Verification of Ohm’s Law and Resistance Measurement

using Color Codes

OBJECTIVES:

1. To measure the resistance using resistor color codes

2. To perform an experimental check of Ohm’s law
3. To practice constructing electric circuits
4. To practice using digital multi-meter

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:

 DEV-2765
 DMM
 Probes
 Resistors
 Connecting wires

Procedure:

1. First, I calculated resistance of different resistors by procedure give below.

i. Place the resistor such a way that the gold or silver stripes() is at the right end of
resistor.
ii. From first two stripes, I determined the first two digits of the resistor value using
table given below.
iii. I found the value of Third stripe from left i.e. multiplicative value.
iv. By multiplying the first two digits with the muliplicative value, I obtained the
value of resistor in ohms.
v. Fourth stripe indicates the accuracy of the resistor.
2. After finding the value of different resistors, I set up the circuit as shown.
3. After verifying that circuit is properly patched on the breadboard, switch on the trainer.
4. I did adjustments for DC voltage measurements using DMM.
5. After switching on the DMM, I measured the voltage across the resistor by connecting it
in parallel to the resistor.
6. I note down the value of the voltage.
7. Now I turned the power of the trainer and DMM off.
8. Break-open the circuit for current measurement and put the DMM in series with the
resistor as current is always measured by placing DMM in series with the component.
9. Do the adjustments of DMM required for DC current measurement.
10. When you are sure that all the connection have been made properly, turn on the trainer
and the DMM.
11. Note down the amount of current flow through the resistor.
12. Repeat step 2 to 11 with different resistors to take more readings.

Table
No. of Resistance, R Voltage, V Current, I Calculated Current %
Observations (Ohms) (Volts) (Amperes) I=V/R difference
1 2600 5 1.83 1.9 7
2 6700 5 0.74 0.75 1
3 3300 5 1.53 1.52 1
4 1000 5 5.07 4.99 8

ANALYSIS:
2.3 kΩ ± 20% TOL=Red, Orange, Red, None

85 MΩ ± 10% TOL=Gray, Green, Blue, Silver

Red, Black, Black, Silver=20 Ω

Green, Grey, Blue, Gold=58 MΩ

When the resistance in the circuit went up, the current in the circuit decreases.
