4 Tech Tool Eval 1

The tech tool I chose to evaluate was an application called Stop Motion Studio Video which I found off of
Richard Byrne’s blog – Practial Ed Tech (Byrne, 2019). This app is free to use and incredibly user friendly.
All you need to do is download the Stop Motion google plugin and then you’re set to start recording.
The app syncs to your webcam and allows you to record any length of video you like. It has a button on
it that allows you to “screen capture” at any point thus turning any video clip, or motion, into a stop
motion movie.

The two main EdTech models I have been exposed to are the TPACK framework and the SAMR model.
The TPACK framework is a guide and structure for how technology, pedagogy, and content knowledge
mesh into cultivating the best classroom environment possible (Kurt, 2019). As we know, hands-on,
visual, student directed activities yield some of the best learning experiences for students. Combining
that pedagogy with the content of, let’s say, meiosis, mitosis, linear motion, acceleration due to gravity,
etc. can work to provide an incredible learning experience. Stop Motion Studio can do just this. The
simple stop motion video of tossing a dodge ball in the air that I made is a perfect example of this. By
allowing students to collect their own data, analyze height vs. time will allow them to have an authentic
learning experience that would otherwise not be possible without this technology. This fits in perfectly
with the SAMR model, which highlights that the most effective integration of technology in the
classroom should be more than just a substitute. Ideally it will modify or redefine tasks previously
inconceivable (Walsh, 2016). This technology modifies, if not redefines, an activity that would otherwise
not be conceivable in one class period.

I selected this tool because I was able to see the immediate benefits it could provide to my classroom…
like tomorrow! Also because of the many various units and lessons it can be implemented in, such as
meiosis, mitosis, EVERY physics lesson (nearly), convection currents in earth science, plate tectonics, etc.
I would also recommend this technology to any humanities teachers who are looking for a way for
students to creatively tell a story. I would recommend this to any geography or math teachers as well as
with a touch of creativity this could be used to enhance any classroom.

The Stop Motion Studio application elicits creativity, collaboration, authentic data collection, invention,
digital literacy, and a relevant learning experience in the 21st century.
