A. Reading: read the conversation!


Accident

Jane got an accident when she rode her motorcycle. Some people helped her and brought her
to the nearest hospital. Now she is in the hospital. The doctor helped by a nurse is treating
Jane. Finally, Jane’s family comes and wants to visit Jane.

Jane’s mother : Doctor we are Jane’s parent. How is her condition?

Doctor : We are taking care of your daughter and she is now getting better.

Jane’s mother : She doesn’t have any serious injure?

Doctor : Lucky her that she doesn’t have any serious injure. She actually was terribly
bleeding, but we had given her transfusion. And the wound was taken care. She was shock
that’s make her lost her conscious.

Jane’s mother : I can’t imagine she was bleeding, is she ok doctor?

Doctor : Don’t worry. We have given our best treatment. Though right now she has
not been conscious, her condition develops.

Jane’s mother : Thanks a lot, doctor. Can we meet our daughter?

Doctor : Sure. You can be with her but to communicate with her you have to wait until
she is conscious. And remember, she needs to take a rest; her condition is not stable yet.
Don’t push her to think.

Jane’s mother : I see. Thank you Doctor.

Doctor : if you have any need, just let the nurses know.

Jane’s mother : Ok , thank you.

SIMPLE PAST TENSE


Tenses ini digunakan untuk menyatakan kejadian-kejadian di masa lampau. Biasanya diikuti
signal time: yesterday, this morning, last, ago, formerly…
Formula : S + V2

Yang perlu diperhatikan dalam menyusun kalimat dalam bentuk past tense adalah perubahan
kata kerjanya. Bahasa Inggris memiliki 2 macam kata kerja bentuk past yaitu: REGULAR
dan IRREGULAR VERB.
Regular verb adalah verb yang perubahannya beraturan, yaitu : V1 + d/ed.
Sedangkan Irregular verb adalah verb yang perubahannya tidak beraturan. Perhatikan
contoh di bawah ini:

Untuk menyusun kalimat negatif dan kalimat tanya past tense pada kalimat verbal, kata kerja
bantu yang digunakan adalah did. Auxilliary did digunakan pada semua subjek (I, you, we,
they, he, she, it, subjek jamak maupun tunggal).
Contoh:

Untuk menyusun kalimat nominal, yang digunakan adalah to be bentuk past:

Untuk membuat kalimat negatif to be + not. Sedangkan untuk menyusun kalimat tanya, to be
letakkan di depan:

(-) She isn’t fine (-)She was not very well yesterday.
(?) Is she fine? (?) Was she well yesterday?

(+)They are usually at the laboratory. (+)We were at library this morning.

(?) Are They usually at the laboratory? (?)Were we at library this morning?
Dalam menyampaikan pesan present tense dan past tense sangat umum digunakan bersama.
Gunakan present tense untuk menggambarkan kegiatan maupun fakta yang masih berlaku
saat ini (present fact and activities). Contoh:

 I am from Jogjakarta
 My father is a teacher.
Gunakanlah past tense untuk menceritakan kejadian ataupun fakta di masa lampau. Contoh:

 I was born in Solo.


 I went to high school in Solo and graduated last year.
Contoh penggunaan present tense dan past tense dalam satu kalimat:

 I studied English for three years and now I am good at English.


 She was born in Jogjakarta twenty years ago, but now she lives in Solo.
Exercise:
