Asking Questions

Making Connections
Explanation
-Asking questions before, during, and after
reading helps us understand a text better
-Help us make predictions and set the
purpose
-Enables us to make self-reflections about
the text or ask questions about the author
-Helps us collect our thoughts about what
-Enables us to clarify and critically analyze
the text
-Provide a brief overview of a passage or a
part of a passage, usually one sentence
-When summarizing, state what the
paragraph is about, describe what the
author is doing, and account for key terms
-helps you understand the text on a deeper
level than just surface level
-Text-to-Self: connections that a reader
makes between a piece of reading
materials and the reader’s own
experiences or life.
-Text-to-Text: readers are reminded of
other things they have read, other books
by the same author, stories from a similar
genre, or perhaps on the same topic.
-Text-to-World: larger connections that a
reader brings to a reading situation that
goes beyond your own personal
experiences.
Ask yourself…
Before:
-Is this text fiction or nonfiction?
-What is this article about?
-What clues does the title give me
about the story?
During:
-What is happening in the story?
-What does the main character
want?
-Will he/she get it? If so, how?
After:
-Why did the author end the
paragraph this way?
-What was the author’s purpose
in writing this?
-What is this section about?
-What is the author saying?
-How does this idea connect with
the other idea?

-What does this story remind me
of in my life?
-How is this different from my life?
-What were my feelings when I
read this?
Text-to-Text
-Have I read about something like
this before?
-How is this text similar to other
things I’ve read?
-What does this remind me of in
another book I’ve read?
Text-to-World
-What does this remind me of in
the real world?
-How did that part relate to the
world around me?
-How is this text similar to things
that happened in the real world?

Synthesizing & Making
-What genre is the text?
-when you synthesize you are making -What point of view is the text
an INFERENCE; something that is written?
Inferences implied rather than directly stated -How does the person or
character change?
-to make an inference, take what you
already know + new information (what
the author tells you) = an inference
(draw conclusion, make a prediction,
or generalization)
