Complete Guide to Study in China

Introduction
Every day I received lot of messages, most of them asking how to apply for a scholarship in China.

Since Last year we arranged several online sessions in a Facebook group Scholarship Network for

Pakistani students about study and life in China. That group is really useful for students applying

abroad. Comprising of hundred and thousands of members, it provides a platform where you can

discuss all your educational issues with other students and experts in the field. Even later I wrote

several articles in Urdu in Express and Daleel, guiding the students about scholarship application

process in China. But it was really difficult for me to manage the time and answering the same

questions every time. I badly needed a document that I can send to any one asking about application

procedure. Although one of my friends here at Tsinghua, Engineer Sajid Chaudhary edited one but

that was only limited to the application process. I started the document with the question why one

should choose to study in China. When ever someone starts talking about China we always think

of some low-quality substandard things connecting them with low quality education but life in

China is really very different and things are changing at very rapid pace. For a student, visiting

China to get a degree it should be very clear in his mind that he is joining the right place.

Scholarship Application process is rather simple but I have seen lot of brilliant students able to get

scholarship very easily on their own are visiting the consultant and paying the huge amount of fee.

On the other hand, lot of talented but poor students can’t afford this so they even don’t try in most

cases. The actual thing is most of excellent universities and one of the most prominent funding

agencies CSC in China don’t operate through the consultants at MS and PhD level. So, if you try

by yourself you can save a lot of money. But how? Another thing is document preparation, which

documents we need and how to manage all that stuff. Specially writing the mails to professor,

making a CV and writing a research proposal. Students make mistakes here. Lot of stuff in English

language is available about all these problems. What I have done is just combine all that material

at one place and edited where necessary according to the need of Pakistani Students. Still lot of

things are missing. For example, I should add more in frequently asked question section. But due

to limited time I was unable to add at this moment. I will keep updating this and of course, with

all your suggestions and comments, I hope we can improve this document making it more

understandable and helpful in guiding the students through all this process.

While Copying the data I haven’t copied the whole article from one web source Instead two, three

different sources have been used. I have given the links at the end of each section. If you want to

read in detail please visit the original websites. Also, you can join the group Scholarship Network

to remain update about the process. We have another group for Career Counselling, if you are

facing any issue in your education you can discuss here. We are also managing the NAYS China

Chapter. I wish you all a successful career. Remember me in your prayers.

Complete Guide to Study in China

Why You Should Study in China

Higher education in China has gone from strength to strength in recent years, with an increasing

number of institutes appearing among the Times Higher Education World University Rankings

2018. Directives including Project 211 and Project 985 – which aim to improve the standards of

the top 100 and 40 Chinese universities respectively – combined with huge national investment

has seen China’s reputation in the education sector rocket up the rankings. And who wouldn’t want

to study there? An enormous country, home to more than 20 per cent of the people on Earth, China

has one of the fastest developing economies. From cuisine to culture, China offers something

completely unique. The huge country is home to some of the most diverse and stunning landscapes

on the planet; from the Rainbow Mountains in Zhangye, to the fishing villages along the coast and

even the incomprehensibly vast cities that continue to expand, there’s something in China for

everyone. Students looking to study abroad have an increasing number of options and China is

becoming more and more popular, according to research from Student.com, which provides

accommodation for international students. Here are five reasons to consider joining the throngs of

international students already there.

1. Chinese universities have a growing reputation

Chinese universities are increasingly well respected; the number included in major global

university rankings has risen significantly over the past five years. Globally, there are three

commonly cited international rankings of world universities – the Academic Rankings of World

Universities (or ARWU – formerly known as the Shanghai Jiao Tong Rankings), the Times Higher

Education World Rankings, and the QS World Rankings. Chinese universities have been steadily

improving their rankings on these international platforms for the past decade.

6 Edittedy by Kamran Amin

Complete Guide to Study in China

For example, in the QS university ranking in 2016, there were only 4 Universities in the top

100 but in 2018 there are 6 universities making their name into the top 100. Tsinghua University

was on number 25 in the world in 2016 but in 2018 Tsinghua ranked no 14 in the word universities.

Similarly, Peking university has improved its ranking from 41 to 30 these in these two years.

In 2015, China announced its largest education development scheme to date - the “Double

First-Class initiative”, a plan that aims at increasing the global recognition of China’s university

system by 2049 (the 100-year anniversary of the establishment of the People’s Republic of China).

An implementation plan and list of universities and disciplines were announced in 2017. The

Double First-Class Initiative identifies 42 Universities of having the potential to develop as world

class. This includes all of the 39 universities from the “985” project plus 3 former “211” project

universities. Furthermore, 465 disciplines from 140 universities (including the 42 universities)

have been identified as having the potential to become world class disciplines.

The QS BRICS University Rankings, published in 2017, sees Chinese universities making

up almost a third of the institutions featured – 94 positions out of a total of 300. The BRICS ranking

has been published each year since 2013 and aims to highlight the strongest universities in the five

emerging economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, and China boasts the most

entrants in the ranking among the five countries, as well as seven spots in the top 10.

2. Large Number of Scholarships for International Students

Financial support is an important factor in the decision to study abroad and the Chinese

government is offering a wide range of funding opportunities to attract international students,

including more than 40,000 scholarships at 277 institutions. In 2015, 40 per cent of all international

students new to China received government sponsorship. The number of scholarships available

has increased fivefold since 2006. Eligibility depends on nationality, but everyone should be able
7 Edittedy by Kamran Amin

to find at least one that they can apply for. Scholarship schemes include the Chinese Government

Scholarship Program, Chinese University Scholarship Program, Local government scholarship

program, Confucius Institute Scholarships, CAS-TWAS fellowship, the Chinese Government

Scholarship Program for EU, Study in Asia Scholarship Scheme, and China/AUN Scholarship.

Some institutions have their own scholarship schemes, awards, and bursaries, and there are some

that are specific to a particular city or region; the Beijing Government Scholarship for international

Students, for example, assists bright students with assistance towards studies cost in Beijing.

3. You’ll be joining a growing trend

China is an increasingly popular destination for students from around the world, with the number

of international students in China doubling in the past 10 years. China is already the fourth most

popular destination for travel generally and has the third-largest population of international

students, behind the US and the UK. This number has been growing by an average of 10 per cent

a year for the past 10 years, a far quicker growth rate than any other popular study-abroad

destination. Many academic institutions have advisers who can assist foreign students with any

help they may be eligible for, so it is well worth contacting them and giving it a shot!

4. There are more options than ever

Over the past 10 years, international visitors and students have been going “deeper” into China,

choosing to travel to a wider range of cities than before. In the past, Shanghai and Beijing were

the only cities where it was common to see international students. In 2006, nearly 50 per cent of

international students were in Beijing or Shanghai, but this has fallen to 32 per cent. Today, there

are 13 cities across China with more than 10,000 international students, with seven cities having

more than 20,000 students. Popular cities include Guangdong in the south of China and Liaoning,

north of Beijing.

5. It could be great for your career

Knowledge and experience of China is an increasingly valuable asset in many industries. As the

fourth most popular destination for international travel, with nearly 12 million business trips to

China in 2015, the country is growing in economic and cultural significance. Experience of China

and Chinese, which is the third most popular language to learn in the world, could give you a great

career boost.

6. Quality of Education and International Recognition

China is striving to build more world-class universities, and investing heavily in higher education.

Aside from China's unique Chinese language, calligraphy, martial arts and other cultural subjects,

Chinese degree programs in majors such as engineering, science, medicine, economics and trade,

MBA as well as finance are highly revered. As for those who don't know any Chinese, many

universities offer degree programs taught in English, so you can earn your degree while learning

the most widely spoken language in the world. The academic qualifications awarded by Chinese

universities are recognized by most developed countries. The Chinese government has signed an

agreement on mutual recognition of academic qualifications with a number of countries including

the United States, Britain, France, Japan and 65 other countries and regions.

7. Employment Advantages

When it comes to economics, China has been the world's fastest growing country for the past 30

years. Even during the financial crisis, China's economic growth has maintained a level of 8%, a

pace unthinkable in other countries. China's GDP recently surpassed Japan's to become the world's

second largest economy after the United States. The world's top 500 companies all do business in

China, with many choosing to base their Asia-Pacific headquarters in the bustling Chinese cities

of Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing.

The current rise of China has made it very clear that people who can speak Chinese and have

firsthand experience of living in China are going to have a great advantage in terms of employment.

China serves as a huge market for multinational corporations, and employers are well aware that

a real understanding of China, Chinese culture and Chinese people is a big plus for those who want

to become the world's next generation of leaders.

Applying for Chinese Scholarships:

How to apply for any Master or P.H.D Degree Scholarships.

Note: CSC is fully funded scholarship by Chinese government.

You must not pay any single penny to any Agent between You and CSC because CSC believes in

direct link between Students and them.

Procedure is described below in Steps:

Most of excellent Chinese Universities offer admission only once in a year and admission process

starts in or around November and last till May. The scholarship application procedure starts at the

end of November and lasts till the end of March. So, if you want to apply in China you should

remember these dates. Result awaiting students can also apply for scholarships or admission if

they can get their degree before the May-June (date varies university to university). For example,

if you are going to grade in the year 2019 and you can get your degree before the June of 2019 you

may apply for the scholarships for the session started from September 2019 based on a hope

certificate.

The first phase of your application process is start preparing your documents. At first you may

need an academic CV and a research proposal to write a letter/ E mail to the professors for the

acceptance letter. You should complete this step before the Oct-Nov. The steps for this phase are:

18 Edittedy by Kamran Amin

Complete Guide to Study in China

1. Apply for Passport

2. Make an attractive academic CV

3. Prepare a research proposal along with a motivation letter.

4. Find a university that suits your interest and majors, track its faculty and find a supervisor

closely related to your field. E mail to that professor mentioning that you want to study

under his supervision. You may write to different professor at this step. Get an acceptance

letter. Two or three letters of acceptance from different universities are more than enough

to secure a position. Acceptance letter is not necessary but it increases the chances of

selection.

Now wait for the admission process to start. Visit the university website and CSC website for the

dates and when it starts apply online. For CSC you need to apply online through CSC website and

later need to send the hard copy to the designated university. But universities also need you to

apply for the admission in the university through the university website. Please read the guidelines

and follow as suggested.

Also see the website of the university for the available scholarships. If there are more than one

scholarship available apply for all. Select the university with greater number of scholarships. That

will increase your chances of selection. Arrange 2 sets of all documents mentioned on CSC website

and send both sets on University Address for which you have applied for.

For CSC application one must need to register at following website:

Visit http://www.csc.edu.cn/laihua or www.campuschina.org and click “Scholarship Application

Appendix:
1. Strategy for Scholarships Aspirants

By Shazia Farman Ali Qazi

1. Start by making a good CV (academic).

2. Also prepare and give IELTS/TOEFL/GRE (whichever you prefer as it depends upon the

requirements of university / country) but is necessary to gain admission in high /good ranking

universities. Good scores are must as average will not do much in gaining scholarship.

3. Make all your education documents in order that is transcripts, degree certificates, attestations

of all the degrees and transcripts by HEC etc. Up-to-date and correct travel documents like CNIC,

Passport, Police verifications, health certificates etc.

4. Prepare statement of interest/ motivation also prepare answers to some basic questions;(why u

want do this degree from abroad, what skills will this degree bring to you, where do u see yourself

in 5 years from now, how would you contribute to country once you return back etc etc.) to help u

fill applications / pass interview. (you can also search a file uploaded by me with name typical

interview questions)

5. Select 2 to 3 subjects of your interests (if u r masters student) and /or Outline basic research

proposal if research student (at this stage it should be for yourself to be clear which area u want to

study ahead and u become familiar with issues and current ongoing work in the area ... u can

always modify this later according to changes required e.g. after discussing with Professor ... this

is also necessary to create good impression with your prospective supervisor when u discuss your

intentions) this should be made even if u r applying for non-research degree to know about the

background area of your interested subject.

29 Edittedy by Kamran Amin
Complete Guide to Study in China

6. In light of above subjects /outlined proposal, target universities / departments u want to do your

studies from (to know their specific eligibility criteria) ... try collecting all the materials required

for admission and apply in it to get admission offer. some scholarships require that candidates

already hold an admission offer.

7. Search interested universities websites, if these universities offer scholarships / funding (note

most of the universities offer them but they are very competitive).

8. Also look for other scholarships that are offered by Government / International organization e.g.

Commonwealth scholarship, DAAD & Fulbright, Vanier Canada, Singa Scholarships, Endeavour

Scholarships, Türkiye Bursları scholarships, Twain Scholarships, Korean scholarships, Chinese

scholarships, Bestway Foundation scholarship, Anne Marie Schimmel Scholarships, Vicky Noon

Oxford University scholarship, Strathclyde-Pakistan50th Anniversary Scholarship etc. … for these

scholarships go to donor / sponsors/ university website as usually they open between May - Nov.

You may also target those universities that offer scholarships to international students e.g. in UK

many universities like Uni of Manchester, Uni of Bath, Edinburgh Uni, Kings College, Queens

University Belfast, Cardiff University etc. offer once a year.

9. Fill in the forms carefully & proof read (no spelling mistakes, no formatting mistakes and all

required documents in order). A good scholarship application takes minimum 2-3 weeks to get

ready.

10. Be prepared for investing time, hard work and rejections but don't lose hope and be persistent

- it normally takes between 6 months to 2 yrs. to get one.

2. How to Prepare A good Academic CV

Once you've decided on the department(s) and supervisor(s) you are going to contact and
apply to, it is likely you will need to submit an academic CV as part of your application.

For a PhD position an academic CV is usually required to demonstrate your ability to

undertake a PhD. A CV which is used when applying for a PhD position varies from a
standard CV or resume used when applying for a conventional job.

Your academic CV should provide a concise overview of your academic background and
academic accomplishments.

Formatting a CV for a PhD application is fairly simple and straight-forward, but there may be
variations across different areas of academia, so it's best to consult with members of your
particular department, regarding any specifics attached to your field.

Your academic CV needs to consist of a detailed subject breakdown of your University

undergraduate and postgraduate (if applicable) degrees.

Many applicants also include a brief summary of their GCSE and A Level results, this is not
mandatory and should only be included if you feel it is in any way relevant to your
application.

As a general guideline, your academic CV may include the following:

Personal Details and Contact Details - This should include your name as the document
title, with all other details beneath.

Education and Qualifications - Make sure this is in reverse chronological order. Include
any relevant qualifications and/or relevant awards and prizes.

Relevant Work/Research Experience - This can include both full time and part time work,
paid or voluntary. Remember to keep this relevant to your application.

Skills - Include specialist and technical skills, along with IT skills, plus any skills that would
be crucial for the PhD position.

Posts of responsibility - Highlight any post of responsibility, such as course organisation.

Attendance at conferences and seminars - List any conferences and/ or seminars you have
attended or been invited to.

Interests/hobbies - Include any journals, relevant to your application, you read to keep
abreast of new developments. Other relevant hobbies and interests should also be included.

Referees - Include at least two academic referees who have given you permission to be
included in your CV.

When writing your PhD application, nothing is more important than realising who will be
reading your CV.

3. Writing a Research Proposal

Regardless of university specific requirements, most of the research proposals usually include:

▪ Title and abstract: In case of predefined PhD projects, a title is usually provided by the

university. In other cases, an applicant is expected to provide a preliminary title which will

be further elaborated in the process of thesis writing. An abstract should usually be no

longer than a page, and provide a brief summary of what you are going to cover in your

research proposal.

▪ Literature review: The literature review demonstrates the applicant’s knowledge of the

main research achievements in the area of study. You should pay attention to providing

some of the key references in your area of research which requires doing extensive research

on your part.

▪ Research problem, aim and objectives: As a result of your literature review, you should

identify the main gap in your research area on which you are going to focus in your PhD

project. Once the research problem is identified, you will be able to pose the main aim and

objectives of your project.

▪ You should dedicate some space to Research methodology, or, in other words, explaining

how you are going to go about doing your research. This section also demonstrates your

knowledge of the existing research methodologies in your area of study.

32 Edittedy by Kamran Amin
Complete Guide to Study in China

▪ Ethical considerations: You should check some literature on ethics of conducting

research in your area and outline some key ethical aspects related to the proposed project.

▪ Increasingly applicants are asked to outline the impact of their research studies. This can

include both the impact on your research area and society in general. It is important to

dedicate some time to this section since it will add more value to your proposal.

▪ References: Do not forget to specify all the references at the end of the proposal.

4. Sample E mail to professor

An E mail should start with the name of professor, body should include the applicant’s brief
introduction, what he has done so far and what he wanted to do next. Why he has chosen that
university and professor. Mention the few of research items by professor. It will leave a good
impression.
