Nutrition professionals play an increasingly vital role in the health and wellness
industry. As convenience foods increase in popularity and people struggle to
balance proper nutrition with day-to-day demands, many are beginning to turn
their attention to the role their diets play in their overall health. In fact, according
to the World Health Organization, at least 80% of chronic diseases and 40% of
cancers can be prevented and treated through a healthy diet and physical activity.

Demand for health and wellness professionals is higher than ever and growing fast.
From 2016-2018, the health and wellness industry experienced a 12.8% spike and
is showing no signs of slowing down. Out of the $4.2 trillion industry, the healthy
eating, nutrition, and weight management landscape makes up $702 billion.
According to research firm Technavio, the health and wellness industry can expect
growth of at least 6% from 2018 through 2020. Another research organization,
Nielsen, notes in a recent report that “most consumers are more interested
in staying out of the doctor’s office than they are about scheduling their next
physical.” This is leading many people to take charge of their nutrition and fitness
goals in meaningful, long-term ways.
With such high demand in the industry, a wide variety of specialty areas, and
flexible job options, career paths in the area of nutrition are becoming highly
sought after. Most jobs for nutrition professionals are very people-oriented,
getting to know clients on a personal level and helping them make adjustments to
their diet and lifestyle that suit their individual needs. It’s a highly rewarding career
path that presents the opportunity to make a direct, personal impact on your
clients’ quality of life.

Holistic Nutritionist Certification Program curriculum!
Holistic nutritionists generally meet with clients and conduct an initial interview,
assess their current health and eating habits, and observe any conditions that may
be present. During their client-coaching relationship, a holistic nutritionist will:
Of course, no career path offers all of these things at once. Opting for perks,
such as flexible hours, often means you won’t receive health benefits or a steady
paycheck, so it’s important to set your priorities based on the lifestyle you’re
seeking.
Let’s explore some of the pathways you can take as a certified holistic nutritionist!
Entrepreneurship:
Start your own independent consulting practice: Many nutrition professionals
choose to start their own business, find their own clients, and set their own hours
and rates. Whether you work one on one with clients, partner with other holistic
professionals to offer a wider range of services, host events, or build your business
online, there are boundless opportunities to keep expanding your business and
optimize your revenue sources. Working for yourself also means you have the
flexibility to decide where and when you work and what services you do and don’t
provide, and you get to make creative, strategic decisions for business growth and
explore your ideas.
Start an online business: There are many pathways you can take if you want to
run your business online. While some opt for remote one-on-one client work via
video calls, there are also opportunities for blogging, podcasts, YouTube,
social media coaching, subscription-based programs, and so
much more. We cover some of the basics for How to Start Your Online Nutrition
Business in one of our recent blog articles.
Start your own restaurant, outdoor cafe, or food truck: If you’re passionate
about serving people healthy food, starting a restaurant or a food truck could
be a great option for you. New laws are requiring establishments to list their
nutrition facts and calorie counts on their menus, and it can be a bit shocking
how unhealthy restaurant food, even the salads, can be. Health food restaurants
are now growing in popularity as restaurant guests increasingly request healthier
options. Food trucks can be a great mobile and lower-overhead option to get
you started!
Become a personal chef: If you love to cook but you’d rather work with clients on
a more personal level, becoming a personal chef could be a great option for you.
Personal chefs often come to their clients’ homes and prepare meals for them.
There’s often a personal element of consulting, understanding what their clients’
needs are, designing nutritional solutions, and helping them develop new habits,
and then teaching them how to prepare healthy meals for themselves.
Employment:
Wellness Centers & Spas: As an increasing number of people are interested and
investing in their own health and wellness, the industry is growing to meet the
demand. More wellness centers and spas are including nutrition professionals
on staff, particularly at resorts and retreat organizations. In fact, the new market
of wellness tourism is growing with the popularity of wellness, health, and yoga
retreats. The opportunities in this market are growing as organizations look to
expand their services to include healthy food options for their guests.
Fitness Clubs and Private Studios: Many fitness clubs and gyms already have
fitness consultants on staff in order to provide personalized training programs
to their clients. As competition increases, more gyms are now expanding their
offerings and adding nutrition professionals to their staff to stand out in the market
by rounding out their health and wellness service offerings.
Weight Loss Programs: More weight loss programs are adopting holistic values
and focusing more on forming healthy eating habits, rather than promoting
restrictive diets. This comes with reported issues of keeping the weight off as
a result of unsustainable deprivation and overly rigid diet programs. Many are
moving away from this “crash dieting” model and are looking to couple holistic
nutrition with a consistent exercise routine for longer-term weight loss solutions.
Colleges and Universities: While college-level sports teams can benefit from
the support of holistic nutritionists to help the players improve their athletic
performance, it’s not just the athletes who can benefit from your insights. With so
many unhealthy dining hall options, poor diets can result in a decline in physical
health and academic performance. Many colleges and universities hire health
professionals to guide students, faculty, and staff to create healthier eating habits
to reduce stress and boost overall wellness for everyone on campus.
No matter what career path you choose, nutrition is an exciting, growing field that
is rich with earning possibilities.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national median salary for
nutrition professionals is about $58,000. However, earning potential can vary
greatly, especially if you use your skills and insight for both salaried and non-
salaried opportunities.
It’s important to keep in mind that there are several key factors that impact your
earning potential in any type of career you choose within the nutrition industry.
■■ Location: Where you live, the cost of living there, and the demand for
nutritionists in your area all impact earning potential through various job
options.
■■ Education: Many clients or employers won’t even consider you unless you have
some formal education as a nutritionist. There are two education tracks you
can take: a college degree or a certification.
■■ Experience: How long you have been working as a nutritionist or in a relevant
field can make a difference in your salary or what clients will be willing to pay
for your services.
Overall, the salaries for nutrition professionals can range from $25,000 a year to
$125,000 a year and beyond. It’s up to you to define your career path, create and
identify opportunities, and spend time on personal and professional development
in order to maximize your earning potential while maintaining your ideal lifestyle.

If this sounds like you, you’ll find that there are a lot of career options for you as
a certified holistic nutritionist. You can select a path of searching for a job in a
variety of work environments, such as medical spas, corporate offices, holistic
health clinics, or remote work. Alternatively, many nutrition professionals opt for
self-employment and build an independent consulting practice that they can run
from home or while traveling. There are also a wide range of specialties that you
can choose from to direct your focus on what you’re passionate about and who
you want to help.
The health and wellness industry has so many opportunities for careers in which
you build deep and purposeful relationships with your clients. It is boundlessly
rewarding to be able to make a profound difference in improving the quality of an
individual’s life.
You can help clients navigate the challenges that come with meal planning,
identifying their individualized nutrition needs, developing healthy everyday habits,
and pairing nutrition with fitness. As the American Nutrition Association notes, the
path to true health is a personal one, and what’s right for one person might not
work for another. That’s causing many people to look toward professionals who
can offer insights on those personalized choices.
Not only does that provide job security, but it also gives you enormous flexibility
when it comes to tailoring your career. With so many options across the nutrition
landscape, you can build an impactful career you’re passionate about, that also
supports a lifestyle you love.
While there are several organizations that offer educational courses on topics in
the health and wellness industry without a certification, it’s important to consider
why you should select a program that offers certification before you invest time or
resources into enrolling in an educational program.
Making big decisions about your career and continued education can be
overwhelming. We are here to help make it simpler by providing all the information
you need to feel confident in your choice.
Before making a commitment, we suggest looking into all of these factors for each
program you’re considering.

■■ What will your total investment be? A lot of schools charge thousands of dollars
for program enrollment and only provide non-accredited credentials, meaning
you’ll need to invest more after completing the program to get certified. Make

materials you have requested to be shipped to you. Move through them at your

As you complete the program, you will test your knowledge through chapter
quizzes, review questions, and assignments that are designed to support your

followed by a comprehensive online certification examination.
