Assignment 1

Case Study: Roles in Curriculum Design, Development, and Review

The purpose of this assignment was to examine the roles in curriculum design,

development, and review by choosing one of three case studies from the weekly readings

(Iwasiw, Andrusyszyn, & Goldenberg, 2020; Billings & Halstead, 2016). This assignment

focused on a small group of stakeholders (nursing faculty) that believed they had identified

a deficiency in the current curriculum. The group believed the current curriculum has

become inadequate to prepare students to adeptly practice in healthcare and society

situations which they may come across post-graduation. The assignment allowed for

exploration of influences and factors for learning about curricular change such as

encouraging faculty to review present curriculum, assess approaches used by the small

group of stakeholders, propose other methods that could be raise concerns of small

stakeholders, describe data needed by the nursing faculty in order to persuade the

Committee. This assignment also listed how backing of faculty for change could be gained,

respond to possible criticism, recommend a tactful means for nursing faculty to consider

whether loyalty to their nursing practice specialties might dominate the bigger perspectives

of nursing required for current undergraduate nursing education for understanding the

roles in curriculum design, development, and review. Finally, the assignment identified

how long is the natural expiration date of a curriculum.

The learning outcomes for this assignment allowed the student to gain insight in learning to

examine issues related to curriculum design in nursing education, delineate faculty roles

within the process of curriculum design or redesign, and connect instructional design with

curriculum development for the role of nurse educator.
