Lesson 1:

1. As a millennial, you have come to know the world as fast-paced, technological and innovative.
However, you must also know that the world is entirely different in the past. How do you picture the
world from thirty years ago? In you perspective, how would you assess the quality of life back then?

During the 90's, people are still within the process of entering a transition stage towards 21st century.
This age brought out and give rise to new knowledge and innovations that eases and beefed up the
works of the people. This is when people began to use slightly modernized technological tools such as
computers, phones, social media and robots among others. Through this modernization, people have
experienced development in many aspects as a product of these modernized tools. Innovations and
development in science, technology, engineering and arts also began. Not only on the material things
that people have developed but also on non material things. Equality started to be given justice through
different social and human rights movements that led the people to a more balanced and gender-
sensitive world. Women were give the rights equated to men. Battling mations began to reconcile and
fixed the feud and dilemma between them. Treaties and agreements regarding territories and rights
have been inked. In the span of this transition age, people have build the foundation of the
development of what people have and are experiencing today.

2. Ask your perent to name technological, communicative or electronic materials or gadgets that used to
exist during their younger years. On your own, try to research on information about the gadgets your
parents mentioned. Try to determine the function and usefulness in everyday life. After that, do think of
present day gadgets or devices comparable to your old gadgets.

3. In what instances can innovation be disruptive?

As people used to say, "There's always two sides of the coin", innovations have their own benefits that
are very useful to the people in their day-to-day basis of living. On the other hand, this innovations
(revolutionary innovations) can bring harm and risk to the people. Innovations are undoubtedly
important and useful. They make every works easier, faster and with minimum energy and time needed.
Furthermore, this innovations helped the people to deal with everyday problems and challenges that
need to be addressed. But if these innovations are mishandled and improperly used and imposed, these
will cause high risks not only to the people but will also include the environment where people live.
Moreover, if any innovations fail to follow appropriate procedures during its implementation, these will
be dangerous, the effects will be gruesome and these innovations will spark the rise of more complex
problems.

Lesson 2:
1. You have learned in this lesson that technology plays a signicant role in diffusion. At your age, you are
exposed to many outcome brought about by diffusion of culture and practices around the world. Can
you identify some issues of diffusion around you?

People nowadays are interested in exploring new knowledge and belief. They seek to understand many
things. One of the issues of diffusion in our place is the usage and learning of new language. People are
hooked on differents k-pop groups to the extent of knowing even how to speak korean language.
Because of the vast information found on the internet such as facebook, youtube and google, people can
do this as in a limited time. Also, one of the issues of diffusion that is very evident to the people through
the passing of time is how people dress themselves. This process known as diffusion is also evident to
the ethnic groups. Since they have already built a good communication and is often being invaded by
the "outside world", they began to adopt the culture and way of living of other people stained with
civilization. Another example of diffusion in our place is the attitude of the people on how they act and
behave. Filipinos are gradually forgetting the essence of being a Filipino. When you are a woman, you
need to possess or portray a modest attitude and behavior of a woman. Filipinas are now wearing shirts
and other clothes that are originally conceptualized and made from other countries based on their own
culture and history. This is due to modernization, globalization, international trade and excessive time
alloted in the internet.

2. Look at your social media account. Scan through your home feed and identify some information (
activities, videos, posts, etc. ) that may have originated from another country or culture but is also
initiated locally. Try to look into and analyze that certain social media material through incorporating in
your analysis the agents of diffusion. Do this in at least two of your social media accounts.

3. Can diffusion lead to negative consequences?

People can say diffusion is positive and diffusion is negative based on which angle or aspect they are
looking at. One of the issues why diffusion can lead into negative consequences is the lack of
preservation of individual and group identity, culture and history. People are continuously adopting new
knowledge, activities, beliefs and customs whithout full awareness that the culture they have are
gradually being forgotten. Filipinos are known for their many characteristics, beliefs, values and
traditions that distinguish and make them unique and different from other nationalities. But with this
diffusion Filipinos are experiencing and embracing, our identity is not far from extinction. While on the
other side diffusion can also be beneficial to the people. Through diffusion, people are able to explore
knowledge, culture, beliefs and activities that will help them to communicate, unite and work along
diverse individuals properly and productively. Moreover, if people lock themselves within their own
culture and belief there would be no unity, progress, and sharing of new knowledge and technology.

Reflective essay
As members of the society, we are obliged to take part into everything the society has given us. That is
one rule every member should follow. Because societies are prone to changes and diffusion, we are also
exposed to changes and diffusion. I have seen and witnessed the transition of different aspects in the
community. The beliefs, language, habits, preference, actions and attitudes we have before are no
longer instilled in us the same as it is before. People nowadays tend to comply to what the internet is
demanding, what is trend and what is in the spotlight. For instance, when I once went to a restaurant I
observed that many people , without exception to myself, prefer buying foods that are unusual or
extraordinary cuisines usually originating from other countries. These oftenly ordered foods are
shanghai which is based on Chinese cuisine and siomai which is a Japanese delicacy. Many recipes from
other countries have been highly patronized in the Philippines and more delicacies are on their way. And
when it comes clothes and accessories, people prefer to use what is in trend. They first consult the
internet on what is the most prevalent outfit which are usually dresses that are revealing a large portion
of the body. This is opposite to what Filipinas should be wearing. As the passing of time, Filipinas are
gradually adopting the way Americans and Europeans dress themselves. Furthermore, our OPM songs
and original dances are already inspired and based on other countries such as the United States
America, Korea, Japan and other Asian countries. These are just a portion of diffusion in the Philippines.
And we cannot deny that our country is prone to diffusion because Philippines are home not only to
native Filipinos but also to other nationalities. During the time of World War 1 and World War 2,
Philippines has been a perfect spot for other clashing countries to guard their territories. Various nations
have fought hard to win and take over our land. And during this time when Filipinos are colonized be the
Spaniards, Japanese, and Americans. Long before this period, Philippines has been invaded by Chinese,
Malays, and travelers and merchants from other countries. In the present day, more changes are
occuring and numerous innovations and development are expected to be established. People are
benefited by things other people from other culture and societies have shared. I, myself, have also been
enjoying these benefits brought about by modernization, globalization, technology and language.
Through diffusion, I was able to explore diverse groups of people and understand their way of living. I
was able to learn how changes evolved and how these changes solve different challenges in the
community. And how I became knowledgeable on the individual and group development and progress
diffusion has given us. We have a lot of difference but through diffusion and sharing of knowledge,
people can build a strong connection, better interaction and incomparable unity.
