I. LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to:
1. Identify the evolution of media from traditional to new media;
2 able to realize the importance of these media evolution to the current media sphere; and
3. Create a table time indicating the ages of media, important event and invention.

B. Developmental Activities
a) Motivation
Tell the story of the Titanic which sank at the Atlantic Ocean. Pose the question: How do you think
the news reached further in America and Europe? If the same scenario happened today, how do
you think it will be broadcast?
b) Activity
The Timetable of media ages
The class will be divided into 4 groups. Each groups will be making a table with 4 columns and 2
rows. Groups will be given sample media (tv, internet, social media, fire, motion pictures,
transistor radios) dictated and they should put these media to specific column according to types
of media.

These are as follow:

Later on, students will check the paper in the process of discussion.
c) Analysis (Per group)
Students will be tasked to answer the following questions:
1. What are the common turning points of the media evolution?
2. How does the evolution take place?
3. Did the people embrace these changes abruptly? Or with hesitance? Cite examples.
4. What is the relationship of these evolutions to each period?

c) Abstract
Pre-Industrial Age (Before 1700s) - People discovered fire, developed paper from plants, and
forged weapons and tools with stone, bronze, copper and iron.

Industrial Age (1700s-1930s) - People used the power of steam, developed machine tools,
established iron production, and the manufacturing of various products (including books through
the printing press).

Electronic Age (1930s-1980s) - The invention of the transistor ushered in the electronic age.
People harnessed the power of transistors that led to the transistor radio, electronic circuits, and
the early computers. In this age, long distance communication became more efficient.

Information (New media) Age (1900s-2000s) - The Internet paved the way for faster
communication and the creation of the social network. People advanced the use of
microelectronics with the invention of personal computers, mobile devices, and wearable
technology. Moreover, voice, image, sound and data are digitalized. We are now living in the
information age.

d) Application
The students will be tasked to complete the corrected version of the table above.
Answers will be put at the back of the paper.

1 Activity
Students will be tasked to watch a video on Media Roles in the Society. This is a compilation of
news and events that involves media in a historical movement in the Philippines.
Among others: The million people march, Pork barrel scam, tulong na Tabang na Tayo na Campaign,
etc.
2 Analysis
Call on the learners to answer the following questions:

1. How does media affect its people?


2. What are the common roles of media today? Their functions?
3. What are the effect of media to you as a student?
4. Can media change a nation?

3 Abstraction
From the students work, the teacher will discuss more about the following:
Roles and functions of media in a democratic society (possible answers)
• Channel - provides opportunities for people to communicate, share ideas, speculate, tell
stories and give information
• Watchdog - exposes corrupt practices of the government and the private sector. Creating a
space wherein governance is challenged or scrutinized by the governed. It also guarantees free
and fair elections
• Resource center - acts as a gateway of information for the society’s consumption. Also, it
becomes a keeper of memories of the community, preserver of heritage and source
of academic knowledge.
• Advocate - through its diverse sources or formats, it bridges the gap of digital divide.

4 Application
Each student will be tasked to do a poster (with slogan) to advocate WISE CHOICE OF SHS
TRACK.
Output will be working the assigned task for 20 minutes and shall be evaluated by the
following rubrics:

1 Activity: the Corporate Deliverables
By group: 4 group will be asked to choose a leader and a PR. Each group will be given a piece of
paper that consists 2 theories of media and information. Leaders will be tasked to discuss theories to
all members. After 5 minutes, PR will go other group to discuss the topic.
Then a particular group member (chosen by index card shuffle) will discuss a specific topic.
Points shall be given if the member of the group discussed the theory well.
2 Analysis
Call on the learners to answer the following questions:

1. How these theories affect our daily media and information use?
2. Among these, which theory can be most visible today? Cite example?
3. How will you use media today after knowing these theories?

3 Abstraction
THEORIES OF MEDIA AND INFORMATION
Internet of Things (IoT)- a system of interrelated computing devices, mechanical and digital
machines that has the ability to transfer data over a network.

4 Application
Each student will create their own theory of Media and information according to the current
phenomenon of media and information. This could be based on uses of media, effects and
utilization or future of media technology.
