From Life in Space

by Laura Linn
After months of living together in cramped quarters, the new room was a
welcome addition for the three explorers. 19

But this wasn’t just any room in any home. “Home” is the International
Space Station (ISS), in which three astronauts are orbiting Earth more
than 250 miles above the planet. The “room” is the Destiny, a science
laboratory that was delivered to the outpost last month by the space
shuttle Atlantis. 70

“The Destiny looks awesome,” officials at Mission Control in Cape

Canaveral, Florida, told the space crew after the delivery. “We hope you
guys enjoy your new room on your house.” 100

The International Space Station is helping to pave the way for living in
space. 114

The ISS is a home and work center for astronauts who are sent to live
and do science experiments in space. 135

The space station is still a work in progress. New portions will be added
every few months or so over the next five years. The United States,
Russia, Japan, and 13 other nations are building the ISS, which will
stretch, when it’s completed, as tall as a 20-story building with a wingspan
wider than a football field. 193
