If all goes well this is my last semester at CSN. I have transferred my credits to UNLV
for the spring term but to fully be accepted there I need to pass the Praxis Core Exam. From there
I want to finish my bachelor's degree then take on teaching full time. The Praxis is split up into
three sections, Math, Reading, and Writing with different passing scores for each. Math requires
a score of 150, with 1 hour and 25 minutes to test. Reading requires a score of 156 with 1 hour
and 25 minutes. Lastly, writing requires a score of 162 with 1 hour and 40 minutes to finish.
I first read about the Praxis exam in my EDU 214 class at CSN. We were required to look
over a practice exam but not required to take it. After looking at the coverage of the exam, I was
overwhelmed and scared that I would fail it. I enrolled in an Algebra refresher class in hopes it
would build my math skills, but that has now been a few semesters back. I spend most of my
time studying in the math section, using the Khan Academy Math and Cognella, which is a math
site that I used for math 120. I get very intimidated when it comes to the math section so I
thought focusing on that section would benefit me the most. I spent very little time studying for
Reading and Writing because I thought they would be much easier. My studying for reading and
writing was on the Khan Academy site but I spent about 4 hours combined the past two weeks on
those subjects.
My lowest score out of the three tests was the Reading part. I got a score of 46%, this
means I need significant improvement. My second test was Writing, I received a score of 68%,
which means I need improvement in that area as well. Lastly was Math, I scored 72% which is
on the borderline of passing. From my scores on all three exams, I am not going to pass any
exam. I need a lot of study time in all areas to prepare myself for the Praxis Core. These scores
were very disappointing. I got the highest score where I spent most of my time studying (in
Math). I underestimated reading and writing because I was so nervous about the math portion. I
plan to fluctuate my study time between the subjects equally instead of focusing on one subject.
For math, I will continue to use the Cognella site. This site lets me move at my own pace and it
is a site I can easily navigate through because I am very familiar with it. I have decided that it is
best to enroll in a praxis class at CSN before taking the exam. This way I feel better prepared to
go in but I still plan on using the free praxis sites to study before the exam as well. I am far off
from being ready for this exam, so I need to use all the resources I can.
