ARCHITECTURE:
What Lies Beneath Us

While skyscrapers can be absolutely breath-taking, it is wrong to reject the idea that
sometimes it’s those buildings that lie underground that are the most interesting. The con-
cept of Underground Architecture is not completely unfamiliar to human beings at all. Men
already have a long history with the exploitation of underground spaces (AlKhayat, 2014).
With more advance technology, the major emphasis of interest in the sub surface has now
drastically evolved into an exhibition of marvellous creativity. This talk will primarily discuss
three main parts. The first part will be a documentation of the rich history of underground
space utilization. The second part will identify some key problems inherent in designing un-
derground buildings (Carmody et al, 1987); and for the last part, we shall take a look at the
use of underground spaces and natural topography as parts of modern forms and functions
with the intention of summarizing the current state of the entire practice (Labs, 1976).
