Homework #2

Summary – Forged In Fire

#1. Mainly we can realize or affirm how important the amount of carbon is in a
material as is the steel still in the making of knives and other elements, since by
combining the metal (iron) with the metalloid (carbon), the iron retains its
properties metals and their properties are improved thanks to the addition of the
second.

#2. Working hot, we could observe that the steel took knife form through a process
where it was essential to bring this material at high temperatures, as this way you
can stretch the material and form workpieces (in this case knives), this is
because this during hot work is more ductile and less hard, which facilitates the
forging in this particular case.

#3. In some part of the video we could see that Victor had certain problems when
tempering the material (heat treatment used in the video), this was due to the
temperature he had before entering the steel into the water was not adequate for the
tempering, it is very important the abrupt change of temperature in this case to obtain
the proper hardness of the material and thus the surfaces.

#4. During the video there were many hammer blows this is due to the forging
process, in this case a hot slab was made where the material is hit against an
anthem, since it is easier because the material is allowed to mold what would be a
very difficult job to do in a steel by cold work in addition this improves the strength of
the material.

#5. Heat treatment, a process in which the internal structure of the material is varied,
to achieve hardness or flexibility, it is important that the material has a uniform heat
treatment to avoid the difference in hardness, in the case of knives if there is no
hardness the material can be broken somewhere, either by the handle, the tip, or
the middle part of the knife.

#6. Delamination, situation in which the steel is divided into layers, this can be
caused by the thermal shocks that the material has, after being hit at cold work the
material can become have certain divisions, which can be observed as yes when
hitting it and l material instead of shrinking or compressing it expands.

#7. The difference in hardness between two materials that are impacted on each
other or that in this case that one material impacts another can be evidenced when
the knives hit the bones, because if the knives are not hard enough, the bone breaks
them or would explode them, which happened with two of the knives in the video,
not having the proper heat treatment, lost certain hardness properties which caused
them to break at the time of the test.

#8. thickness or hardness, there is a big difference between these words, it could be
shown in the video that for the edge it is important that the material is thin, but that it
does not lose the hardness properties, the two knives that were broken had a similar
thickness or not very different to the other two, but this was not why they broke.

#9. To maintain the hardness, it is important not to heat the material anymore, it was
what could be observed at the time that Azael used water to protect the hardness of
the edge part and a little higher than this in his knife, as he needed to fix some
imperfections in the pa you're up.

#10. In general, the finalist knives were fine, but the judges always talked about the
uniformity of the material, this is because it is very difficult to maintain the same
thickness in all the material, since when the process of forging the material is not
always being made it is at the same temperature and that combined with the force
of the hammer causes in certain parts the matter to compress more than in others
which is irreversible.
