college students. Another crucial issue is that

only one of three Filipinos will seek help from a psychiatrist and the remaining might not

be even aware of their condition.

Universities and other academic institution are becoming more of a market

industry. Do universities take care the wellbeing of their students? Many people believe

that stress is a normal thing in everyday life especially when you are a student. This is an

indication of lack of importance given and knowledge about mental health. Some people

believe Eustress or what they call positive stress has a positive impact on the students. But

most of the times students do not feel the “help” of eustress. Most of the time, students are

silently crying for help as they are struggling to maintain the balance between their

wellbeing and academic life. An underrated issue, the dilemma that students are facing in

their everyday life. Students choosing sleep and wellbeing over good grades are very low.

According to the study of Tristan Yuvienco from university of the Philippines (UP), 96%

of reported of feeling moderate to intense bouts of depression at school and 50% of them

does not feel sympathy and understanding from their family and friends. In addition,
Juan Sumulong Campus
2600 Legarda St. Manila

suicide is the second leading cause of death of the Filipinos aged 15-29. Coincidently, this

is where most of the senior high school and college students age bracket. (J. Butuyan,

2019). According to director of guidance and counseling at Ateneo’s Loyola Schools, Gary

Aguedo Faustino, “When you go to college or [you’re] 18 and above, you’re actually

firefighting [mental health problems] already, the battle is in basic [education]. If you

remember your psychology, the formative years are 12 years old and under. Much of the

serious concerns really evolve in parenting.” Faustino adds, “Since the firefighting is here,

when it’s in [grade school], you hardly see it, or you probably notice a few but still it's

contained in the home. Or it’s just a virus starting to multiply, and it rears its ugly head

here [in college],” The symptoms of mental health illnesses develop as early as 12 years

old and the majority of clinical symptoms presents before the age 14. There are some

schools that have programs that help the students’ asses their condition. In Ateneo, there

are programs integrated at each university level. In this approach, there is a shift in the role

of guidance counsellor and guidance offices and it also recognizes their importance. “You

get the feeling that there’s a lack of foundation among students. Foundation in terms of

resiliency, self-efficacy, grit, as we call it. You don’t bounce back after a failure. That’s

how we see students now. They panic. They get very anxious and eventually they become

depressed.” Maybe it is also important that the universities to play role in promoting and

fighting mental health difficulties of their students (A. Bueno, 2018)

Statement of the Problem

This study “Effects of Mental health to the academic performance of Grade 11

Humanities and social sciences at Arellano University Juan Sumulong Campus 2019-

2020” aims to determine the following:

1. What is the mental health status of grade 11 HUMSS students in terms of behavioral?

2. How does mental health affect the academic performance of grade 11 HUMSS students?

3. Is there any significant relationship between mental health and academic performance

of grade 11 HUMSS?

Hypothesis

HO: There is a significant relationship between mental health and academic performance of

grade 11 HUMSS students.

HA: There is no significant relationship between mental health and academic performance of

grade 11 HUMSS students.

Scope & Delimitation

The main objective of this study is to find the relationship between Mental Health

of the Grade 11 Humanities an Social Sciences students and it’s effect on their Academic

Performance. This study is conducted at Arellano University Juan Sumulong Campus.

This research study is to know how Mental Health affects the Academic

Performance of the students. Once the data are collected and the researchers finished this

research, the possible benefit is; if the result of the answers are positive will help the

students to keep aware of their mental health. This study will only focus on the Effects of

Mental health to the Academic Performance of Grade 11 Humanities and Social Sciences

student.

Theoretical Framework

The theoretical framework for this study is cognitive developmental theory by

Piaget (2007) and sociocultural cognitive theory by Vygotsky. Santrock (2007). Both

theories suggest that adolescents use reason in more abstract, idealistic and logical ways.

It states that development is a function of culture and social interaction.

Vygotsky Santrock’s theory (2007)

Vygotksy’s theory emphasizes how culture and social interaction guide cognitive

development. This means that knowledge is obtained collaboratively, through interaction

with others and the culture in which a person lives. Considering both of these theories, a

student has many factors that determine what type of person he or she will be. Strong

mental health support in a school setting is an additional, necessary protective factor in an

adolescent’s growth and cognitive development. School systems can be an extension of the
Juan Sumulong Campus
2600 Legarda St. Manila

family and have a strong influence on the student’s success. The information obtained

through this study has the potential to improve both micro and macro social work practice

among adolescents.

Cognitive Learning theory (1998- 2019)

Cognitive Learning Theory is a broad theory by Piaget (2007) that explains

thinking and differing mental processes and how they are influenced by internal and

external factors in order to produce learning in individuals. When cognitive processes are

working normally then acquisition and storage of knowledge works well, but when these

cognitive processes are ineffective, learning delays and difficulties can be

seen. "Cognitive psychology is the branch of psychology that studies mental processes

including how people think, perceive, remember, and learn. As part of the larger field of

cognitive science, this branch of psychology is related to other disciplines including

neuroscience, philosophy, and linguistics." (Cherry, 2014).

In the other reason, this research can increase awareness among teachers,

administrators, and school counselors. These team members were able to articulate the

need for mental health support for each student. They treat each student as a separate and

distinct person with different experiences and individual needs. Therefore, this study can

create awareness that schools need to make systemic changes. All staff aware of the study

saw a heightened need for professionals who can support the social and emotional needs

of growing adolescents.

The inputs of this study are the independent and independent variables which are

mental health and academic performance. Then we used as respondents are grade 11

HUMSS students of Arellano University Juan Sumulong Campus 2019-2020.

The process we did is we red some articles that helped us to know more about in

our research topic which is, mental health and its relationship to academic performance of

grade 11 HUMSS students. And by reading those articles we learned and knew so many

things about in our topic. We also searched what are the benefit of this study and how

mental health affect the academic performance of the students. Although, gathering those

legitimate information’s is not easy but if we are willing and determined to search

information’s that can help us in our research, it is all worth it.

We researchers are expecting that after knowing the result of this research or study

it can helps the students in their academic performance and also help the awareness of

parents and teacher about mental health of every students. We're expecting that the factors

we gathered can help them to improve their mental health and to promote better academic

performance. We want the students to be informed of how important learning mental health

affect the academic performance is. Because it is very important to learn and to be informed

of what are the benefits to have a better mental health and to promote a best academic

performance. We are really expecting that this study will be helpful to students who are

lacking of knowledge about the impact of mental health and to academic behavior of the

students. We conducted this research because we want to promote the ideas about the

effects of mental health to the academic performance of the students. We researchers do

believe that sharing is caring that's why we want you to be informed of what are the possible

outcomes if you don't lend some time to learn about impact of mental health to the students.

Significance of the Study

The study focused on getting the relationship of mental health and its effect to

academic performance of the grade 11 HUMSS students in Arellano University-Juan

Sumulong Campus year of 2019-2020.

TO THE STUDENTS:

Students will be the main beneficiary of this study because they are the subject in

our research. This will help the students to keep track of their mental health. Academic

performance is important to every student but they should be able to keep themselves

mentally healthy. Every student should always consider their well-being and not just the

final output of their academic performance.

TO THE PARENTS:

As a parent, they should always know the well-being of their children. This study

will help the parents to understand important of mental health of their children. Every

parent's support and understanding plays an important part in the process. One of the

reasons why we wanted to conduct the research is to help the parents to understand the

struggles of being a student and for the parents to keep their children's well being

TO THE TEACHERS:

This research isn't just in the favor of students as this study will also benefits the

teachers. For the students to do and behave well in class, teachers should consider the

students mental health. A student suffering under mental illness will have troubles in

learning effectively. That is why teachers should also consider the students wellbeing.

Because a student that is mentally healthy and has a good wellbeing will help both parties

to participate in the discussion and the students will learn efficiently.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the through and in-

depth search done by the researchers. This will also present the synthesis of the art,

theoretical, and conceptual framework to fully understand the research to be done and

lastly, the definition of terms for the better comprehension of the study.

Local Studies

The relationship between health and education is doubtless a close one.

(Corpuz,2016) far more attention has been paid to the importance of health for education

in the research on developing countries, documenting in particular very clearly the

importance of child and adolescent health for educational attainment and performance.

While there is obvious reason to believe that the health challenges children face in rich

countries affect education to a lesser extent than the more life-threatening health

challenges in poor countries, a potentially relevant effect of health on education in the

industrialized world cannot be automatically ruled out. This study aims to systematically

review the current knowledge of the effect that different health conditions and unhealthy

behaviors can have on educational outcomes in the context of rich countries.

Foreign Studies

Poor mental health at university is a big problem, not only because it affects how

students learn, but because it also impacts whether they actually finish their degrees.

(Gorczynski, 2018) A symptoms of poor mental health can affect the potential or the

career and life of a students and it can stop them from learning more in school
Juan Sumulong Campus
2600 Legarda St. Manila

But it seems the poor mental health of academics has received comparatively little

attention. To learn more in school. (Gorczynski, 2018) according to a survey found that

43% of academic staff exhibited symptoms of at least a mild mental disorder. This is

nearly twice the prevalence of mental disorders compared with the general population.

Mainly to blame are the pile up workloads of academics and the demand to pass it on

time while doing a bunch of school works.

Relationship problems are purported to also cause illnesses. For instance, Filipino

women living in Australia believe that the primary cause of depression is the lack of

social support (Thompson, Manderson, Woelz-Stirling, Cahill, & Kelaher, 2002). This

prompts the attitude that mental health professionals are ‘not helpful ... because a friend

could fulfill the same role’ (Thompson et al., 2002, p. 685). Emotional problems are

considered transitory and relationship-related, and can be solved by talking to friends,

family members, or trusted community members (Hechanova et al., 2011). Aside from

psychological issues, relationship problems can also cause physical illness (Edman &

Kameoka, 1997).

Many students believe that stress is normal in the everyday life of a college

student. Some might even say that stress can actually help students perform well, this

form of stress called ‘eustress’. But, oftentimes, students are not feeling the helpful rush

of ‘eustress’. In reality, they are silently struggling against the pressures of academic life.

CHAPTER 3

RESEARCH METHODOOGY

This chapter discussed the various elements of the elements of the research process.

It presented and described the research design, respondents of the study, locate of the study,

sample and sampling techniques.

Research Design

The research design that the researcher used in this study are descriptive and

correlational research design. Correlational research design is to determine whether or not

the two variables are connected.

According to Adi Bhat (2019), descriptive research is defined as a research

method that describes the characteristics of the population or phenomenon that is being

studied. This methodology focuses more on the “what” of the research subject rather than

the “why” of the research subject. In other words, descriptive research primarily focuses

on describing the nature of a demographic segment, without focusing on “why” a certain

phenomenon occurs. In other words, it “describes” the subject of the research, without

covering “why” it happens. In other person, a descriptive research design can use a wide

variety of quantitative and qualitative methods to investigate one or more variables.

Unlike in experimental research, the researcher does not control or manipulate any of the

variables, but only observes and measures them. (McCombes August 20, 2019).

Adi Bhat (2019) said that Correlational research is a type of non-experimental

research method, in which a researcher measures two variables, understands and assess

the statistical relationship between them with no influence from any extraneous variable.

While, McLeod (2018) cited the Correlation research means association - more precisely
Juan Sumulong Campus
2600 Legarda St. Manila

it is a measure of the extent to which two variables are related. There are three possible

results of a correlational study: a positive correlation, a negative correlation, and no

correlation.

The researchers used these two types of research design, correlational and

descriptive research design is to: Correlational is to identify the relationship between

mental health and academic performance of the students, who consistently studying.

Descriptive is to observe the effects or the result of the mental health of the students who

currently studying. The researches use two types of design to gather data that results the

effect of the mental health to the academic performance of students especially on grade 11

HUMSS students in Arellano University- Juan Sumulong Campus year of 2019-2020.

Research Method

The researcher used a survey method to gather all the information needed in the

researcher’s topic. Survey method is also explained as “questioning individuals on a topic

or topics and describing their responses”. In the business studies, survey method of the

primary data collection is used to test concepts, reflect attitude of people and establish the

level of customer satisfaction. Survey questions also can be used in qualitative not only in

quantitative. Survey is a list of questions aimed at extracting specific data from a particular

group of people. Survey can be conducted through phone, mail, and mostly in research

survey often used to face-to-face on school or busy street comers. (Jackson, S.L 2011)

(Singleton & Straits, 2009), Said that this type of research allows for a variety of

methods to recruit participants, collect data, and utilize various methods of

instrumentation. Survey research can use quantitative research strategies (e.g., using
Juan Sumulong Campus
2600 Legarda St. Manila

questionnaires with numerically rated items), quantitative research strategies (e.g., using

open-ended questions), or both strategies (i.e., mixed methods). As it is often used to

describe and explore human behavior, surveys are therefore frequently used in social and

psychological research.

So basically, survey method is an easy method that researcher can used to gathered

data in the quantitative research. Quantitative research is the systematically gathered data

through computation and numerous information. Survey method is where you can compute

the gathered data through formulas, equation etc. that result to your information needed.

Sampling Technique

Sampling technique are the methods applied in gathering the needed samples in the

research process. (Saunders, M. Lewis, P. & Thornhill, A, 2019) said that non probability

sampling or non-random sampling is the sampling technique where the samples are

gathered in the process are not given an equal opportunity to participate in the research.

Whilst probability sampling, all the members or the population are given an equal chance

in being selected to participate in the research.

In this study, the researchers used the purposive sampling for selecting their

respondents. The students who are under stress and other mental issues and illnesses will

be gathered to participate in this research. Purposive sampling (also known as judgement,

selective or subjective) sampling technique is a non-probability sample based on the

characteristics and objective of the study. The researchers will need to rely on their very

own judgement in gathering their respondents.
