reminding us that through communication,

lessened. Padwick designed the sculptures in
PEFC-certified Douglas Fir to convey a warmth
and humanity in contrast to the angular cuboid
shapes and ‘concrete’ blocks which were in reality
made from acrylic stone. As a natural and organic
material that creates a sense of well-being,
timber was the ideal material for this project.

Timber Shortlist 2019

THE World Architecture Festival (WAF) has announced the eleven
shortlisted finalists for the Best Use of Certified Timber Prize.
Supported by PEFC for the second year, 39 architectural practices
from 18 countries have entered their projects for the prize.

Dedicated to celebrating outstanding sustainable architecture across

the globe, WAF presents architecture prizes in a number of categories.
After a successful first year, PEFC and WAF have teamed up again for
the Best Use of Certified Timber Prize to celebrate project teams that
have used certified timber in an innovative, educational or artistic
manner. The quality of the entries demonstrates not only the versatility
of timber as a construction material, but also the international
enthusiasm for its use across a range of sectors. We are delighted that
two UK projects – the Royal Opera House’s ‘Open Up’ (designed by
Stanton Williams) and the Macallan Distillery and Visitor Experience
(designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners) have made the shortlist.
Both design teams will present their projects to an industry expert
WAF jury in Amsterdam on 6 December. The jury will then present the
winner with the prize at a Gala Dinner later that evening. For more

Royal Forestry Society 2019 Awards Meet PEFC UK

THE WINNER of this year’s RFS Excellence
in Forestry Education and Learning was
an outdoor nursery in Bury, West Sussex

developing knowledge about flora, fauna
and trees. They collect their own firewood,
use tools, and process and use green wood
for making their own toys, tools and crafts.
