BandFolio
Band Method
Book 2

To the Director:

Thank you for using the BandFolio Band Method. I hope that it is useful to you, and satisfying to
your students. Please contact me at director@bandfolio.com if you have comments or questions.

The purpose of BandFolio is to provide free resources for music education. We believe that budget,
time, and availability problems can be averted by having immediate access to music resources that can
be downloaded, printed and freely distributed. We also believe that by supplementing the standard
literature and resources available, directors can improve the overall quality of their band programs.

This book is intended to be used as a supplement for second and third year players who are in a
performing ensemble. It is not a continuation of the first book. I suggest using exercises that introduce
or reinforce concepts that are being presented in the ensembles current band literature. There are two
pages of exercises dedicated to each of the first five concert keys that a young group should learn.
There are also several exercises devoted to rhythms that are too difficult for most first year players.

Each book also has a set of major and harmonic minor scales with only the octaves that are practical
for young players.

I would also like you to encourage your students to use the interactive “Skill Builders” section of
BandFolio.com to help them develop or improve their rhythmic accuracy.

Band Method
Book 2

To the student:

Congratulations on completing beginning band! I am sure that you learned a great deal about music and
your instrument. Now it is time to build on that knowledge, and take your musicianship to the next
level. You will have many more performance opportunities, and you will find greater musical
challenges in the year ahead.

The key to continued success in band is practice. Your band director will recommend how much time
you should practice each day. Keep these tips in mind during each practice session:

• Warm up. your band director will recommend a procedure for preparing your body and your
instrument to play.
• Set a goal for each practice session.
• Practice the hard sections first, and break them down into smaller parts. Then put the parts
together.
• Play something fun at the end of each practice session.
• Practice every day.

Continue working with your band director and your classmates, and you will begin to see and hear big
improvements in the quality of your band. Good luck, and have fun!
