This study was conducted by the Grade 10 Junior High School students under their English
adviser, Mr. Marvin Neil B. Medina. Its role is to give information about the effects of social
media to the studies of Grade 10 Junior High School students in Marangal National High School.
The goal of this study is to give background knowledge on what social might do to the grade of
the said students. This study is a big help to identify if social media affects the academic
performance of Grade 10 Junior High School students.
Effects of Social Media to the studies of Junior High School Students
Introduction
Social media is a vital tool for student’s studies and state of mind nowadays. Students use the
social media for communication, studies, socializing and interaction with different types of
people and seem to gradually take most of their attention and time. Some Junior High School
students are responsible enough to moderate their use of social media but some students are not
capable to manage their time between social media and their studies thus taking their studies for
granted.
The objective of our group is to know the problems of Grade 10 Junior high school students
who became addicted to social media that causes them to fail their scores in quizzes, long tests,
examinations and their other activities. The addiction of social media of some students of Grade
10 Junior High school students in Marangal National High School is by too much exposure in
social media sites and online gaming; also by having their time consumed for insignificant social
media stalking, photo uploading and even cyber bullying.
The researchers want to explain to Grade 10 Junior High School students on how social media
might affect their studies. Some students don’t pay attention to their studies and lectures; don’t
have enough time to sleep that causes them to arrive late at school and when they arrive late,
they distract their classmate’s learning and interrupt the instructor’s train of thought all because
of too much exposure to social media even during late at night. This often occur at the beginning
of class, when the instructor is making connection to previous materials and training the day’s
content in terms of key questions or points. When Grade 10 Junior High School students come to
school late they not only miss important training information, but the distraction they create may
cause other students to miss it too. For example, teachers may interpret being late as a form of
disrespect while fellow classmates may become annoyed and lose focus. By informing or
reminding Grade 10 Junior High School students how their behavior affect others can sometimes
be enough to correct the behavior.

Chapter Two
Local Literature
TABUK CITY, Kalinga – People all over the world have been enjoying the benefits of using technology
nowadays. In the past, communicating and free sharing of thought between people are restricted by long
distance, race, and even religion. But now these barriers can no longer stop the flow of information and
knowledge because now the new world of social networking allows free sharing of thoughts through
online social networking sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and the like.
Since students are highly motivated to using social media sites the majority of them use these to satisfy
their social needs more than their academic needs. They have the freedom to do whatever they want –
they can upload or download data, they can make new friends and comment on other people’s lives, and
they can even create other online identities the real world does not allow. It has been observed too that
the majority of the students nowadays, particularly those in the secondary level, spend most of their time
chatting with their acquaintances, playing online games, and watching videos instead of reading their
lessons, making their assignments, and other academic requirements. The main reason is when they work
or search their materials online they get attracted to social networking sites to kill boredom during study
time, diverting their attention from their work. The darker side of this that has gained the attention of
many parents is that some students are getting lazier and are no longer interested in going to school. This
is probably due to being extensively indulged to get global access and therefore leading them to perform
less academically.
I have observed from my Grades 7 and 8 students at the Tabuk City National High School the same
positive and negative impact of using social media inside and outside the classroom. I found these social
sites helpful when one time I needed to communicate with my students, reminding them of their
assignments and urgent requirements. In addition, l also used these social sites to refer my students to
helpful resources that could fetch them higher grades in academics. I tried to encourage the students,
particularly the teens with gadgets having internet facilities, to use it to supplement their researches in the
library rather than the usual chatting with friends all the time.
As a result, almost 85 percent of them were able cope with their academic difficulties and at least 65 to 75
percent of the class obtained the average level of performance. However, students should be encouraged
to limit the time they spend on social media sites and be advised to rather substitute those hours with
reading some learning materials – short stories, novels, etc. to improve their vocabulary. Since the use of
social media sites had affected the academic performance of students negatively, there is a need to
introduce the students other information resources or materials that would motivate and help them
perform well in their academics.
We can’t deny the fact as years pass by the demand for internet usage keeps increasing because it is
already a necessity among end users, particularly to students. Developers have created online social
media sites where people can have more advanced, more reliable, and more creative ways of
communicating. This shows we, humans, are social animals. We always want to belong in a group where
we also prefer what the group does.
According to a survey conducted by Pew Research Center, as of 2015 the largest social networking
company, Facebook for example, has 1.49 billion active users and the number of users is increasing every
year. As part of the said survey, 72 percent of high school students and 78 percent college students spend
time on these social networking sites – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube, Viber, E-mail, etc. These
numbers evidently indicate how much the student community is involved in this virtual world of
networking. Students prefer social media sites as reliable sources of information because everything is a
package. A research conducted by Gagne sometime in 2003 defined media in general as some kind of
components in a students’ environment that can stimulate them to study better. Researchers also found
that the use of some types of social media has beneficial effects to students, not only on their academic
needs but also to help them establish a sense of identity and build and enhance networking skill
Chapter Three
Methodology
The researchers used a questionnaire to gather their needed data. This research was conducted
on March 14, 2018, during the break time of the respondents.
Chapter Four
Based on the gathered results from the questionnaires , the researchers conclude that social
media consume at least 70% to 80% of students’ free time given that they have a smartphone,
tablet, laptop or computer they can use and internet connection.
Although being exposed with the internet gives access to vast information and knowledge,
without proper use and intentions, this can greatly affect the students’ state of mind. Because of
having social media consume most of their free time, students, most of the time take their studies
for granted. Not only they have tendency to neglect their studies, some even lost a healthy live
interaction with people being too engrossed in the cyberworld and some even experience cyber
bullying that not only can affect their studies but also how they look on their self and how others
perceive them whether the facts found on social media were true or not.
Chapter Five
Summary
Conclusion
We conducted a research on effects of social media in the class of Junior High School students
of Marangal National High School. In this research, we found out that using social media affects
the performance of some students at school.
For the social media users, over using social media affects their performance in class. This can
also lead to conclusion that some students need to set their priority and schedule of activities
straight and learn to focus on more relevant matters and actual social interaction rather than
indulging themselves too much on the so called cyberworld and social media sites.
