CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter presented the introduction, background of the study, statement

of the problem, assumptions, Significance of the study, the scope and delimitation

of the study and the definition of terms.

Introduction

In this generation, Facebook has been widespread for a long time.

According to Daniel Nations (2018) Facebook is a social networking website

where users can post comments, share photographs and post links to news or

other interesting content on the web, chat live, and watch short-form video. And

because many millennials uses facebook, they did not realize that there is an

impact of using facebook to their academic performance. It has some positive

effects such as using it as their way of gathering informations, sharing some ideas

and their way of communicating. But on the contrary, this also gives some

negative effects. Using facebook can lead to procrastination, and they always

focuses on using facebook than doing their works about academical matters. The

millennials became addicted on using facebook because of their own curiosity

browsing facebook. The topic is more than interesting, a group of ABM students

from 1206 of SY: 2018-2019 became eager to find some information about the

different impacts of using facebook to the Academic Performance of Grade 12

ABM Students. They become eager to seek ideas on how can grade 12 abm

students manage their own academics performance while they are using

facebook. Hence this study was conducted.

Background of the Study

In this study many students are using facebook while inside the classroom

this causes lack of understanding of the lesson. Some students skip their tasks

that are given by the teachers that cause of lack of time to do the activities. As a

result the students cannot finish and do not have enough time to answer their

works or to pass the tasks. The students get lower grades and have many

absences or lates because of spending too much time using facebook. And also

do not have time to communicate to others that causes losing of communication

and self esteem. Facebook is more than one billion users make it a cultural,

economic and social phenomenon. The importance of the online social media site

to journalism, business, communication and social relationships is hard to

overstate, with users across the world devoting countless hours to the site and

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

This chapter presented the related local and foreign literature and studies, the

conceptual framework, theoretical framework and the synthesis of the related

review of literature and studies.

Local Literature

According to Rejie D. Astodello (2016), the author of Impact of social media to

student’s lives, academic performance, Since students are highly motivated to

using social media sites the majority of them use these to satisfy their social

needs more than their academic needs. They have the freedom to do whatever

they want – they can upload or download data, they can make new friends and

comment on other people’s lives, and they can even create other online identities

the real world does not allow. It has been observed toothat the majority of the

students nowadays, particularly those in the secondary level, spend most of their

time chatting with their acquaintances, playing online games, and watching videos

instead of reading their lessons, making their assignments, and other academic

requirements. The main reason is when they work or search their materials online

they get attracted to social networking sites to kill boredom during study time,
WFDF
GDFD

diverting their attention from their work. The darker side of this that has gained the

attention of many parents is that some students are getting lazier and are no

longer interested in going to school. This is probably due to being extensively

indulged to get global access and therefore leading them to perform less

academically.

Astodello have observed from his Grades 7 and 8 students at the Tabuk City

National High School the same positive and negative impact of using social media

inside and outside the classroom. He found these social sites helpful when one

time he needed to communicate with his students, reminding them of their

assignments and urgent requirements. In addition, he also used these social

sites to refer his students to helpful resources that could fetch them higher grades

in academics. He tried to encourage the students, particularly the teens with

gadgets having internet facilities, to use it to supplement their researches in the

library rather than the usual chatting with friends all the time.

According to Alexander S. Gudia (2017), author ofSocial Media On Students

Academic Performance: Boon Or Bane? , Social media is a rising trend in the

world today. Communication skills are exemplified by the use of social media

networking. Social media networking allows for a communication outlet. Social

media is being utilized by students, parents, businesses, and religious

organizations. It is being used in many forms by many different platforms for many

reasons.Over the course of several years, social media has changed dramatically.

Because of social media, people today can exchange ideas, feelings, personal

information, pictures and videos at a truly astonishing level. Social networking is

one of the most active web-based activities in the Philippines, with Filipinos being

declared as the most active users on a number of web-based social networks such

as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. The use of social media has

become so extensive in the Philippines that the country has been tagged as “The

social networking capital of the world,” and has also become part of Filipino

cyberculture (Wikipedia). The effects of these social media can be considered

positive but also has some negative consequences. It increases student

collaboration, improves participation, content rich resources and they are useful

for team projects. These sites have also caused some potential harm to society.

The students become victims of social networks more often than anyone else. This

is because when they are studying or searching their course material online, they

get attracted to these sites to kill the boredom n their study time, diverting their

attention from their work and they are more likely to drink and use drug.

Foreign literature

According to Jantima Simpson (2017) Facebook , a social media web 2.0

technology , is a popular social network in ASEAN contries currently playing an

important role by being inyegrating and utilised in education. This study

investigated wheather facebook influenced writing performances of university

students enrolled in an English for business course in Thailand. Data result from

written pretest and protest were analyzed by applying T - test , ANOVA and

scheffe. Result indicated that students with low , medium and high level of writing

performances after interacting via Facebook. However when comparing the three

groups , there is a significant difference in the level of improvement between the

three groups. Base on this particular aspect, it is evident that further research

investigatingthe factor affecting the high, medium and low achievers would be

beneficial as a means of enhancing students writing ability.

According toSara Selvaraj (2013)India is the third biggest country in terms of

internet users in the world, with a high social and mobile audience. Social

networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, etc diverting students from their

studies. Students spend more time on social media than they do do using

personnel email. Even Though, there is loss of privacy and safety, social media

shared interest. Today, the main aim of the student should be education and their

future career. However, many students rely on the accessibility of information on

social media. That means reduced focus on learning and retaining information.

The study also points out the popularity of social networking sites among students

community. The social networking sites and social media have revolutionized the

world, bringing us closer than ever before. However, students can exploit this and

use it for a better life, a better tomorrow.

Local Studies

According to John Vianne Murcia and Acegen de Asis (2015), author of

Influence of Facebook Addiction on Study Habits of College Students, The

purpose of this study was to examine the extent of college students’ addiction in

using Facebook, the extent of their study habits (time management, test-taking,

note-taking, reading, and writing), and if significant relationship exists between the

two. The Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale (BFAS), reflecting the six core

elements of addiction (salience, mood modification, tolerance, withdrawal, conflict,

and relapse) and the Study Habits Questionnaire (SHQ) were administered to 400

students from an institution of higher learning in Padada, Davao del Sur, with a

70.5% response rate (n=252). Pearson Product Moment Correlation coefficient

was used to establish the relationship of the elements of addiction with study

habits, while linear regression analysis was utilized to estimate the degree of

causation of Facebook addiction to study habits. College students have

predominantly low extent of addiction in Facebook. On the other way around, they

are found to exhibit high extent of practicing study habits. Correlation analysis

revealed significant yet negative coefficient values of the six Facebook addiction

elements with overall study habits. Regression estimation revealed that higher

Facebook addiction tendencies of college students decrease the extent of

studying, yet the degree of the relationship (R2 = 0.053) was found to be negligible.

Findings can be utilized by guidance facilitators and educators by integrating it in

classroom instruction. Likewise, further studies with bigger scope/population and

inclusion of demographic variables in estimating Facebook addiction (or generally,

social network or online addiction) are recommended.

According to Gretchen B Chavez and Felix C Chavez Jr. (2017), author

ofRelationship between Facebook Addiction and Loneliness of Filipino High

School Students, This study determined the relationship between Facebook

addiction and loneliness of Filipino High School students. The

descriptive-correlational research design was utilized in this study. The data were

gathered from a total of 112 randomly selected high school students with the use

of survey questionnaires. The mean, frequency and percent, and Pearson product

moment correlation were employed for data analysis. The findings revealed that

majority of the students are non-addicted to Facebook, though there were several
WFDF

students who belong to risky groups and addicted to the social media.

Nevertheless, the overall level of Facebook addiction and loneliness of students

were low. On the other hand, there is a significant and positive relationship

between social media addiction and loneliness of high school students.

Foreign Studies

According to Sedigheh Moghavvemi ; Ainin Binti Sulaiman ; Noor Ismawati

Binti Jaafar ; Nafisa Kasem (2017), author of Facebook and youtube addiction:

The usage pattern of Malaysian students,This paper explores the usage of

Facebook and youtube among Malaysian students and the possibility of Internet

addiction in order to determine the effect of using social media in their social and

academic lives. Data was collected from 667 Facebook users and 1056 youtube

users. Examining Young's [1]Internet addiction scale among the students revealed

that 18% of Facebook users and 22% of youtube users are addicted, and they

spend more than two hours on Facebook and youtube per day. They use

Facebook for information, maintain relationships, academic learning, product

inquiry, and meeting people, while youtube is used for entertainment, information,

academic learning, and product inquiry. These results create awareness for

instructors and academic institution using youtube videos and Facebook as

complementary tools for teaching. They should be aware of the potential for

compulsive and addicted users to be distracted from prescribed videos to

unrelated materials.

According to Owusu-Acheaw, M.; Larson, Agatha Gifty (2015), author of

Use of Social Media and Its Impact on Academic Performance of Tertiary

performance of tertiary institutions students in Ghana with a focus on Koforidua

Polytechnic students. Questionnaire was used for collecting data. Out of one

thousand five hundred and seventy-eight copies of the questionnaire distributed,

one thousand five hundred and eight were retrieved which represented a response

rate of 95.5%. The study revealed that majority of the respondents had mobile

phones which also had Internet facility on them and had knowledge of the

existence of many media sites. The study further confirmed that most of the

respondents visit their social media sites using their phones and spend between

thirty minutes to three hours per day. In addition the study revealed that the use of

social media sites had affected academic performance of the respondents

negatively and that there was direct relationship between the use of social media

sites and academic performance. The study recommends among others that,

students with mobile phones having internet facility should be encouraged to use it

to supplement their research in the library rather than the usual charting with

friends all the time. Students should be encouraged to limit the time they spend on

their social media sites per day and advise them to rather substitute those hours to

read novels to improve their knowledge. Since the use of social media sites had

affected the academic work of students negatively there is the urgent need for the

introduction of students to the availability of novels and other information

resources or materials that can help them academically.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGY

This chapter explained the methodology used in data collection. The

researchers explain the qualitative methodology. More information will be given

on how sampling, interviews and observation were used in collecting data. This

chapter described the research design, area of the study, population and Samples,

instrument for data collection, validation and reliability of research instrument,

administration of instrument, data collection method and data analysis technique.

Research Design

This research work adopted the descriptive survey research design to find

out the impact of mobile phones on student performance in grade 12 senior high

School. According to Glass & Hopkins (1984) descriptive research can be either

quantitative or qualitative. It can involve collections of quantitative information

that can be tabulated along a continuum in numerical form, such as scores on an

examination or the number of times an individual chooses to use a certain feature

of a multimedia program, or it can describe categories of information such as

gender or patterns of interaction when using technology in a group situation.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The following statistical tools were use in the analyzation of data:

1. Frequency and Percentage was used to determine the frequencies of the

students response using the formula:

P = F / N x 100

Where:

P = Percentage of Distribution

F = Number of Frequency of Responses

The students needs to set an alarm or timer for guide to know what timeWFDF
GDFD
GDFD
they needed to stop using facebook. They need to track their time and to

make sure that they will do their academic works.

Teachers need to make a policy where they order their students to set their

phones to airplane mode or turn it off while in class.

School administration should make a policy where the teacher will

confiscate the students phone when they are having a quiz or examination.

They will give it back after the examination. It will be fewer disturbances to

the students who are taking the quiz.

Parents can make some schedule to help their children to be focus on their

studies. They should set time when their child is allowed to use gadget. It

will also be a way to monitor their child studies.

Future Researchers can use this research paper for proper guidance and to

make some enhancement and for further recommendation.

This study recommend to make some application where it tracks the time

spent using facebook and reminded the user. There is also a feature where

the user can set time on when they need to stop using facebook and make

some schedule and be reminded every time. This feature can also shut

down the facebook app when you set your timer.
