B. Review of Past Activity!

We have already finished discussing
about the basic parts of sentences.
Before we move on, let us have a recall
of what are the basic parts of a sentences.
So, what are they? Subject and Predicate

How are the subject and predicate The subject is the one being
related with each other? talked about while the
predicate tells about the
action of the subject or action
given to the subject.

Correct. And sometimes subjects are

also pronoun and predicates are verb.
So, oor topic for today is related with
Subject and Predicate. Or the
Subject-Verb Agreement.

There are seven rules which govern subject

which govern subject- Verb Agreement.
I will tell you each of the rules and give
an example afterwards, you will your own
example.

C. Motivation
Before anything else, I would like you to
write one verb on the board. One each. (The students will write verbs)

Very Good! Now we will discuss all those

verbs.

D. Presentation
Remember class that verbs, unlike nouns,
have the S-form of the word for the
singular form and the base form for its
plural form. Please take a look at the
examples.

Example:
S-Form Singular
Sings, dances, writes, eats

Base Form
Sing, Dance, write, eat

Did you understand Yes! Ma’am.

Very good! Now we will move

on with the lesson regarding to
the rules on the Subject-Verb
Agreement.

1. Singular subjects take singular verbs.

Plural subjects take plural verbs.

Example:
Claudine knows how to sing.
(singular)

We recognize our own rejected thoughts.

Now, give your own example. Maricar attends the Academy

Awards.

Joy and Jay are one of the

characters on the play.

2. The verb agrees only with its subject.

Words between subject and verb do
not affect the number of the subject.

Example:
The luster of the firmament of bards
and sages dazzles people.

Notice that although the intervening

words are in plural form, both the
subject and the verb are in singular
form.

Now, give your own example. One of the obstacles of self-

reliance is conformity

3. The words some, all, most, any,

are singular when they refer to
quantity or a collection taken as one.
On the other hand, they are plural
l when they refer to a number or a
collection taken as several times.

Example:
Most of the work was begun by original
thinkers. (quantity)

Some of the ideas exposed by Emerson

were misunderstood.

Give another example. Any of the students are allowed

to participate.

4. A compound subject joined by and

takes a plural verb. When they referred
to us one unit, it takes singular verb.

Example;
Conformity and consistency are two
obstacles of self-reliance. (separate units)

The writer and the lectures of great

renown was a speaker of Harvard.
(one unit)

Who wants to give another example? The actress and the model are
going to have movie together.

Very good class! Before we continue

our discussion with the three remaining
rules, let us first have some fun.

E. Application
Choose the correct form of the verb.
1. John, along with the other students
(think, thinks) of pursuing a science career.
2. There (is, are) a good chance of
thunderstorm in Metro Manila today.

F. Generalization
