Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

In order to be the best student you must be disciplined, responsible, and most of all hard

working. To have these qualities is really something a student needs to flourish, because

someday these qualities will give them success in each students’ chosen field. To be successful is

to accomplish your goals that you have determined to have over the years.

Having the best student in class makes a good role model for other students as it proves

to the rest that it can be done and that one of their own can perform the task, routine, or objective

without the need of supervision (Linsin, 2015). Best student is sent to various competitions as

representative bringing the name of their respective schools, which makes the best student more

competitive. Students study for the probability of success to increase as students may have think

that success is determined by grades (Sutherland, 2017).

Also, according to Ulla Lundqvist (2017) in a classroom setup, student’s correct answers

to teacher’s question is considered as distinctive sign of a well-behaved and compliant student.

Such behavioural signs contributes to identification of a best student. Also, teachers tend to see

the actions of some children as a sign of being best student while other students are rarely

identified, though eventually their actions could lead to such identification.

According to Luke Towler (2014), to be more intelligent, students tend to memorize

information rather than enhancing their critical thinking and problem-solving skills. That is

today's grading system which is based on the handwork for scores and not by intellect. This may

lead to the best students prioritizing school grades. Best students spend most of their time

studying and memorizing for them to get higher grades in school. According from J Health Soc

Behav (2011) research article, this process of studying is shunting doors to the public and social

interaction affecting mental health, health behavior, physical health, and mortality risk resulting

in an emotional state known as depression.

The aim of this study is to determine the effects of being the best student in class. This

assesses the four (4) fundamental health status of the best students which includes student’s

mental, social, physical and emotional health status.
