DETAILED LESSON PLAN

OCTOBER 15, 2018 Learning Area: SCIENCE 9 Grade Level:9 Quarter: 2 Duration:60

Learning Code:
Competency/ies: recognize the general classes and uses of organic compounds; S9MT-IIh-
18

Key Alcohols are another group of organic compounds.

Concepts/Understandings
to be Developed: These organic compounds also have very important uses.
Some alcohols are used as antiseptic or disinfectant, some are used as cleaning agents, others
are used as components of liquors and a few alcohols are used as fuel for portable stoves or
other types of burners.

1. Objectives
Knowledge
Recognize the uses of common alcohols
Skills
Identify the similarities in the different structures of alcohols
Attitudes
Relate the structures of the alcohols to the properties they have.
Values
Cooperation and Participation in discussion and group activities.
2. Content/Topic
Alcohols and Their Uses

3.Learning A. References:

4. Procedures

4.1 Introductory Activity Attendance and Physical arrangement check

 Eliciting students’ prior knowledge about Organic Compounds and Hydrocarbons
 Provide each group of students with LABELS or PICTURES of the following
products: one antiseptic or disinfectant that contains ethyl alcohol, one antiseptic
that contain isopropyl alcohol, one beverage that contain ethyl alcohol, and one
denatured alcohol.
 Let the groups of students read the information written on the labels and tell
them to fill out the table of data with information from the labels. After this,
give them the instructions to answer all the questions in the activity.
3. After the activity, select students from a group to present their answers in front
of
the class. This may be done to begin your discussions about the uses of the
alcohols and the relationship between their structures and properties.
4. Use the following concepts to explain the relationship between the structures
and
the properties of the different alcohols.
DETAILED LESSON PLAN

4.2 Activity They will have a group activity. Group the students into 5 .
Let them do the activity: Alcohols and Their Uses
Refer to Science 8 LM. (pp. 52-53)
Procedure:
1) With your group, read the labels of the products that contain alcohols.
2) Write in the table below, the names of the products and the alcohol compounds
that are found in the labels of the product and their uses.

4.3 Analysis Processing of student’s responses. Ask the following questions:

Q1. What are the common products that contain alcohol?
Q2. Why are these alcohols important?
3) With your group, use the following illustrations of the structures of common alcohols
to answer the following questions.

Q3. What types of bonds are present in ethyl alcohol, methyl alcohol, and in isopropyl
alcohol?
Q4. What accounts for the similar physical properties of alcohols?

4.4 Abstraction
What are alcohols?
Give the different types of alcohols.
Discuss the uses of alcohols.
4.5 Application
How do we use alcohol in real life situations?

5. Assessment
